Seth Jones would be incredibly interesting. I still think he can be a legitimately good Dman, just not a #1 guy that is relied upon to play that role. In Denver, he'd arguably be the #3, and obviously for sure the #2 RD behind Cale. I think in that role he would prove to be really, really good for us.

But like.... How in the world do you make that cap work. I'd say Chicago realistically needs to retain ~25% just to get Jones out of negative value territory and into neutral territory.


Either the Avs know the cap is going way up, or they really are considering parting ways with Mikko.

*If of course it is Seth Jones that we're looking at with Chicago. Could just as easily be a much smaller deal still. Though I do think there's clearly some smoke here at this point.
 
My thoughts on Chicago scouting the last 6 Avs games + 2 Eagles games(both when Ivan was sent down, let's see if they scout them again now that he's been sent back down)...

Let's use our brains for a bit.

- Chicago are sellers.
- Colorado are buyers.
- Chicago are the ones consistently scouting the Avs and the Eagles.
- Colorado cannot take on excessive cap in any trade.

So, with those facts, we can conclude:

- Chicago are discussing receiving a roster player or two from the Avs, not just a futures based deal.
- Colorado wouldn't be giving up a significant roster piece for a Donato type player, unless it's a package like Donato + Murphy.

Some players I think may interest the Avs from Chicago: Donato, Murphy, Hall, Dickinson, Jones.

You might be right that it's not for a Jones deal, but would their GM travel away from the team to scout two games in a row for Ivan Ivan?

What I'm hearing

—Chicago general manager Kyle Davidson has been present in the press box at the last two Avalanche games. He spent a lot of time chatting with Chris MacFarland during the first intermission Wednesday night. The Blackhawks have also been scouting the Colorado Eagles extensively of late.

None of this means guarantees a deal, but you can be sure the teams have spoken. Keep in mind that Buffalo's assistant general manager was in Denver for a few games before the Casey Mittelstadt-Bo Byram deal went down.

Sources told The Denver Gazette the Avalanche have checked in on Seth Jones, but they're not the only team that has done so. There's no way the Avalanche could take on his full contract, so there would have to be some maneuvering and retention done for something to get finalized there. Either way, a general manager doesn't typically spend that much time looking at a team if it's a standard trade for a rental.

Trading for Jones this year and using LTIR to make the cap work, then unloading Manson and one of Colton/Mitts in the summer to make the cap work in future years would be extremely interesting.

I could really see this being what they're considering. With Ritchie coming next year as well. And quite frankly with a good playoffs for Manson/Ross they could probably fetch decent value back in both guys as a way to restock the draft pick situation.

I just dont really even know what a fair value Seth Jones deal would look like... At full cap hit he's a negative value asset for sure right? So at what point in retention does he reach neutral value, and then at what point does he start to cost decent assets. And how does his full NMC potentially fit into the equation.

Like would Ivan + 2026 1st be close enough in value to get Jones at $7M?

My guess would be the most likely reason MacFarland and Davidson would talk in person, would be to discuss salary retention, and/or perhaps how to work together with a 3rd team being involved.

Jones may not have a ton of value, but I'm not seeing how they'd be so interested in the Avs/Eagles young players or prospects, that Davidson had to see them in person.

Feels like more to it, but who knows.
 
Darren Dreger was on TSN 1050 Radio this morning on First Up with Korolnek and Colaiacovo.

Mentioned the Avs when talking trades. I only caught a bit of it as I was in commute to work, but I got a chance to play it back now.

"And then there's Colorado, where everybody knows Chris MacFarland is involved on several fronts. The feeling is the Avalanche want to get a deal done before the Four Nations freeze, this isn't a team that wants to wait for prices to go up at the trade deadline. MacFarland has been aggressive this year making several in-season trades. We all know Colorado want a defenseman and have been working hard on that front. How much the Rantanen extension talks are occupying MacFarland and taking him away from finding that trade is unknown. The sentiment around the league had been the Avs were looking for somebody to shore up the bottom part of the defense, but the impression is now they might be more big game hunting. Moving significant salary in will be a challenge."

It's gotta be Jones, but he might not be the only piece, or there could be an additional, separate smaller trade like Ivan for Donato in the works as well

It's just not a trade deadline if someone hasn't said the Avs are big game hunting.

It certainly would be interesting to see how it shakes out if Jones is involved.

Normally it's not so hard to guess the framework of a deal, but with the cap space problem and Jones' contract, it's not a surprise this might take multiple in-person meetings.

Mitts is an obvious candidate, but then the question becomes who is the new 2C? How much do the Hawks retain? What other pieces are involved? I don't see anyone on Chicago that could fill that role for us, and I can't think of any obvious targets on other teams (Granlund perhaps?) but that takes a lot of confidence in getting a secondary deal done.

Somehow this also makes me think of Landeskog - is he close to returning and the Avs preparing for a blockbuster to make it happen? If that's the case other guys names that pop up would be Nichuskin or even Rantanen. Again, hard to see how we win such a deal but the Hawks have plenty of nice young defensemen and it removes the Nichuskin distraction.

Realistically, it's probably something involving Murphy but with all the smoke around Jones it's hard not to wonder. I think Kurashev is probably someone the Avs would be looking at too in and Ivan swap. Basically the Hawks get a more defensive/all-around guy and the Avs get a more skilled player who has struggled this season.
 
Low key wonder if Miles Wood could be a guy headed to Chicago in a Jones trade.

The Avs could really use Wood right now, but long-term shedding his $2.5Mx4 would take the sting off Jones' awful contract.

Doubtful after he just literally today said he will have back problems for the rest of his career lol.

Jones @ 6.5, sure would be worth it as a Manson replacement. But I'm not sure how you get to that level of retention. Of course, you could move Manson and Wood or something like that back, but the math doesn't really work like that since you have to replace them. Otherwise, I just don't see it.

A 6.5M on a second pairing dman? People complain that Manson and G have expensive contracts. $11.5M on Girard + Jones sounds like a lot to me.
