I don't think he meant for that to happen, he just saw the ref in his way, got pissed, and shoved him harder than he should have, without thinking about it. Then realized after it was too late that he f***ed up.
Lol no, mate. Right before he hits the ref, he is staring/focusing all his effort at the puck in the right corner, and when he turns his head back straight, he has a natural reaction to protect himself. I think he was just shocked and taken off guard that somebody was there (ref or player), and he protected himself by pushing him. Then he realised what he did was absolutely Pejorative Slured. Totally suspendable, but thinking he pushed the ref because he was angry is the biggest jump to conclusion post I've read in here quite a while.

I maintain it was a complete freak accident.

I do put a lot of blame of the official for sticking his ground on the faceoff dot as play was coming towards him. He should have been moving back to the side boards.

To give a kid 10 games for this is bullshit and a complete miscarriage of justice. It's essential for the officials to get the f*** out of the way.

You're giving him way too much credit.

Look at his right arm. He shoves him extremely hard like he's thinking, "get away from me" then realizes he did it way too hard.

I think that's the reason for the 10 game suspension. I hate the refs but you can't let players do that to officials.

I dunno, extremely hard is relative. If he does that to a player who is prepared for contact, that's going to have the same effect as slapping him with a stuffed bear. It looks way worse because the ref isn't ready for it at all.

I definitely agree that accidental or not, you have to make an example out of Beckman to make sure you don't set a bad precedent.

Sure, but relative works both ways. The ref isn't a heavily padded strong hockey player. That's why you can't touch them.

He was as prepared as he could be, nothing the ref could have done there, aside from get out of the way obviously.

If a 200 lb athlete got in a scrawny guy's face, and shoved him on the street like that, he'd go flying too.

He wasn't thinking when he did it, that's the problem.

He has lost the plot and it's not great when he has to keep going up there with the mea culpas. Assuming there's no miracle happening considering they're technically still alive, he might be coaching his final four games in the NHL. It took a lot for him to even get another shot after the embarrassing way he left the Avs.

I don't know, I always like when a coach takes some responsibility, and I think players do too.

He was in a tough spot there. His goalie is getting lit up for 8 goals and he's got a rookie who hasn't played in the NHL before backing up.

I think it was an ok decision. Not like he knew it was gonna be a blowout, and Lennox only let in one goal. Patty is probably just trying to take some pressure off the rookie, like he's done before.

The more I think about it, the more I think Patty played that the right way.

If he puts Lennox in earlier in the blowout, he's risking him getting lit up too. But he doesn't want to leave Hogberg in there for 9 goals. He knows first hand what that's like.

So putting him in with 5 minutes or so to go, so he doesn't get lit up, and then when he's asked about it, he takes the pressure off the rookie by blaming himself for making him travel and play back to back, was probably the optimal play.

If this is the last hurrah for St. Patrick as an HC in the NHL, I sure hope TNT pounces on him with a blank check to come sit next to Hank and give him some goalie support in the studio.

Gretzky, Roy and Hank talking hockey and Biz talking shit and getting daggers from Roy would be appointment television viewing.

Patty has said many times before he never wants to be an analyst or TV personality of any kind.

He loves being close to the game far too much. Whether it’s as the three-head monster of owner/GM/coach of the Remparts or as an NHL coach, he will stay close to the game. He loves it way too much.

Dude deserves to be happy, so I can't blame him.

I don't think it's easy for highly intense competitors to be happy either.

Can you imagine Patty Roy going on a vacation to sit on the beach and read a book?
He'd be re-reading Ken Dryden's The Game for the 978th time.

Then he'd walk over to the pool bar, order a rum runner and start drawing up new defensive schemes on the back of the cocktail napkins.

I would love the be that bartender though.

He'd also be on the bike facing away from the beach while reading and calling his GM about a player he thinks would help their PK at the same time.

These guys can't switch off.

Sidney Crosby 10th in the league in points after tonight.

It is a god damn shame what the end of his career looks like on an awful Penguins team.

Then again, he apparently wanted them to keep Malkin and Letang no matter what, and was in favour of them trading for Karlsson.

He has won everything there is. I commend him for striving to be one of those 1 club men in sports, there are not that many.

We agree that he shouldn't have done it, I just think the push looked much harder than it actually was. If he had really wanted to deck that ref, he could have gone way harder.

He’s a real anomaly in modern sports. When you have Messi leave Barca and Brady play for the Bucks you know loyalty is largely dead
It wasn't that big in the first place. How many can you name of the top of your head? It's even rarer in soccer because of the different leagues and no drafts. Totti, Giggs, Puyol come into mind now when thinking about it.
