WC: 2023 Switzerland Roster Talk

And once by bad timing in making a child. :)

But yeah, I'm a Canes-fan tonight.

I'm not sure if I would call up Schmid, by the way. Who would you cut for him?

I am not sure, but given that Mayer's form came out of nowhere and may very well be a one off, and that Genoni is already declining and not getting any younger, I would definitely want to take a look at the potential goalie of the future.

I guess my cut would be Mayer as he didn't look good on the first goal and the shot on the crossbar today. I know Genoni also had a terrible game against Latvia last week, but he was solid against Finland yesterday and is more proven.

In any case, I want to see what JvP and Schmid can do at the WC.

Any of Mayer and Genoni. Schmid and Van Pottelberghe are clearly the best goalies with Swiss passports right now and they're much younger than both Genoni and Mayer. Schmid is probably not quite as good as Van Pottelberghe just yet but the latter is coming off a very bad injury so having a good nr.2 or 1b would be nice.

If Schmid is added I guess Mayer is the one who should get cut because Genoni is much more experienced and proven when it comes to international games.

There is no way Fischer cuts Genoni.

And yeah, I want to see JvP, too. I think he could potentially outplay Genoni.

Final roster

Goalies (3): Leonardo Genoni (EV Zug), Robert Mayer (Genève-Servette HC), Joren Van Pottelberghe (EHC Biel-Bienne),

Defense (8): Tim Berni (Columbus Blue Jackets / NHL), Michael Fora (HC Davos), Tobias Geisser (EV Zug), Andrea Glauser (Lausanne HC), Dean Kukan (ZSC Lions) Romain Loeffel (SC Bern), Christian Marti (ZSC Lions), Janis Moser (Arizona Coyotes / NHL)

Forwards (14): Andres Ambühl (HC Davos), Christoph Bertschy (Fribourg-Gottéron), Enzo Corvi (HC Davos), Gaëtan Haas (EHC Biel-Bienne), Fabrice Herzog (EV Zug), Mike Künzle (EHC Biel-Bienne), Denis Malgin (Colorado Avalanche / NHL), Marco Miranda (Genève-Servette HC), Nino Niederreiter (Winnipeg Jets / NHL), Damien Riat (Lausanne HC), Tanner Richard (Genève-Servette HC), Sven Senteler (EV Zug), Dario Simion (EV Zug), Calvin Thürkauf (HC Lugano)

No word on Fiala, so they're still keeping that open.

I guess Fischer will nominate 2G, 7D and 12F for Saturday, so he has spots open for Siegenthaler, Fiala, Hischier and Schmid.

So the Canes have 3 games to finish the serie. They have to finish that.

So if they do that and Fiala gets finally the clearance from the Kings I think it's probably for next Thursdays game vs. Slovakia.

My choices for players not to register would be:
Mayer; Glauser; Künzle and Riat.

So for the first 3 games the roster would look like this:
Genoni / JvP

Moser - Fora
Kukan - Marti
Berni - Geisser
Loeffel

Ambühl - Corvi - Niederreiter
Miranda - Malgin - Simion
Herzog - Haas - Senteler
Thürkauf - Richard - Bertschy

Or something like that. Malgin and Simion played last year together (with Suter IIRC). Nino and Corvi also played in the same line. Senteler played too good to let him out. (You could use Riat or Künzle in that spot). The last line is pretty set I guess.
I'd prefer Glauser over Fora but that won't happen. And Loeffel was too good in the preparation games to scratch him.

That's what I'd do too. Riat was the placeholder for Niederreiter during the last game, and Künzle is a no brainer for the next player to be scratched.

Malgin with Simion worked well last year, and Miranda could play Suter's role. Then Senteler moves to Künzle's spot.

NJ plays on Thursday, Saturday and Monday. That's plenty of time to get potential additions for the key games

Let's play a prediction game: Top 3 Point Predictions for the tournament for Swiss players?
Feel free to add any reasoning also if needed.

Example:

1. Malgin 7+7 = 14 pts
2. Niederreiter 7+4 = 11 pts
3. Kukan 1+7 = 8

Seems like a big physical team? Ambuhl, Kunzle, Bertschy, Nino, Miranda, Thurkauf, Herzog, Simion etc.
I would not call Ambühl or Bertschy very physical. Yes they can hit but it is not out of the ordinary. The others more so but I don't expect us to be a train running teams over. Also I can't see Künzle seeing much ice if at all - especially if Fiala and / or Hischier join.

Checking the roster, there are 9 players above 90kg including one goalie, so not a particularly heavy team (11th out of 16 according the the rosters on eliteprospects).

But it's true that this team has more grinders than usual. With Suter, Kurashev, Hofmann and Andrighetto injured plus Moy failing to impress during camp, the best possible group of forward includes guys like Herzog, Thürkauf, Miranda, Künzle or Senteler.

Report from the first practice: Primo ghiaccio a Riga per la Nazionale svizzera, che guarda al debutto di sabato – HeShootsHeScoores

The lineup:

Fora - Berni
Moser - Marti
Loeffel - Geisser
Kukan - Glauser

Herzog - Corvi - Niederreiter
Ambühl - Malgin - Senteler
Simion - Haas - Miranda
Thürkauf - Richard - Bertschy
Riat, Künzle

No surprise regarding the two forwards left out, but hard to say who would be left out on defense. My bet is on Glauser.

Richard line as expected, Niederreiter with Corvi, but it's Herzog completing the line. Haas on a brand new line too. Surprisingly, Simion is not playing with Malgin.

I wonder which center would be moved to the wing if Hischier joins? I could see Senteler dropped to make an Ambühl - Hischier - Malgin line, as Malgin is the only center to have played on the wing recently and Ambühl often played with Hischier in 2021 and 2022.

So let's hope Nico and Siegenthaler are healthy and will soon board a flight. They get a chance to overcome their dissapointment with trying to get their first medal at a WC.

Fischer said that the three New Jersey players could arrive on Monday if there are no unforeseen issues. He also confirmed that he will start the tournament with 7 defensemen and 12 forwards, and that van Pottelberghe will be cut if Schmid comes.

He also confirmed that Fiala is still training and wants to come, but it's not up to him.
