I don’t think it’s best shot in the class. Probably outside of the top 10. It’s good, but not great. The guy also likes to take a lot of Zadina shots from far outside of the circles. That works in junior but isn’t going to fly in the pros.

If I’m looking at who is available at #9, Barlow is probably my 5th choice or later.
let’s see the mock big dawg

I really think we should move up to 6 or 7 if Michkov is on the board. What the Red Wings need more than anything else is a game breaker, and that’s what Michkov is, and like others have said, he’s not falling past 8 unless there’s something no one else knows about.

That said, I expect Bedard, Fantilli, Carlsson, Smith, and Reinbacher to be gone by the time Detroit picks. Good chance Leonard is gone too.

I’d probably pick Dvorsky or Perrault at 9, and move up a few spots to try and snag Oliver Moore or Zach Benson with pick 12-15 in that scenario.

I’m a big fan of Moore, but it sure seems like he’ll be around by pick 12ish now, and I definitely take him over Yager, Danielson, and Ritchie.

I really like this trade idea/scenario. I happened to check the trade value chart on it the other day.

If we trade two of our 2nd round picks, the fair value should get us down to around 25th overall.
23 (NYR), 27 (Col) and 28 (Tor) could be partners… and would have motivation to be on the other end of this.

There will still be a couple very high pedigree prospects to choose from in the mid 20’s that we will have no chance at in the 40’s. All the while we would still be able to get ‘our guy’ in the early 40’s with that other pick.
Trade value chart is sorta meaningless because you have to find a trading partner. The only GM that likes to trade down from the 1st round is Kenny, and he's already traded away his pick. I really don't see any other GM wanting to trade down in the 1st round in this draft.

Someone good will be available at 9 and it could be Benson or Moore, you probably don't need to trade up for them. There is also Wood, looks like guy has character to become great NHL player, just imagine Rasmussen with higher hockey IQ and better hands.

Barlow's highlights look similar to Zadina's.

Barlow is faster and more physical though. Also didn't play on a high end CHL team like Zadina did.

I've read Barlow and Zadina a couple times mentioned together now. Barlow does not play the game like Zadina at all. They both scored a lot of goals in junior is the only thing in common between them.

Barlow scores a lot in the greasy areas, which Zadina didnt do in junior. Hes got a physical side and is a stud defensively as well. Zadina was a sniper in junior that hasnt translated. Barlow has a similar shot and a more rounded game to go with it

Sounds good! +1 vote for Team DraftTheStache!

No one said best shot in the class. Look at this highlight, it looks high end to me. Not that many players score 45+ goals in the OHL in their draft year.

Being scared to ever draft a 6'0 sniper again bc of Zadina is like being scared to ever date again because someone break your heart. Get over it. This team needs a goal scorer.

Not crazy about Wood or Colby Barlow, tbh. I’d trust Yzerman if we took either, but I have reservations.

I believe in Draper judgment after interviews. There will be plenty guys who could go either 9 or 17. I remember when we get Rasmussen it was a lot of talks about his leadership and hard work, we finally see it now, he will be very good at playoffs. And this kind of guys we need to draft , both Wood and Barlow are power forwards we should draft

I'm trying to find which podcast it was, but I believe it was NHL draft class where someone from NHL CSB that talked about how Barlow takes a lot of low percentage shots from outside of the circles. They also mentioned how he CAN get in and score goals around the homeplate area but that he needs to do it more. That's a lot of what I've seen when I watched Barlow in highlights and in a couple of games.
Pros: Loves to shoot the puck from anywhere.
Cons: Loves to shoot the puck from anywhere.

(I think it was the one with Dan Marr on April 18?)

I mean the shot I posted shows me he can wire it pretty good from distance.

Part of being a top scorer includes being able to generate a lot of shots. It is a number's game. I'm not necessarily opposed to having someone who is overly shot happy. We have not had a good shot generator in how long?

If we roughly agree that Bedard, Fantilli, Carlsson, Smith and Michkov will be gone. Then we have a tier that should have some names there for 9 but not 17:
Dvorsky, Leonard, Perreault, Benson, Reinbacher

and then another very close group: Moore, Wood, Barlow, Danielson, Yager, Willander, Sale, Sandin Pellikka, Honzek and Cristall.

What are some of your best/worst case scenario 9/17 combos?

Personally I think they're something like:
Best case: Dvorsky/Yager
Worst case: Danielson/Cristall
And I'd still be pretty happy with Danielson/Cristall

And I understand the want and agree with you there. But there's a HUGE difference between a shot generator like Barlow and a shot generator like Leonard, for example. Most of Leonard's shots are from 15 feet of the net or closer. If there was an OHL shot map I'd bet the majority of Barlow's shots are from outside of the circles. And outside of powerplay chances, shots like that don't often go even get to the net at the NHL level.

That said, I do like the player. I think he's got a good amount of skill and fairly certain NHL upside, but I don't think it's better than the other guys available at #9. I don't think he's going to score more goals in the NHL than guys like Leonard, Danielson, Dvorsky or Benson. His game isn't as greasy as a guy like Leonard or Danielson, and for a guy reported to have a power game he spends too much time shooting from outside. None of his flaws are world shattering that make me say no to him, but there isn't a single trait in his game that tops any other player at 9 for me. Shot, physicality, skating, playmaking, hockey sense, size.

You guys can keep bringing up Leonard, I’m not expecting him to be there at #9.

I don’t know what you think what his shot chart would look like is accurate. I would bet a guy who scored 46 goals this year put a decent amount of pucks on net in prime areas.

Give me the double D! Dvorsky+Danielson

Barlow is classic case of player who matures early, like Lafreniere and Zadina. All had adult physique at age of 18 and played against players who mostly had the physique of a teenagers.

At the U18 Worlds Barlow got to play against kids who has played against men or at least participated in men's team practices, and suddenly he didn't look so good. 3+1 in 6 games and he played 4 games in the 1st line and 2 games in the 2nd line. 9th best scorer in Team Canada and played in the top-6 role. Canada had 8-0, 8-3 and 7-3 blow out victories, Barlow had 1 goal and 1 assist in those games and both in same game against Czechia. 2 goals against Slovakia, 1 in preliminary round game and 1 in bronze medal game.

Barlow #9, would be mistake.

I like other options better at 9. But I don't know that 4 points in a 6-game tournament is a red flag.

Might be fair to point out he had an underwhelming U18s, and I would probably agree.

I think guys already being physically developed at 17/18 has cut both ways as far as prospects go.
