Nah, pushing for playoffs next year.
Well yeah, I think they're right on the doorstep at least.

Their differential shows how far they really need to come to overtake a team like Boston in the wildcard race. But next year, with rookies they bring up, who knows?

They could be 13-16 in the lotto odds this year if not next year or even 17-20 next season.

Man, if Detroit can add an elite center via draft it seems all their pieces will have fallen into place. Wingers, dmen, goalies...now just get another guy to go with Larkin down the middle.

This is going to be the best center draft Sweden has had in a very long time.

Leo Carlsson, Otto Stenberg, and Kalle Carlsson all had great -1 seasons at the U20 level at 16/17 years old.

We had close to 6 kids go PPG or better in the WHL in their -1 season. Not sure we have even seen that before. Connor Bedard, Zach Benson, Nate Danielson, Riley Heidt, Brayden Yager, Koehn Zimmer.

Dvorsky looks like a high end talent from Slovakia.

Sale looks like a high end talent from Czechkia.

Kasper Haltunnen looked very impressive to me at the U18s for Finland.

Matthew Wood put up just about 2 PPG in the BCHL.

Oh then you have Michkov and Fantilli

There are like 5 or 6 kids in this draft that look like they would push Shane Wright out of the top 5.

I haven't seen much of Stenberg, Kalle Carlsson, Haltunen or Wood but I'm pretty high on Leo Carlsson and Adam Fantilli. I doubt we're anywhere near the Michkov or Bedard sweepstakes, but Fantilli and Carlsson look like franchise cornerstone centers in the making.

If there was ever a year to tank it would be next year. If this year and next year could have been switched that would be perfect. Still there’s a whole year left, a lot can change. 2022 was supposed to be an amazing draft too at one point.

Outside of bedard or michkov, if I had anyone I’d love to get it would be fantilli. Guy just has “it”. I’d love to have him be a red wing.

I know the fans dont want to hear it but getting a top 5 pick will be huge for the long term of the team

We have 0% chance of making the playoffs and getting pick 11 would be horrible. If I'm stevie I'm getting lucic hornqvist type guys and adding picks and prospects and give the kids a ton of ice time

With another season raymond and seider will only get better, berggren and edvinsson gain experience + a top 10 pick this season and hopefully 5 next season, cossa soon. I wouldn't see it as us regressing

Can see us with say pick 4 in 2023 and contending for a playoff spot the following season

No need to intentionally tank. Plus there are teams that are already tanking way harder.

It's very unlikely that Detroit makes the postseason next year in the east and still probably finish picking 8-12. It's just far too strong.

But look at the silver lining:

Boston
Pittsburgh
Tampa
Florida
Toronto

Are all teams that have a major roster overhaul pending or are in cap trouble within the next 1 to 3 seasons. My money is on Boston first due to poor forward depth, then Pittsburgh due to the aging Malkin, Letang and Crosby trio.

Ottawa
Montreal
Philadelphia
New Jersey

Are all teams either entering a rebuild or will remain in a perpetual rebuild for a while. I have serious doubts Detroit can tank harder than any of these guys. Ottawa won't spend to the cap. Ever. Montreal just shit the bed after blowing their one finals chance in 28 years. Philadelphia gave up Voracek AND Giroux who had gas still in the tank.

Wild cards are Buffalo and New Jersey. Maybe Columbus but I don't see them lucking into another Jones/Werenski/Panarin level core with their current crop of prospects.

If things go right for Detroit in free agency in 2022 and 2023 and guys like Berggren, Edvinsson, Soderblom and one of Johansson and Wallinder turn out then they could be a low to mid tier seed. And if they can swing a trade for a top line center or draft one somewhere then they'll be even more deadly.

This is the year you unabashedly go worst for top 3 and not look back with a second thought. We just need a top 3 pick, I won't complain though if we win 1 and get Bedard.

I dont think its against the realm of possibility wings get in the top 5

Defense I suspect will still be a challenge and as exciting as it is to see edvinsson I suspect he won't be seider 2.0 off the bat and will have some challenges at d

Mtl were alot better with st louis and now they're adding Wright and who knows if price comes back , wouldn't say it's a certainty we pass them

Devils as well with Hughes there a full season, maybe the 2nd overall pick

Sens with pinto fulltime + Sanderson and who knows who else it wouldn't be a shocker to see them ahead of us

I'm still under the belief that the 23-24 season is the year for us to get excited about

I only think Montreal, Ottawa and New Jersey pass Detroit if Detroit is flat out unable to sign anyone of significance this offseason. And if that happens then Detroit needs to beg teams for their cap dumps or be penalized for being below the cap floor.

