I have to give the Jays a lot of credit in this series. They showed up and are really kicking the shit out of the Yankees. I know that their offense has been really erratic to say the least this year. But so far down the stretch here they've shown up.

They may not even need that many considering how many times Seattle and Texas play each other.

Is it 6 even with those 7 Seattle Texas games?? Dam. I thought that number would have been much lower
The Yankees were so close!

In the worst case scenario (for the Jays) the loser of the 7 game TEX/SEA series will have 3 wins. It (the loser) can also win the 3 other games left on their schedule giving the team 6 more wins before the season ends.

Since they Jays are currently a game ahead of both TEX and SEA they only need to match that 6 win total to finish ahead in the standings.
Ohh @MS I just remembered. I meant to ask about the Houston and Seattle series. Doesn’t that series mean the magic number of 6 could be lower when you count it?

Gausman's been good outside of some recent hiccups.

(yes, this is my mildly passive-aggressive way of noting that Gausman is the "real" ace of the Jays' staff because he's better than Manoah. Yes, even last year. He got hosed on Cy Young votes.)
They'll be gone first decent team they play. You see how they played against Rangers.

There was clearly something wrong on his last run on base in the first game of this series.
My father was bitching about Vlad not playing, calling him a wimp and other things. And I was just sitting there thinking, "The guy's already not the fastest baserunner around, and you want him trying to run the bases on a sore knee?"

Jays have decent numbers against Cole, but with this year’s offense I’m not expecting a win tomorrow.

I don't know what Vladdy's problem is. I mean... Rumblin' Tubbs McGornahan from the 1927 Philadelphia Athletics once ran the bases on a leg he broke in 3 places after he fell down the stadium stairs during a scuffle with an usher who accused him of slandering Calvin Coolidge. Of course 3 days later he took a Smoky Joe Wood screaming 90 mph fastball off the leg, shattering it and ending with him getting sepsis and dying in hospital a week later, but he still gutted it out and played through the pain like a real man, dammit! :sarcasm:

(I have no idea where this came from.)

Nope.

Houston is also 85-68 so even if they lose the 3 games against the Mariners they could win the other 6 to get to 91 wins.

We do have the tiebreaker but we’d still have to win 6 games to get to 91.

Wasn’t able to watch but looks like a nice clean game overall. Schneider looks like he’s ice cold at the moment. Might be time for a day off. It’s crazy how bad Richards era is now from that bad span but he’s had two clean appearances in a row now maybe three?
I just don't trust him sadly. He was awful last year and brief awful early I think. His long stretch of ELITE was so nice. I want him to get back to form badly BUT I don't know if I trust him.

The Jays can no longer win the division (they lose the tiebreaker versus Baltimore).

They could catch Tampa, but that is tough (8GB with 10 remaining).

Toronto is 2nd and a half game up on Houston, but one of the 3 behind us has to win the AL West.

With 10 games left, here's a look at defense:

Kirk should be one of the 3 finalists for the GG (Heim is the likely winner, but Kirk is demolishing everyone in DRS).

Vlad will finish as the worst defensive 1B in baseball (again, he was doing well until he got banged up then he seems to have played through some injuries).

Gimenez in Cleveland should win the GG at 2B (one of the easier ones). Toronto's best defensive players are all outside the top 5.

At SS, the funny business comes back. Franco was statistically the best SS when he played, but due to his suspension, Baez and Witt Jr put up some counting stats to make a valid argument to avoid the black eye of giving this to Franco. Baez should be slightly ahead of the two.

3B is another position where Def and DRS vary greatly. By DRS, Chapman should win. By Def, he's the 4th best 3B in the AL (behind guys with -2, -4, and 1 DRS respectively).

The OF looks like it should have been settled months ago. The best 3 OF in the AL are Kwan, Kiermaier and Varsho by a landslide.

The Jays can win tonight for sure if Berrios keeps it together against their pop gun offence. We only need 3 or 4 runs to win. The Yankee offence is absolute dog poo

With OF going by specific position now, there's almost no chance both Kiermaier and Varsho win.

LF would be a toss-up between Varsho and Kwan, but Kwan has played the full season there and his advanced stats are better. Should be Kwan.

CF is going to be weird. Varsho has been by far the best CF in the AL this year, and not just on a rate basis. Despite being 17th in the AL in innings in CF, he's first in DRS (17, tied with Kiermaier... Isbel at 13 is the only other in double-digits), first in UZR (at 8.5 with McCormick next at 5.7), 5th in OAA, and 1st in DEF. Considering how little he's played there, that's insane. Varsho should win it, but I'll guess it ends up going to Kiermaier and Varsho isn't even a finalist.

RF looks like a toss-up, with Verdugo and Garcia as the likely front-runners.

Yeah, the Yankees offense is what a lot of people seem to think the Jays offense is.

Yes, agreed. Jays offence is ok. Not as good as we hoped, but not as bad as people think they are. Anyway, let’s keep going streaking and grab a 6th straight win!

I wonder if there would be any consideration for the UTIL GG for Varsho. +26 DRS/+10 OAA at two positions has to be in the running for something. Right???

Possibly. For some reason I doubt the voters consider multiple OF positions as "utility", though.

He should probably get some consideration for a platinum glove too since he leads the league in DRS.
