I agree with your thoughts on most of these issues but having been at the games and watching NFLD play on two different occasions , I would have to strongly disagree with your view that they were close . They played in the weakest division of all and their game against PEI was the worst game that I witnessed in all the games I attended . The only real team that they played was NS and they were outshot by 16 shots and never scored a goal . They were in no way close to any of the teams in Group B and probably not any of the teams in Group A . I am sure there are several skilled players on that team but it is difficult to display your talent when your team lacks depth . In our regular U18 leagues we see the same issue with skilled players playing on the lower level teams in the league . Hard to be noticed when your team is always out played and out classed but that is also an issue when players are ranked for the Q League . Many skilled players don't get ranked high because they play on the weaker teams . Much easier to get recognition when you play on the first place team as apposed to being on the last place team . Also your comment that " it is just one week of hockey " really downplays the actual quality and intensity of that week of hockey . Many of these kids played six games of the most grueling and skilled hockey they have ever played in their lives . Most kids get worn out in a regular weekend hockey tournament . Can you fathom what it is like to play six days in a row at this level of hockey . So it wasn't just a week of hockey but rather the MOST challenging thing these kids have ever done .To be fair, I was impressed by New Brunswick and Newfoundland mainly because I had higher expectations for Nova Scotia to begin with. I actually thought they had a pretty strong line-up on paper but thought they performed similarly to New Brunswick during the tournament and even NL seemed to be quite close to me.
Thought some of the highly rated NS players did poorly versus expectations and some others did very well versus expectations. I don't know that this should have a huge impact on where they are ranked on a list when trying to project their impact in 3 years at the QMJHL level, it's just one week of hockey, but it sure is going to be reflected on some of the lists at some point (rightfully so). Scouting is a process, rankings move around. Even at the end of the year, you usually have 5-10 guys that are pretty much the same level but personal preferences can end up dictating whether a guy is ranked 23rd or 34th on your list.