Montreal has little cap space to improve, and Wright does not look like an NHL ready star. Even with St. Louis that wasn't a significant bump as they were still below 0.500.

Shane Pinto is a future 3rd liner and we don't know what Sanderson will be yet or what Ottawa sheds this offseason to stay on the floor.

The Devils still have some of the worst goaltending in the league. Hughes isn't an Auston Matthews or McDavid level scoring threat to outscore his team's problems.

And that'll happen imo, cant see stevie signing anyone just yet to anything more than 2 years as much as some fans want him to

We should be begging for cap dumps now since were unable to get anything of significant at the deadline lol. We can afford to take a chump or two for one season only

I can still see Wright there but we'll see, price returns who knows. Just dont see it as a sure thing we pass them

Dont sleep on the sens

Hughes was putting up like 90 pts this season, again not 100% we pass them

I don’t see us bottoming out again next year. Already middle of the pack -ish now and once we get vrana back + Edvinsson over + 1-2 good ufa signings, I see us making playoffs next year.

if we do tank though, it’s an amazing year to do so. Every one of Bedard, Yager, Dvorsky, Stenberg, Carlsson have 1C written all over them (so far). And that’s not even mentioning Michkov, etc
i just look at our team compared to boston/ caps/ and pens as the bottom teams in the playofffs and were nowhere close to there level. dont see how we make playoffs next year

Yzerman still has to spend like 20 million just to hit the floor.

There's no way this team has a shot at a top-3 pick next season unless we do something dumb like signing fourth liners to 8 million dollar a year deals. Best they can hope for is probably 10-15.

That's a silly take. Montreal had the highest payroll this year and still finished dead last. A lot can happen between free agency and the draft lottery.

You don't make a roster with the hope that injuries will give you a shot at the top pick. That's ridiculous. Also, Yzerman != Bergevin.

If Price, Weber, and Drouin were on the roster, they probably have a better record than Detroit.

The salary cap floor is around $60,200,000 so Yzerman has roughly $14,000,000 million to spend to reach the cap floor.

Goals don't have to be mutually exclusive.

Revamp the roster this summer with the intention of challenging for a playoff spot.

Then either it works and you're still in the mix as the deadline approaches, or you're still low enough in the standings to have half the roster suddenly develop equipment allergies and chase a top five pick to cap the rebuild.

But I'm definitely not slow playing this summer just because the 2023 draft class looks fantastic 13 months out. Play for the now, and you can always try to trade up later.

No days off.

Without knowing how our roster shapes up, I'd put us somewhere in the ballpark of pick #7-15. This will probably be one of our last chances at a lottery win.

Bedard is obviously the big name at the moment, and some see Michkov right there too. I'm sure there will be all sorts of discussion about drafting the risks of drafting a Russian prospect top 2 in light of current events.

I'll get a close look at Fantilli this year, but I'm not super confident he'll be available for the Wings. Charlie Stramel is I guy I'd be seriously interested in, and I really enjoyed watching Zach Benson for Winnipeg this year. Two names who could plausibly be in the mix for Detroit. Lotta people like Dvorsky. I'm sure this board will have plenty of Carlsson admirers. I think Will Smith is an underrated player who might be available in the early teens if we fall around there.

Obviously you'd never turn your nose up at a good center prospect, but I think things have come full circle to a point where I'm looking at our future on the wing and I'd really like to add some more production beyond Raymond there.

Fantili is probably my very very early number 2. Caught some Stramel with USNTDP and liked what I saw. Lots of good forwards near the top this year.

I think I'm gonna take a more focused approach this year. I lost focus quite a bit when it came to my 6-15 guys, always changing them up. So I think I'm gonna go for quality over quantity. 60 players is just unreasonable for me to rank with my schedule. I'm gonna focus on NA guys, follow the euros more casually. You all follow the euros real close and I trust you guys to give me a good picture on them.
