Still 5 months or so to go, but it’s never too early to discuss potential import picks. Who could be selected from your country or countries you follow?

I’ll start with Germany:
05 F Linus Brandl
05 F Kevin Bicker
05 F Julius Sumpf
05 F Timo Ruckdäschel
05 D Edwin Tropmann
05 D Paul Mayer
05 D Lua Niehus
05 D Norwin Panocha

I think fewer Slovaks will go through the CHL draft this year. The biggest favourites from my point of view are Tomas Pobezal (late 06) and Ondrej Maruna (06). Other candidates include Lubos Stahon (05), Frantisek Dej (05), Juraj Pekarcik (05) and Michal Sobotka (late 05).

Reinbacher was already selected by Sarnia last year and I can’t see him moving back to junior anyway.

Didn’t know that. appreciate the info.

Agreed - once you play against men and thrive for the most part you don’t want to take a step back if you will and play against your age group.

Bruno Idzan (CRO) and Michael Brantsegg-Nygard (NOR) (unlikely to come over I would think) are 2 interesting names for me.

Then it would be fun for Pobezal to come over from Slovakia, Adam Jecho (CZE), Stian Solberg (NOR), David Jiricek’s brother but likely won’t come over (Adam), among others from the 2024 draft/late birthdays

Lets hope, it will be better as last year:

Sykora, Kukumberg, Ciernik, Sotek, Dvorsky - still in Europe
Misiak - USHL (why that?)
Molnar - only because his incident, anyway he will be maybe still in Slovakia. I repeat - maybe.
Zöld and Ridzon - after few weeks back to Slovakia

That means only Honzek made his name. Molnar is ok, but not spectacular and Chromiak too.

All good candidates, but I expect only a small number being drafted, if any. Just not much success in recent years. Luca Hauf is doing alright, in a situation where he is playing on a terrible team with not much competition. Everyone else from the last few years has returned home by now (Hafenrichter, Elias, Bettahar) or is not playing due to injury (Hänelt) or competition (Del Monte), and the latter was not selected through the import draft.

Some other names that might get some consideration:
05 F Paul Vinzens
06 F Max Herzog
06 F Tim Schütz (He is playing in NA this season, but I think he would still have to be selected in the Import Draft)
06 F Tobias Schwarz
06 D Manuel Schams

Obviously the 06s are even less likely, since Germans usually don't make the move in their draft year.

I am wondering if maybe a goalie like Valentin Ankirchner or Nico Pertuch might go this route and get selected.

Misiak - USHL (why that?)

1#1

Saginaw returned both its imports at the start of the season and thier GM said Misiak was a play for next season. Im guessing hw webt USHL instead of OHL after Mintyukov was traded was to avoid being drafted under the CHL-NHL agreement to keep his options open for next season with the OHL being the most likely destination.

Roughly a third of the players that actually went to the CHL (not counting guys like Seider or Stützle who never played in these leagues), did pretty well.
However, this is mostly owed to a very successfuls stretch between 2008 and 2016.

Roughly a third of the players that actually went to the CHL (not counting guys like Seider or Stützle who never played in these leagues), did pretty well.
However, this is mostly owed to a very successfuls stretch between 2008 and 2016.
Kind of confused as to what you’re considering a success. There are quite a few players on that list that I would say had a successful time overseas, including Proske and Hauf as the most recent two.

Proske and Dolak were two I was going back and forth on. Denis Reul was another.
Ultimately I rated guys who played more games and stuck around longer (e.g. Kislinger, Uvira) more of a success than somebody like Proske who only played a single very good, but not great season.
The only player I considered to be a success despite only playing one season was Yannic Seidenberg, because that was a great season.

Hauf is too early to tell. He is doing alright, but it's not enough for me, yet.

One thing I'm seeing in your list is that the QMJHL seems to be a better league for the German kids. Of the guys that played in the Q, only Aberg (who was a redraft by a team with a low pick), Eckl, Sedlar, Krammer, Ritter, and Fauser were not successful to some extent.

After my previous post I was curious and took a look back at the history of Germans in the Import draft.
Here is a list of all Germans selected in the Import Draft (I have bolded the ones I would consider to have had successful CHL stints):

Roughly a third of the players that actually went to the CHL (not counting guys like Seider or Stützle who never played in these leagues), did pretty well.
However, this is mostly owed to a very successfuls stretch between 2008 and 2016.
The 2008-2016 corridor also seems to line up pretty well with the sort of 'dark age' of junior development in Germany. If memory serves, there was a big push starting in the 2015-2016 season (was a regular reader of Eishockeynews at the time and found the policy changes so interesting) to revamp the junior system and the teams being given some kind of star rating based on how good their system was.

No surprise that the quality of successful imports has gone down, as guys in those tiers are now getting opportunities to play pro in Germany sooner where in 2008-2016 their horizons weren't nearly as good at home. Considering Germany only produces a handful of NHL prospects each year, it makes sense that most of them would be scooped up and held onto by German teams.

So while I love when my hometown Attack roll the dice on German players, I'm not expecting a steady stream of them going forward.

Stanislav Gron (late 05), Andrej Fabian Licko (06) and Adam Cedzo (05) are the other three candidates who could theoretically be interested in following the CHL career route. The biggest favourites are still Tomas Pobezal and Ondrej Maruna. Others, it's hard to say.

Does the stupid decision to ban Russians and Belarusians from the chl import still work ?

Giving this a little pre-U18s bump.

Anyone we should pay close attention to at the tournament in terms of potential CHL import picks?

For Switzerland definitely all the 06 born players except Kirsch who is already committed to the NCAA.

So basically:

Daniil Ustinkov: Puck moving defender with great puck skills and edge work. Can beat opponents with his stickhandling at fairly high speed. Very calm and effective with his decision making in his own zone. Needs to improve his shot though to become a consistent offensive threat at the international level. Already has some experience in the highest tier Swiss league and has not looked out of place there. Has signaled interest to move to NA.

Jamiro Reber: Smooth skating W/C with great vision and a responsible and mature two way game. His all around skating technique and his motor usually impressed me the most when I saw him play. Could take more risks offensively as he opts for the high percentage play maybe a little bit too much. Needs to improve his shot as well. He has decent accuracy but needs to improve his shooting power and release. I am not sure if he is open to the idea of going abroad though.

Leon Muggli: Haven't seen him play a ton lately but I remember him as a decent all around dman that is responsible in his own zone and still has a slight offensive touch. Coaches also seem very high on his character and work ethic. Was the captain of the U17 national team this year.

If I was a CHL scout, I would look at any of those guys before the 05s. The Meier Twins are probably the most interesting players among those though. I actually think Rafael Meier might transition better to the north american game than Simon. He has good size and hands and is actually a pretty competent goal scorer. Was noticable a few times at last years Ivan Hlinka memorial. Simon has some talent as well, but kind of fits in the mold of the undersized playmaking center that oftentimes struggles to be effective in the CHL. Jonas Taibel is a good recent example of this phenomenon.

Thank you, appreciate the detailed write-up! Where has Ustinkov signaled interest? I keep reading about it on here and on Twitter but don’t know where it originated.

I probably should have clarified that there have only been rumors of potential interest to move to the CHL. I don't have any better sources than the ones you already mentioned in that regard.
