how deep is 23' looking@Old Navy Goat ? Those three, 2nd rounders going to be interesting ?
Right now it's very top heavy with the studs making their presence felt while most of the 23s are 3rd/4th line 5/6D like normal. The Euros with few exceptions are in juniors so the jury is still out on them.

Now saying that you have 10-15 players that would be top 5 in most classes, with 5 you can argue would be contending for 1OV. So just looking at that and seeing draft norms you can figure Rd 1 quality players through the 40s

I wonder if the Russian factor and KHL contract will cause him to fall. Conversely, the top tier C prospects like Bedard, Fantelli and Dvorsky would be pushing for top slots.

The Firkus Michigan was much more impressive as the kid did it at full speed skating out of the corner

He will be picked up by a team that is doing a long rebuild, probably in the top 5-10.

He's gonna be a perennial 100+ point guy for most of his career. I could see Fantelli possibly overtaking him but anybody drafting that high probably won't need his services for 3 or so years anyway.

There's only one question worth asking:

Who are the top Swedish centers in this draft?

Off the top of my head Bedard, Michkov, Dvorsky, Fantilli, and there's probably more I'm forgetting as well as other guys that are inevitably going to have a breakout draft year. This draft is 2003, 2015 vibes.
Ritchie, Benson to name a couple others. The WHL is stupidly stacked next year and inevitably a couple NTDP kids will rise towards the top.

I think the Habs brain trust are looking at another high pick and know whoever it is projects to a top tier C prospect so picking the Slafkovsky unicorn made sense

It's weird to read that as a guy who doesn't follow prospects. I feel that until a few months ago everyone was saying this year (2022) was a very deep draft.

It’s deep, but not a lot of high end talent.

2023 has looked for some time like it will have a collection of players that have star power beyond what 2022 offered. What 2022 had going for it was the sort of "C" tier from around 10 down potentially into the 40's that was "deep". We don't know yet how 2023 stacks up after the A (Bedard, Michkov, Fantilli) and B (Dvorsky, Benson, But, Ritchie, Carlsson) tier guys in that sort of C tier area. It could shape up like 2003 in terms of talent.

Don't forget about another home grown kid with potential to work his way into the 1st round with Gavin Mccarthy a MUCH NEEDED RHD that's super poised with the puck and plays with an edge.

Anyone have initial readings on the goalies in this draft? Any potential 1st round picks used on someone? I'm guessing it's hard to guage yet with the time they've missed.

Looking at EP, Michal Vrabal had a strong season this past year playing for both Sparta Praha Under 17 AND Under 20 teams.

Yegor Zavragin put up some nice stats playing for Montry Yugry in the MHL.

Noa Vali had a strong season for TPS Under 18 and had even better stats in his 3 games for their Under 20 team.

And you can’t forget about goalies who are second time eligible (Charlie Schenkel & Samuel Ivanov in the Soo, Gibson Homer [Chicago Steel last year, Arizona State this upcoming year]).

For goalies, I'd probably start my watchlist with the Czechs Michael Hrabal and Adam Dybal. They're both at, or better than, Vanecek's and Vladar's DY numbers in their DY-1 years. Where and how they perform this fall has piqued my interest. Hrabal's tall like Vladar, while Dybal's got that "two weeks away from the 2024 draft" going for him.

11. Brayden Yager, C, Moose Jaw (WHL)

Yager had a great season, scoring 34 goals in the WHL and playing a big role for Moose Jaw — often playing 20 minutes a night as a 16-year-old. Yager plays the game like a pro with high pace and compete in his shifts. He has the flashy skill and playmaking, but he has a direct style to his game that will translate to higher levels. Yager’s shot is also a weapon and he will be a goal-scorer versus better goalies. And before you use the “Yager bomb” line, I can assure you that joke has already gotten old. He’s not the biggest but projects to be an NHL center.

Too bad RJ will be retired when he inevitably ends up as a Sabre.

:sarcasm:

17. Will Smith, C, USNTDP (USHL)

Will Smith is a very talented player, and the top player from the USA Hockey National Team Development Program 2005 group. His skill level is quite high, showing a great ability to beat defenders one-on-one and make difficult plays with the puck. Smith can make and finish plays, showing the ability to run a power play flank. He’s not that big, and he skates well, but he isn’t a blazer. Smith does compete hard enough and doesn’t shy from getting to the net to create offense.

Combine interview question: If we draft you and you get to pick your goal song, you will go with "Gettin' Jiggy With It", right?
