Toronto has had pretty much the worst PP of the league to start the year, Matthews gets injured, and now their PP is the hottest in the league.

Also, it's making me sick seeing Ovechkin score. Can't believe the nightmare of him passing Gretzky is about to happen.
How can watching a player break a record be a nightmare?

From a hockey perspective, watching him as just the hockey player, Ovie breaking the record would be awesome.

Still can't stand him as a person, I think you know why. And I personally find all this hyping up of him quite sickening.

I've tried to make my peace with it. While I certainly don't have any respect for his political views/whatever you want to call 'em, what the man is doing from a hockey perspective is worth saluting and celebrating. The man is changing the history books.

As a country, I 100% think Russia should not be allowed in the international stages until the situation changes. But Ovie is a person: a hockey player, a Washington Capital, a winger, a history shaping star. What he is doing is amazing.

f*** politics. I don't even wanna know who our Avs guys voted for. I mean, I can't stand Teemu Selänne one of the Finnish goats of the game anymore since he started voicing his opinions publicly.

The double standard is hilarious. Leave the politics out of it for everyone, don't decide to use it against Ovechkin and only Ovechkin.
If other Russian players would share the same views publicly, you can bet there would be the same sentiment towards them as well. While Zadorov is the only one publicly speaking against the current regime and war, Ovie is the only player who still poses with the main :eek::eek::eek: himself. At least the others know when to shut up.

Yeah his stock has really come down when he has opened his mouth after his career has ended

I hope you never have to deal with finding out the views of most athletes. You might be done with sports all together.

Greatest goalscorer in NHL history about to break a significant Gretzky record many thought was unreachable.... "It's disgusting because of his political views". Come on, it's just a hockey game lol. We're not sitting at the dinner table with Ovy talking his personal beliefs.

People talk about those old Soviet squads and their hockey prowess as far as saying guys like Tretiak and Kharlamov are some of the very best ever and those guys were straight up Soviets haha.

Look, the point here is that Ovie has specifically been outspoken about his political views. That's the difference. I'm not naive enough to think that his views are something unique among Russian players.

The vast majority of the players are smart enough to keep their politics to themselves. That's the point.

The gnashing of teeth over Ovi's leaning is hilarious. Especially when Gretz is MAGA too
Ovechkin has literally supported the invasion of Ukraine, and not denounced his views. I don't really see how that is comparable to supporting Trump. Someone posted a photo of Eichel being at one of his rallies a few pages ago. No-one batted an eye.

How many athletes supported the Iraq invasion? Did you denounce them all?

And I've seen lots of people mad at Gretz and Eichel for "supporting fascism and the downfall of democracy" for a while on other social media sites
