I don't worry about caps.

That's not my job.

And it isn't yours either.

But that said, I highly doubt Fitz is going to do what you suggest.
But all roster management decisions have to be made with the salary cap in mind.

Analyzing decisions without budget constraints in mind is just pointless, I mean buying a car for 80k USD is smarter decision when you earn 150k yearly than when you earn 30k yearly. Context is important.

CJ said he's heard Vegas is a place Meier wants to go. It's not NJ or bust.
If you're talking about CJ Turtoro, that's a guy who knows virtually nothing about hockey. His Twitter account is essentially unintentional comedy.

Also, Vegas reportedly gave up Zach Dean for Barbashev and has literally no A-level prospects and only one who might be B+ (Sapovaliv). Vegas is out.

I'm going to guess the Meier sweeps are between New Jersey and maybe Seattle with Buffalo as a dark horse if they get motivated.

I love emotions that bring deadline or draft day. It`s very intense and fun. And I feeling the same now. But I have a bad gut feeling that no one promises us that everything will happen now. As a result, inside me there is an interesting cocktail of inspired enthusiasm and a sour feeling of possible nothing.

I’m guilty of it as well, but it is helpful if you say xxx is reporting xxx that you provide a link to said report. If it is in a long audio clip, provide a time stamp.

Now that you put it that way, that's the first plausible explanation I've heard over why they wouldn't allow extension talks....leave some hope remaining for other teams and don't let it get out he'll only extend one spot cause that would drive down value Kane-style. I'm not sure how true that is though, or if we're even THE destination.
Yeah it could also be that he WONT sign in New Jersey but Fitz is clearly the most desperate and has the best pool of potential returns.

…..but that’s probably not it :sarcasm:

Look, I want Timo, I think he’s great and I think he’s a great fit.

But overpaying for him in a trade “because we can afford to” is just bad asset management. If another team wants to be crazy, let them.
But again, are we overvaluing Holtz, an undersized d-man, and late 1st rounders? This years pick might be the 30th OA.

No, because they have no leverage. There's not some amazing package waiting out there for this guy either now or in the summer.

Toronto is a good team. They were somewhere not ready, somewhere not lucky to play against Tampa in the first round, somewhere Campbell ruined them.
It`s ok to have 4 great players and put good vets on their lines.
You already have Palat, Hischier, Hughes, Hamilton on significant deals. Marino/Siegenthaler aren't super cheap, Tatar/Haula will require replacements. Mercer will require a very significant salary increase in 2024. I understand where you're coming from but going Meier + Bratt route will require extreme creativity, hoping that prospects pan out (mostly Nemec and Luke Hughes) so we can have cheap contributors on ELC and also hoping that veterans like Palat, Hamilton and Meier don't break.

To be absolutely honest, I will be in minority here but I wouldn't be unhappy if Meier landed elsewhere. He's a great player who's a fantastic fit stylistically but the risk is also quite high and having a roster with 3 contributing lines can also lead to the cup. That being said, the most important thing here is the cost both in terms of assets sent to SJ and the cap hit of the potential extension.

There really aren't that many players I'd move that package for. No one that has been traded yet or is rumored to be available. It's a strong package and it possibly was dangled quire early, leaked, and that's why we're getting all these other aggressive moves in response cause it opened a lot of GMs' eyes.

If I had to guess the state of negotiations (AND THIS IS A PURE GUESS) it is this.

San Jose has narrowed down the core packages to their top 2. The other teams are thus out. However there is still work to be done on around the periphery of their preferred deal to make it work. Stuff like retaining salary, taking a contract back, balancing out contract, whether a late pick is added for all this stuff ect.

That would mean the Devils are leading because they have to do all that stuff for Meier to fit under the Devils cap. Vegas because Stone is on LTIR is more straight forward. Of course all that stuff could torpedo a deal so both teams are in it.

That’s the gas station sushi you ate last night … not enthusiasm and explains the sour feeling

Meier is young. 1-1.5 mil doesnt change nothing. You can always sign cheap vets. Mcleod and Bastian are good enough to play 13-15 minutes. If we want to start to summ salaries of future Mercer deal, lets start. For now we have enough spave so sign Meier and Bratt and using young players on ELC and cheap vets.

Holtz is, even today after we’ve spent all season jerking him around, a top-50ish prospect. Mukh is a recent first who’s playing quite well in the KHL. Casey is having a very fine year I’m the ncaa despite not getting that much opportunity behind guys like Luke. A first is a first and whatever.

I’m fine giving up some of these assets. I’m not fine giving up all of these assets or two firsts or whatever the “stupid” price would be.
