I haven't been impressed with Cozens either. We should aim higher for a #2C.

I think the key to the deal is Konsta Helenius. There is your 2C. I don’t know if you realize it or not but he’s only six months older than Hagens and is the same size, but about 10 pounds heavier. He just held this opposing center to one point in two games with two first round picks on his wings at juniors. From my viewing, he contained a potential first overall pick quite well. He’s almost a full year younger than Dvo playing in the same league.

Cozens I totally get the concern. With a change of scenery in coaching, can you unlock some of that enormous potential? he has speed to burn and size. I think you potentially get two guys that could fit into your top nine if not your top six.

Like I said, though, I would want Adam Kleber rather than the second round pick. If you want a 6 foot six right hand shot defenseman that can play defense, then he’s your guy. I watched him shut down Trevor Connolly twice in his draft year and he’s at a good program. He can marinate for two or three more years at the college level.

Krug's situation is unique but you absolutely do not team build around him. Sure, you have to leave his cap space if he at all looks like he's going to return. But you absolutely do not turn down deals for a 23yo player who should be the best Dman on your team, outside of Parayko, because of a Krug. He already cost us Sanheim, do not give Krug so much power as to making decisions based on what-ifs. If he ends up returning and we have 4 nhl caliber LHD, so be it, play a vet on his offside until a move can be made. And as far as Leddy, if he was choosing between being a healthy scratch on an Inconsistent team or playing on a playoff team for the next two seasons i think he would make his decision quite easily. Light work for DA.

In theory, I see your point in what you wish to accomplish. I’m just not sure with the ins and outs and behind the scenes how realistic it is to whitewash contracts.

I’d close shop. Nothing goes out. Not a single sell. The team has met the criteria imo that they went months without doing consistently; they’re manufacturing goals - it isn’t a bunch of rush chances and special teams - and defending - the top 9 seems viable every night, our defense absolutely stacked - nobody taking under 18 minutes. Might even go on tilt a little and jump the market taking a buy off the shelves. Not because I wanted to win a cup but just to crap on the buyers a bit - pull down supply even more. Fire our first into the sun for something nice.

If gms/owners wanna be buyers they need to be buyers. They can go to the market now with all our players off of it, pay higher prices because that’s what happens when supply is restricted, get no access to our group.

Maybe the next time you open the door to trades you’ll get somebody who isn’t going to kick the can or prioritize other deals, they’ll understand they can meet the price or get nothing, and if their process has a dozen board meetings with television executives involved forcing every decision to take a month they can just live with their tragic process.

I wasn't referencing Helenius (or that deal) at all. I don't want Cozens. I don't like the contract, the attitude, or the player really.

I am curious how many practices and how much opportunity Montgomery had to do some real coaching around the 2 week break. Are we seeing the fruit of some adjustments they’d been struggling to install during the busy schedule?

I realize the players got protected time off, but the coaches had some freedom they didn’t have time for normally.

He’s pretty cutthroat. He moved Stastny and Shattenkirk in similar situations, and Army had more personally on the line when he pulled those moves then. He can be the face of a divided move, take any blowback, and put Steen in a better position when he walks in, and he inherits a good cop role on top of it.

It’s also coherent with the direction and risk they took with offer sheets, and he has a bunch of players that carry aging risks that seem to have value they haven’t had in quite a while (assumption, of course, going back to that opening sentence above).

Also, the Blues communicate effectively with their fans and I think have credibility to weather the PR blowback, in contrast to Mozeliak down the road and Dewitt…at this stage in that franchise.

The Blues are negotiating from a position of power. They have some of the better players that are available but they're also in a position where they don't need to move anybody. Most of the players on this team can have a productive place on this team over the next season or two while we integrate some younger talent and we have the cap space and the flexibility to add big contracts in the offseason.

If you want to add a potential impact player from the Blues, you better come with an offer that's impactful for us as well, but if I'm Army, I give this team another couple games because this is the best hockey we've seen in 2.5 seasons. They are smothering teams right now.

Now that specific deal might not do much for us, but the point is, the value of some of our guys are through the roof right now. It would be negligent of Army to not at least find out what the offers would be, and if it's enough, pull the trigger if it benefits the future core.

Let's say Jets come in and offer 1st+Perfetti+Salomonsson. I'm arguably the biggest Parayko guy here, and I'm absolutely considering that deal. I'm perfectly fine if we keep him and hope that he ages like fine wine, I mean he's having one of his best seasons, maybe his best, at age 31, maybe he is a guy that plays very high end hockey through his mid 30s. But, when someone's value is at their peak, and there is some amount of uncertainty of what they will be when we are competing again, you have to consider the value.

Would it tank our chances this season? Absolutely, but it's about maxmizing our chances 2-3 seasons from now.

This. Closing up shop makes ZERO sense. If the offers just aren't there, i get holding on our non-UFAs, but absolutely keep listening on everyone, this is a 2026-2027 team and beyond. Make moves based on the next window, even if they hurt the short term.

If you're considering these deals now, then I'd argue your timing is off by about three months. These guys have term and they are dragging the team back into the playoff fight.

I get the argument that with time the assets will get older and could reduce their value, but the counter point is that next year the cap rises at a greater clip which provides even MORE value for the existing contract--with the bonus that two years left is more palatable to a buying team than three (e.g., Schenn). I think the existing term is a depressing factor at this point. But when the new season calendar year flips on July 1, there's more teams calling. Just imagine if we end up making the playoffs and win a round.

That's my preference at this juncture. Let the team roll for the remainder of the season unless we go these next games before the TDL with subpar performances.

But I'm not punting on this season yet*. I'd argue taking this final push into context reduces their TDL value for us. Just also throwing it out there that the way the team is performing right now should increase the value of everyone being talked about.

By nature, I'm 100% not a conspiracy theorist, but something last night caught my ear. Did anyone listen to the postgame interview with Schenn? It was weird that near the end of the interview he said, and I'm paraphrasing a bit as I don't remember the exact words: "I wanted to say thanks for the way you have always treated me". Almost as if he expected that he might get moved. Also, could just be that they were complimentary of his dad with him having the opportunity to announce the lineups. Who knows, but it just struck me as odd. Probably nothing, but curious if anyone else heard the interview.

Yeah, UFA is a clear distinction on Stastny and Shattenkirk, but the point I am aiming to make is that when the Blues are on the fringe of playoffs, Army has pulled the trigger in the past.

UFA cuts one way, but there are also distinguishing factors that cut the other way too.

1. Army had more personal skin in the game in the past.

2. Blues have a chance to hand Steen a cleaner situation here, and set up his initial years with more buffer and options

3. Many of these players, though having term, seem to be at or near the higher point in their value levels over the past several years.
