I got Michkov at #4, ahead of Smith but I would not be upset at all if we snagged him with our first pick (assuming 5-7 range), even with Michkov still on the board.

Michkov >>>>>>>>>>>>> Smith

Michkov is a special player. He has a Gretzky-like vibe to his IQ.

Michkov right now is probably the most underrated Top 5 prospect I can remember. While he's still considered Top 5, it's ridiculous how low people's perception of him is.

Picking Carlsson or Fantilli over him is asinine. I don't give a f*** about his contract or Russia being at war. You have the chance you pick him that's it. Those Russians, they always end up coming over anyway. This is not the Soviet Union.

I don't buy it.

That's cause you are a poster on a message board.

It's really easy to sit here and say, pick Michkov he's the 2nd best prospect in the class.

But if you are investing a highly valuable and rare asset on a player, you want some certainty and we have none right now.

Imagine we blow a top 5 pick on Michkov and Putin keeps him in the country? That's a pretty big risk.

This isn't taking Yurov and Miro in the 20s. This is a top 5 pick in the deepest draft in recent memory.

Before making judgment, think that you know nothing about me, and how tolerant to risk I am.

I understand what you're saying, but I would still pick Michkov, even with all kodaks on me and all my money on this thing. I've taken much bigger risks than picking Michkov in a draft in my life.

Although I agree with you on picking Michkov, you've just proven WTK's point with that last sentence. There's absolutely no risk TO YOU in picking Michkov.

If I've taken bigger risks in my life, what makes you think I wouldn't take the gamble on Michkov if given the opportunity, even if the risk is on me?

Like what happen with Seth Jarvis in 2020...
Jarvis was also a beast two way forward and a better skater than Cristall.

I also like Jarvis but he might never become a ppg player.

Folks, this draft is loaded with talent, one of the best in recent memory quite similar to 2015. We need to find the player that fit our needs the most. Cristall could become a great player but I feel he does not fit a proper need and his bust potential is very high.

Caufield and Drouin are nothing alike and Cristall is more akin to Zegras than either, even if I do not think it's a great comparison. Closer to Mitch Marner stylistically, and it's easy to forget that Marner also had a tendency of overhandling and doing batshit junior stuff until he adapted to the NHL. It's a risk that he will have a similar development curve, but I have patience for players who exhibit that high end playmaking ability who can facilitate offense for everyone in the lineup.

Out of the players you named, Smith is a good alternative to Cristall but I think he'll go top 5, if not then I'd be thrilled with that. Dvorsky I'm meh on, Carlsson will be long gone, and Leonard is simply a different kind of player.
Never claimed Drouin was alike Caufield quite the opposite.

Cristall is alike Drouin was with Halifax. They both are master at stickhandling and have amazing offensive talent but their do not have a proper two way game and their skating while good is not top tier.

As for Zegras, I meant that I would like a center like him to support Suzuki as a #1B/#1A center.

How does Smith compare to Cooley as a prospect?

On one hand.. Cooley was trusted in his draft year to be a top 6 center on the WJC team while Smith was cut.

On the other hand, Smith is producing more than Cooley on the USNDTP.

I'd say there's a bit more floor on Cooley because of how competitive he is and his defensive game is actually pretty good.

Smith has the size that will help him and I do think that he's showing his offensive ability might be higher than Cooley's.

Can't wait to watch Smith at the U-18s.

Exactly.

This draft pick is very important for many teams. Waiting 3 more years (if not more) and then who knows what happen then... maybe denied access. Fantilli or Carlsson are also very important pillar for a franchise.

Smith was cut because he got sick. He didn't get a legit chance at camp due to that.
