I missed the Baez thing. What happened and will it be news worthy? I saw this in his contract. Baez may opt out of contract after 2023 season

He was on 3rd and on a shallow/mid depth fly ball to right he didn't even think about scoring on the sac fly. Like he just stood straight up , foot on the base and never once moved or flinched or got into a set position before deciding against running. It's like he knew he wasn't going to run before the ball was even caught.

On third, fly ball to medium depth RF. Springer set up to throw home while Baez casually walked back and stood on third. He didn't line up to run or bluff or anything. He just stood on the base and didn't even watch the throw.

Aww thanks!

When you are in a situation for a Sac Fly from 3rd and the ball is shallow you should at least bluff at attempt or look like your going to draw a throw or be ready if something wierd happens

Baez went back to third and check his email on his phone

Some weird base running aside today I love the fundamentals of this group. That bunt that KK laid down in the 10th was something this team has been missing for a while.

Plus the patience to take the walks in the 9th and the back to back sac flies to tie the game. Nothing flashy, just let the Tigers beat themselves and didn’t try to do too much.

Lol how bad is our 3rd base coach? Has one job and constantly flubs it.
Oddly enough, the numbers since the start of 2022 suggest the Jays are probably the best in baseball at going home. They've been thrown out at the plate 7 times in that span, with the league average at 16 and the Mariners (6) as the only other team under 10.

You could say that part of that is because they've haven't been a particularly fast team, so they hold at third a lot, but:

Scoring from 2B on a single:
2022 League average - 60%
2022 Jays - 66.8%
2023 Jays - 80%

Scoring from 1B on a double:
2022 League average - 41.2%
2022 Jays - 43.6%
2023 Jays - 45.4%

I don't know. I know every example of a bad send/hold stands out more than a good one (especially when the bad one is as bad a last night's), but if you have a relatively slow team that rarely ever gets thrown out at the plate but still scores at a well above average rate, that should reflect well on the 3B coach, shouldn't it?

Tbh I’ve also seen some big brain sends and the Jays still end up scoring on a bad throw or in the KC game the cut off holding onto the ball too long/catcher not attempting to tag. Sometimes the aggressiveness pays off, other times we see some brutal outs like last night. One thing is for certain, the Jays baserunning this year should standout more with Varsho, Kiermaier, and Merrifield on the team (and no more Gurriel or Teo).

Yeah, I imagine the potential for the other team to make a mistake has to be part of the calculation, right? That's what made last night's such a bad one - Vlad was out by so much that even if it was a poor throw by the OF and a slow turn by the cut-off man and an offline throw where they catcher had to lunge back to the plate... he probably still would have been out.

George, buddy. I appreciate the 'never give up' attitude but come on man. The fight's over and you've lost.

Just shave your head already. :sarcasm:
lol. his hair looks good. he's still got a few years to go before he needs to take your advise.

Luis Rivera with a god awful game last night. First time he sent Vlad I would chalk that up to not knowing how the new outfield plays, but when Vlad got caught in the run down?

Rivera has his hands up and Vlad runs through the stop sign. Unless there was another run down later in the game I'm missing.
