HF Habs: 2023 NHL Draft part 2

I'd say he brings about as much intensity as he safely can. He's really smart at knowing his limits and being engaged but keeping himself safe and out of danger.
Exactly. Smith can, at times, be very Drouin-esque.

But so can Eichel, and so can Kane, and a bunch of other players.

To me, its mostly the Armia-like moments where his intensity is reminescent of @OldCraig71 after 7:30 pm.

I'd rather have a healthy Smith that cherry picks and pots 70+ points while playing 82 games a season instead of a Benson that battles hard and plays 50 games per season due to injury.
Braydon Point, Brad Marchand, Martin St-Louis, Claude Giroux where never injury prone players

It easily could be Smith who is injury prone, we don't know that

Smith very well could be plagued with injuries and Benson could be one of the smaller guys that absolutely shines despite his size.

I just think he'll end up dropping a bit more than most think. Everyone knows drafting by size/position is generally bad, but we see teams do it year after year, so I wouldn't be shocked to see guys like Dvorsky, Leonard, Reinbacher and Wood go before him.

Strbak is also a guy that I like. But I'm not quite sure what to think about him. I feel like he's a top 4 max kinda guy, but also one of those top 4's that you'd particularly like to have.

Draft sim I ended up with:

5-David Reinbacher
31-Carson Bjarnason
37-Maxim Strbak
69-Anton Wahlberg
101-Felix Unger Sorum
110-Easton Cowan
128-Juraj Pekarcik
133-Milton Oscarson
144-Alexander Rykov
165-Justin Gill
197-Albert Wikman
I thought your list going against the grain last year was brilliant. But Reinbacher @ 5, it’s heresy. This is where I jump ship. Non Possumus. Lol

Oscarson I think is well worth a late round pick for the Habs given that he's a prospect type we don't have. You can cheat a little and draft for players you might need later than you can early on.

Wahlberg from what I saw at the U-18s and read would be a great pick. Him, or Edstrom

On skating alone he has a viable path to a top 4. He's behind Willander for me but starting at 37 he's an interesting pick.

Strbak I see him as a solid all around physical top 4, would bring stability to a creative puckmoving defenseman like Hutson.

He's also a pretty strong skater and puck mover himself. Ultimately he's a guy who I think is going to be a player, but what I'm deciding is what value of pick I want to use on him.

Ignoring the top pick, we need to hit on our next pick if we actually want to contend soon. We need a legit prospect on the backend that has star potential because that's how good teams do it.

True, after that f***ing whiff on Mesar we definitely need to connect on 2 of our top 3 picks. Hopefully forwards.

Put the puck in the corner or in a small area and ask both player to get of that area with the puck and I'm confident that Benson goes out with the puck 9 times on 10
Ohhh you’re confident eh?! 9 out of 10 times….? If that were the case, Benson would go #1 or Smith would be a do not draft.

Benson looks like Karl in walking dead (Rick's son), a badass.

Yea I really wasn’t a fan of the Mesar pick. I think he could play in NHL but in a middle 6 capacity. Would have preferred in hindsight Kulich or Lambert.

And who exactly can we take at 31, that will in a couple years end up better than Hutson and Mailloux..?

Not that I consider Lane and Logan to be sure-fire-can't-miss at the NHL level (tho let's face it, Lane will make it) I'm just trying to understand what exactly will blow your socks off at 31 for D when you need more of a top 15 pick for what you're asking

Now.. here's where the Reinbacher army will come in and that's fine, dont hate him, but ive always thought they'd look at trade/UFA more to fix the glaring RD1 problem than trading for a D that will take 2-3 years maybe

Its no secret this is more of an "accelerated (but smartly) rebuild", acquiring 20 and 21 yr olds here n there, drafting 19-20 yr olds
They want to get this thing moving
So i think they 100% go Goalie at 31 or 37

And I also think there is just plain NO way they go D at 5

I was okay with the Mesar, he's got great wheels and skill but I don't see him amounting to much if anything. Really don't know how you don't take Kulich there. We really need to knock it out of the park with at least 2 picks outside our own 1st, especially when Slaf and Reinbacher aren't projected to be stars.

That's up to the scouting department, of course nobody can know from now but it seems like every team finds that stud outside their top 10 pick but we haven't. Hutson and Roy seem like the best bets but that is still yet to be determined and frankly we need more. I'm talking about like a Roope Hintz or Jason Robertson type impact players.

With prospects its hard to have consensus, people love or dislike different ones for different reasons and its all right. Personally I see alot of upside in Reinbacher, high floor, high celling and obviously you dont. Lets see how the draft pans out...

You ever heard of upside? Reinbacher and FUS are the only one with more than 2nd/3rd pairing upside

Honestly I hope the Habs can develop him into a decent 5 on 5 player and PK specialist who can contribute well enough offensively on the 3rd line (40-50 pts)

Guys Michkov is under 6 foot, uber skilled and ranked high just like Drouin was...
So ya lets just go ahead and draft another bust.

Am I doing this right?
