I know his contract is obviously insane but the Avs have been in on Seth Jones before. If there’s any type of retention + return money possibility you bet your ass they’re checking in on it.

Jones hasn't really been good for a while, and I don't think it's just because he's on a bad team. I can't really come up with a deal there that works.

They could probably make it work if the cap increases as expected, but Chicago would have to retain around $2mil and take Wood back. The rest is what to do with Manson's last year versus Drouin and Rantanen's plans. Also if Landy comes back.

Lots of moving parts, but it is doable imo. Jones would crush it behind Makar, I have no doubt there.

I think Avs would seek to keep the team together this year and move Manson/RossCo in the offseason pending the Rantanen negotiation and Landy return. Stack the deck as much as possible, leverage LTIR to your advantage.

If you're going to keep Rantanen for the run, might as well go all out. Otherwise why bother keeping him.

I think the entire general population knows Bednar's system. Play top line 25-30 mins / game, pray they score a couple goals and hope the rest of the team don't screw up too much.

Further to that, there were rumours last off-season that Chicago wanted a top 6 forward with Nichushkin mentioned. LeBrun shot it down saying that it was too risky for Chicago, but I wonder if they still feel that way 6 months later. There's obviously still risk but maybe they think it's worthwhile, especially if it helps them move Jones' contract too.

Blackhawks Trade Rumors: Saying No to Nichushkin​

Another day, another article on Chicago Blackhawks trade rumors roundup which continue to have an ember here or there. This one includes a new name and looks at some of the old.

SN’s Pierre LeBrun reports that Martin Necas is very much on the radar for the Blackhawks and that building around Connor Bedard will be the main focus in the offseason. But the curious one comes from Colorado, where a prominent name rose up and was batted down just as quickly by LeBrun.

Blackhawks Trade Rumors Involve Valeri Nichushkin As Well​

The 29-year-old forward still has six years left on his deal, and is currently in the league’s player assistance program. Understandably, LeBrun reported that the Blackhawks, if indeed interested, looked at what transpired and left it alone. Nichushkin is suspended until at least the middle of November, which from the hockey side of things, doesn’t help the roster they’re trying to fix. The other part of it, of course, is the human element with him working things out in the assistance program.



While he’s playing in a Russian league per Evan Rawal of Colorado Hockey Now, there seems to be just too much there for the Blackhawks to take on as they try to escape a rebuild. Rawal hints, however, that there’s a possibility Nichushkin doesn’t suit up for the Avalanche again. That is another bit that shows why the Blackhawks would pass on a deal.

Which makes sense. After all, the organization had its embarrassment with the Corey Perry incident, which mushroomed into speculative and false rumors along with Perry eventually being released. Davidson and the front office will not only do their due diligence, but distance themselves from anything that could potentially morph into an issue.

But the other part is the term of the deal extends for another six seasons.

The Chicago Blackhawks appear to be a team to watch this summer as the team looks to take a step forward and build around Connor Bedard in his second season.

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun writes in The Athletic(opens in a new tab) that the Blackhawks are looking to add a top-six forward and perhaps a middle-six forward as well this off-season.

LeBrun believes Chicago could be a landing spot for Carolina Hurricanes pending restricted free agent Martin Necas, who appears to be available on the trade market. He also shut down a report that the Blackhawks were considering making a major trade with the Colorado Avalanche.

"There was a rumour floating around that the Hawks were considering taking a look at suspended star forward Valeri Nichushkin from the Colorado Avalanche, but I’m told they’re not interested," LeBrun wrote. "Just too much unknown and risk for their liking."

Nichushkin received a suspension of at least six months without pay on May 13 and was placed in Stage 3 of the league's player assistance program. Signed through the 2029-30 season at a cap hit of $6.125 million, the 28-year-old winger scored 28 goals and 53 points in 54 games during the regular season and led the Avalanche with nine goals in eight playoff games before the suspension.

I'm not sure how much there is to gain scouting Nuke skating for 10 minutes in practice. Seems like they would be better off scouting a week later when he gets back.

If there's something to what I suggested above with Nichushkin then it would probably make sense to include Donato as well, as he could slot in at 3C and bump Colton to Nichushkin's spot on the wing:

Then if/when Landeskog returns he'd bump Colton down again.

Nichushkin ($6.125m) for Jones ($9.5m + Donato ($2m) would have a difference of $5.375m in cap though, so you'd almost certainly have to include Manson as well and/or get significant retention from Chicago to make it work.

He's a known commodity, so could be that they're looking at which "lesser" pieces to ask for in a trade.

It could also be a case of the Chicago GM wanting to meet Nichushkin in person before a trade. Not sure how the optics of that would go down though.

I get the risks with Nuke, but the guy is so much better than Jones at this point, so taking on Jones’ massive contract to move Nuke seems ass backwards

Some cap relief and an immediate second line. The window is now I personally don’t give af about getting older right now. We have like a 2-4 year window that’s it. all in for cups or bust. Avs have wasted every year besides last year since 22.
