Fine signing, 1 year for stupid cheap. Apparently we tried to sign him the first time he was bought out but we wouldn't give him 4 years and Dallas would.
You did see the 2.25 mil in performance bonuses, right?
Potentially 3 mil isn't what I'd call "stupid cheap".

Last year, he was a marginal improvement over Scandella.
That said, it's not like he's going to get any better at age 40 and it's highly likely he declines even further over the next year.
As a 3rd pairing PK specialist, I suppose we could do worse. However, we now have 8 D on 1-way contracts(not counting Kessel) with 6 of them being LHD.

At the moment, I'd have to chalk this up as a head scratcher. It isn't a move that we really needed to make.
If it turns out to be a prelude to a Krug trade, it's a lot more understandable.

I expect Suter to be a flop, but its one year and lowest salary possible. I expect Suter to be just going through the motions. Nothing to see here. He's a warm body who isn't a developing rookie. I don't even care about the performance clauses, because I don't expect him to reach any.

All the performance bonuses are tied to games played, so all he needs to do is be a warm body.

This perfectly sums up the issue with evaluating defensemen that get the truly difficult minutes through advanced metrics. Defensively, Parayko has always been elite. This graphic really just illustrates when Parayko's role went from more of a 2-way usage where Petro got the tough minutes to the main shutdown role that he currently has. He never got worse offensively, his role simply changed. At least these people are starting to display graphics that highlight each part of the game as opposed to the summarized score like they used to.

I bet he misses those marks too. But hey, if he puts his head down and contributes to the team, good for him for earning it. But getting bought out 2 times is not a vote of confidence that he's a great guy to have on your team.

Part of me thinks that the 2nd buyout will cause him to wake up and realize he can’t be a dickhead anymore.

If Kyrie Irving can change and be a legit leader and likable person, so can Ryan Suter lol.

He shouldn't have been bought out the first time, especially considering Parise was also bought out (and rightfully deserved it).

I don't think Suter is a bad player nd can be a mentor to our young D, I just don't like the fact that he's a cancer in the room.

The addition of Gary Suter is a puzzler. I thought he was finished when Minnesota bought him out years ago. I thought Dallas was dumb to sign him for multiple years.
Can he still play the game at the NHL level? Even with limited minutes?
Maybe they hope he can hold up one year until Lidstein is ready.

The addituon of Gary would be. It's 40-year old Ryan Suter, not 60 year old Gary. Does it make a bit more sense? <Just teasing>

I would push back pretty hard on that assessment. When you play against better players, it's absolutely going to affect how you play and what you're capable of doing. When Parayko was playing a more sheltered role behind AP, he could do more offensively b/c he was playing against the top 4 instead of the top pair, and he was playing against the middle 6 and not the top line. Take Colorado for example. Playing as the top guy, you go up against Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar. Playing in his old role, you match up against Casey Middlestat and Sam Girard. It's pretty obvious there's a massive difference there.

Parayko had a much easier QoC when we had AP, and in fairness to him, he crushed those minutes. Absolutely crushed them. The problem is, that when we moved on from AP and elevated Parayko into that role, it showed that he wasn't capable of providing what AP could on both sides of the ice. I agree that his D has always been borderline elite, especially with the right partner. But his offense has struggled against top players b/c he's simply not that good on offense in comparison.

This is why imo the hardest thing to find is a true #1 2-way D. There are really only 5-10 in the entire league at any given time. We had one and won a Cup with him, and that's why so many people are still frustrated that we let him walk away for nothing.

Wait are people really arguing that Parayko is the same offensively as AP? Or just that when he got put into AP's position he magically didn't remember how to play offense but we shouldn't hold that against him? I'm struggling to understand what the point of these comments are.

AP was our bona-fide stud #1 D who put up around 45-50 points a season playing with the Gunnarssons, Edmundsons, and Coliaicovos of the world, while also handling top level QoC deployment. Parayko has a career high of 35 points and he has consistently played with the next best defenseman on our roster not named Alex Pietrangelo (Jay-Bo and now Leddy).

I love Parayko, but to say he's, "Not lost his offense, he's just playing against harder players,".....then he's kinda lost his offense b/c he can't do it against better players.

This is Kent Huskins erasure!

No, I'm arguing he's the same player that he's always been, but the advanced stat models do a poor job of evaluating defensemen in varying roles.

Parayko was never as good offensively as the early years indicated, but he's not as bad as the current model indicates.

I never compared the abilities of Petro and Parayko.

Remember when the blues had a glaring 1C issue a few years ago? Then moves were made to address it? It took time. They brought in stastny, tried with leterha, brought in schenn and then finally there was hope in O'Reilly. All through those years, there was discussion on the "right" way to get a 1c. The blues center prospect pool was also extremely bleak back then.

Now, Thomas and dvorsky may end up being a petro parayko type of strength and maybe the elusive 1D is able to be pilfered from another foolish GM. The scenarios aren't the same, but it took a while to finally get O'Reilly, the 1c, after multiple attempts and disappointing seasons.

We wasted an entire core trying to find that #1C. Maybe people forget that part. And when we finally got one it only lasted a couple years. Thankfully we got to the promised land in that small window.
