What's PG's deal? Being a fan in the Eastern Conference, I just don't really see them that often or follow them besides box scores. They didn't seem to lose too, too much of value from last year (besides Funk) and while they are still doing well enough, they don't seem to be nearly as dominating a presence as they were last year.
Were they just unsustainably riding an entire team of career highs last year and it was only down from there or were they just never as good as thought entering this season? Again, it's not like they're bad, I guess I just assumed they would be a distant second or even first place in the West.
Lost Funk (67 goals), Thornton (Captain, 74 pts), Becher (96 pts), Young (.915 Sv% in AHL this year), Pauls (Shutdown D), & Dezainde (25 goals).
Even with all those players leaving I think the roster talent wise is just as good if not better than last year. Main issue in my opinion is the leadership group is way different this year and that is why they are losing.
You hear things in PG about Heidt & Ziemmer being at the casino drinking and gambling after almost every home game. Talking about where they are going to fish this summer etc. When things don’t go right for this Cougars team they throw temper tantrums, this was most noticeable in the 0-5 loss to the oil kings in Edmonton and 3-6 loss to the rockets in Kelowna (the day that Kelowna fired their head coach). I would be shocked if the cougars don’t lead the league in suspensions this year.
It just seems like the leaders of the team aren’t leading by example. The team doesn’t have the depth scoring it had last year and the stars haven’t been good enough. Guys like Parascak and Heidt haven’t taken the step forward that they were expected to. Ziemmer especially has been a disappointment, he should be dominating like Cristall this year, no excuses.
Defensively they have been garbage despite having a projected 1st round starting goaltender and a solid defensive core, this due to a lack of effort from the top guys. There is no way this team should be outshot and beat by any teams in the west other than Spokane and Everett, but it happens again and again.
Of course they could still turn it all around and win the cup this year, they have the talent. But at this rate I would be surprised if they made it past the first round and shocked if they made it past the second.
