Rags showing why they might miss the playoffs

They gave up five goals, and the Lance hit 2 posts, a crossbar and had a marginal goalie interference wave-off

I don’t know if this was mentioned anywhere, but the takeaway/giveaway ratio this season is clearly skewed to giveaways in comparison to recent years.

I noted this with our defense first. And then I checked our forwards. And then I checked random players on other teams. It’s almost right across the board.

Examples:
Zach Werenski 23-24
70 games | 35/26
Zach Werenski 24-25
50 games | 29/76

Nate MacKinnon 23-24
82 games | 42/82
Nate MacKinnon 24-25
50 games | 17/79

Nick Suzuki 23-24
82 games | 41/63
Nick Suzuki 24-25
49 games 19/47

I just picked players at random.

Did anyone note a change in how the NHL determines what is a giveaway/takeaway? Was this mentioned anywhere?

I over simplify this

Give away is when you pass to the other team, it should be changed to the Carlo

Take away is when you strip a player from the puck for possession. Hardly happens

I likely do too, although to be fair, I’m not exactly counting stats either.

What would account for such a massive uptick in giveaways and the slight opposite in takeaways?

Head scratching.

The entire sport is based on take aways and give aways, one would think there would be a black and white definition and not left to a stat geek's opinion

After being static for years, there’s no doubt there’s a massive turn here.

League Leader in takeaways last season (Malkin) finished with 90 in 82 games.
This year it’s Makar, who is pacing for 66 in 82 games.

Giveaways in 2023-24, the leader was Pasta with 98.
This year it’s Weegar, who is pacing for 153 in 82 games.

88/98 in 2023-24
66/153 in 2024-25

I know this doesn’t… it doesn’t SEEM to matter. I’m focusing on relative minutiae. But there’s got to be a reason. It’s just strange to me.
