He was playing really well to start the year. Then got absolutely destroyed on a hit. Was never the same after that. Acts like he's now afraid of contact of any kind whether it's given or taken.
Can't imagine he's in a great place mentally right now either.

Which hit are you referring to? I don't remember a single event triggering the suckness but I could be wrong.

It was early in the year. I can’t even remember who they were playing, but he got clobbered right outside offensive blueline, along the benches, and then his play went to shit.

I actually pulled it up from a conversation with a friend, I mentioned a hit he took on November 15th. Capitals game so my guess is Tom Wilson

I vividly remember the Buffalo game where his streak ended. He had basically open net to score and didnt. Looked mentally broken after that. Propably isnt the cause, but the face is still on my mind when failed to score against his old team and sucked after that..

It is one thing to have every skill in the world. Alexander Daigle come to mind. It's another thing entirely to actually be able to stand the withering pressure of constant expectations. Some folks you never thought will actually shine in these situations... sometimes its just too much. I think you hit the nail on the head though... he didn't become stupid or forget how to play the game... something got out of synch between his ears. I'm not sure he's a SC Champion 2C, but I still would not be surprised to see him have a relatively decent career still as long as he can slow the pace down in his own mind a bit.
Apparently Rantanen's new nickname is Rentanen since he's been living out of a suitcase since the first trade
