NHL 2024- 2025 Out of Town II

I don’t know if this was mentioned anywhere, but the takeaway/giveaway ratio this season is clearly skewed to giveaways in comparison to recent years.

I noted this with our defense first. And then I checked our forwards. And then I checked random players on other teams. It’s almost right across the board.

Examples:
Zach Werenski 23-24
70 games | 35/26
Zach Werenski 24-25
50 games | 29/76

Nate MacKinnon 23-24
82 games | 42/82
Nate MacKinnon 24-25
50 games | 17/79

Nick Suzuki 23-24
82 games | 41/63
Nick Suzuki 24-25
49 games 19/47

I just picked players at random.

Did anyone note a change in how the NHL determines what is a giveaway/takeaway? Was this mentioned anywhere?

I over simplify this

Give away is when you pass to the other team, it should be changed to the Carlo

Take away is when you strip a player from the puck for possession. Hardly happens

I likely do too, although to be fair, I’m not exactly counting stats either.

What would account for such a massive uptick in giveaways and the slight opposite in takeaways?

Head scratching.

The entire sport is based on take aways and give aways, one would think there would be a black and white definition and not left to a stat geek's opinion

After being static for years, there’s no doubt there’s a massive turn here.

League Leader in takeaways last season (Malkin) finished with 90 in 82 games.
This year it’s Makar, who is pacing for 66 in 82 games.

Giveaways in 2023-24, the leader was Pasta with 98.
This year it’s Weegar, who is pacing for 153 in 82 games.

88/98 in 2023-24
66/153 in 2024-25

I know this doesn’t… it doesn’t SEEM to matter. I’m focusing on relative minutiae. But there’s got to be a reason. It’s just strange to me.

There wasn’t anything good on TV this morning before the football games, so while I was looking for something to watch, I stumbled upon Classic Hockey on ESPN+. I decided to watch Game 7 of Bruins-Habs 1979. The Too Many Men Game. I was 12 when it happened and it ruined my summer. Never watched it since, but I decided to confront my demons….. Couple of things that stood out….

1. Terry O Reilly was slower than I remembered. Still love him though.
2. My Guy LaFluer PTSD has returned.
3. Gilbert was awesome, but damn, NHL goaltending has really improved over 45 years. Goaltending has probably improved more in 45 years, than any other position. Back then, goalies came WAY out of their creases, and basically relied on flopping on their side and stacking the pads in any high danger situation. The butterfly style was way more revolutionary than I originally thought.
4. The Too Many Men penalty was really blatant. God awful. I think we played 5+ seconds of hockey with 6 guys on the ice.

Worth watching, if anyone is in the mood for self inflicted pain. We went into the 3rd period up 3-1. Lost 5-4. Cash got 2 and Nifty got 2.

I honestly think that if the Bruins hold on and win that game 4-3 after Middleton's late third period goal in the Forum, Nifty is in the Hall of Fame.

And the Bruins definitely would have beaten the Rangers in the SC Final if they had won Game 7. What I remember most about that game was that I actually dislocated my big toe on my right foot when Lambert scored the OT goal. I was standing and pacing like a caged lion throughout the entire OT period and when Lambert scored I was so angry that I kicked out my right foot like I was kicking a FG. The problem was that right beside the TV was one of those old stereo systems on the floor and my toe smacked right into it. The sound it made was like giving one of your fingers a good crack. I still remember the Emergency Doctor trying really hard not to laugh when I told him what had happened - I'm sure he yucked it up pretty good once I left.

Nifty isn't in the HOF because he led the lawsuit against the NHL over the Alan Eagleson scandal, and nothing about his HOF worthy career was going to overcome that.

Reading here Pieterangelo pulled out of 4 nations & Canadian team thinking about adding Drew Doughty who has not played on a long time .Talk about a pile of favortism bullshit tourney this one is it .
