Anyways, I know the rays have made a blue print out of hobbling a bunch of no names together to make a competitive team. I know it’s not how the Sox are used to doing it. But what if it actually works this year? I know it’s only spring training and I’m probably being overly optimistic but we do have a GM who was trained in bargain basement shopping. So maybe it will work? At least enough for us to care later in the summer with the expanded payoffs?
I think we touched on this briefly in the last thread.
Every team has guys at the end of their roster who are at or close to Replacement Level players. One of the things that hurt the Red Sox last year, is that because of a lack of organizational depth, Replacement Level pitchers threw about 25% of their innings, and accounted for something like 23% of their at bats. That's insane. It's tough to compete like that.
This is one of the things the Rays do really, really well. They have enough depth on their 40 man roster that they're rarely in a position where they send non-competitive hitters to the plate or non-competitive pitchers to the mound.
I think the Red Sox are hoping that they've improved their organizational depth to the point where they will be giving far less playing time to Replacement Level players. If that happens, it theoretically should be enough to swing a significant number of wins their way.
