i agree with both sides of the argument. Obviously fans connect with Vladdy as it stands. He's hugely popular based on his play AND on his personality. There's clearly a connection with him and Torontonians that goes beyond language.

But still it would be a nice if he spoke SOME english for team/media stuff.

I couldn’t give a flying flick if he uses an interpreter or not. I care more about his poor decisions on what to swing at when things aren’t going well. But it does show a certain laziness to not communicate in English when he’s been in NA for so many years. Like others have mentioned, you don’t become proficient at a language if you don’t practice it. They tend to only converse with their Latino mates most of the time and are happy with that.

That's just not true at all. Last year they had the whole "barrio" thing, but guys like Springer and Manoah were constantly there, too. Vlad has always interacted with everyone on the team. This year we probably see him spending more time talking to Bo and Springer than anyone else. But it makes sense that players with the same first language and background would gravitate towards each other to some extent, and it exists in other sports, too; all the Swedes on the Leafs the last couple years, for example, were particularly close.

I'm curious why you would attribute it to laziness when you have no clue how much he works at it. Like the Ichiro example I posted, he practiced it and talked to his teammates in English all the time, but he was never comfortable expressing himself to the fans without an interpreter. There's nothing wrong with that. They're paid to play baseball, and learning another language should be secondary.

I think Latino players are lazy in this respect, partly because teams are forced to carry spanish interpreters for many years now.

I'd argue there's a larger contingent of Spanish-speaking players that learn how to converse in English to improve communications with their teammates than there are English-speaking players that learn Spanish. There have been players on record as having learned Spanish to do just that (McLouth, Dozier, Alonso), but there's also a plethora of Latin ESL players that have a much better command of their second language. Nowadays most (if not all) organizations that have Latin-based facilities operate communication and lifestyle programs to help transition young players to playing in North America. Some even have Spanish lessons for their NA side players to help with inclusion.

Regardless that shouldn't harm the natures of connectedness between players and fans. Like, I wouldn't say Soto and Tatis Jr are bigger faces of the game than Ohtani because they're fluent in two languages.

Vladdy's hesitancy to interview in English is also due to a moment where the media misinterpreted an English speaking comment he issued. Plus it's always better to have a legitimate question being posed rather than "why do you eat bananas?" because they try to meme you for your lack of ESL communication. I know for me I have a hard time speaking in my second language because I feel embarrassed that it's not to the level of the listener.

He throws an average slider, but his fastball might be the best fastball in baseball.

He has a good fastball and wipeout slider that falls off the plate. His other slider with less break that stays in the strike zone is a dangerous pitch to be throwing and he throws it far too often. Like the last pitch of last nights game. It was a meatball

FanGraphs did an article on him this week.

I don't care how much he works at it but I'd surmise not enough. He's been in Toronto for 5 seasons and he still can't communicate during interviews in one of our official languages. You would think that in that time, and the four previous years in NA, that he'd be comfortable enough to answer a few questions in our language. I guarantee you that if I lived in China for 5 years, and I wanted to learn the language so I can converse in it comfortably, I'd do it with no problem. How do I know? I've done it with another language.

Like I said, not a big deal to me, nor probably to the poster who first brought this up, but I do find it curious.
Congrats. Not everyone has the same language skills or educational background or life experiences as you.

Like, for example, a kid growing up in a foreign country who leaves school at 12 years old to focus exclusively on baseball may not have such an easy time picking up a new language. And let's say that kid dedicates his entire life to baseball and has an opportunity to make hundreds of millions of dollars and faces plenty of very public criticism every time he doesn't meet expectations along the way... that kid may choose to focus more on baseball than on learning another language to your standards.

Plus conversing is very different from taking interview questions where your voice will be heard by hundreds of thousands of people. Maybe he also doesn't want to get mocked for his accent? The "Sakatoon" promo for the winter tour is one example of it being funny and lighthearted, but could be pushed too far.

This team is so frustrating to watch offensively. Atkins made a real mess of this roster. They’re in that purgatory territory right now of being too good to trade away players but clearly not good enough to win consistently.

Yeah, trading Hernandez was a big mistake. So what if they had no plans to resign him after this year. They got a middle reliever for him thats all.

Hernandez was great protection for Vladdy in the lineup. they had to pitch to him, because Teo was right behind.

I don’t have an issue with trading Teo, he was clearly on the decline.

The issue is not adding significantly to the offense after trading him.

They just need the guys they have to go back to somewhat normal (Kirk/Vladdy/Springer etc). Chapman has been trash after the 1st month as well. But I agree they need to add some offense

It was a risky series of offseason moves to begin with. I posted that several times at the time. I’m not sure why Atkins continues to get the benefit of the doubt when he hasn’t really proven himself to be worthy of such benefit.

Looks like we’re going to lose the first game of the series again. I’ll take it as long as we win the series like the last few.
