I want to fast forward to tonight and hear the news that we are f***ing trading up for Michkov.

Ideally he just falls to 8, but yeah. how many opportunities do you get to get a bonafide star almost guaranteed?

If his downside is a star player, which is what the numbers indicate, then what’s his upside or even his median outcome?

I’m easily giving up #8, next years pick, and another asset.

I’d say our odds of getting Michkov are 10%, slightly better odds than winning the draft lottery.

I’m ready to be heart broken again!

Not to mention, any other year he would be a clearcut #1 and if he wasn't Russian, he'd be going #2 this year quite easily. You never really get the chance to draft what you can preconceive to be a future star and franchise player at or near #8, without significant development time, but MM is already that. Usually teams only have that luxury in the top-two, maaaaaaybe top-three. Too much upside and value to pass up, even if we have to trade up.

Elliotte may be simply speculating for clicks and engagement...

If not, I seriously hope GMBM is smart enough to call their bluff. Paying a king's ransom is counter productive. There are great potential alternatives, as we have been discussing, and the lost opportunity cost could really hurt the Caps, and maybe even negatively impact how long Ovi plays.

I simply don’t care about pick #40 or any prospect if it means they get Michkov. I might even trade a protected first for next year. If they’re bad enough that the first round pick matters next year then they can recoup draft picks by trading guys away at the deadline or next summer.

There’s not a single player they’ve picked since Backstrom or maybe Carlson that has the type of ability to change a franchise like Michkov. We have enough middle six forward or second pair defensemen prospects, go get the guy they normally wouldn’t be able to get unless they were the worst team in the NHL.

I’d do 8, 40, and Chelsey if michkov is available for us to move up.

Karlsson, Erik (NMC)
2023 1st round pick ( SJS)
In
Mantha, Anthony
Kuznetsov, Evgeny (M-NTC)
2023 1st round pick ( WSH)
Add 2023 2nd?
2024 1st round pick ( WSH)
2024 3rd round pick ( MIN)
2025 2nd round pick ( BOS)
2025 2nd round pick ( WSH)
No not at all this doesn’t move the needle. We’d blow any capital we’d have to land players to use the additional cap space. Not to mention I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Karlsson has his best year in years once he was the guy alone again after they moved burns.

Edit: missed us getting SJs 1st to draft michkov makes it closer but still think it does to much damage to the ability to bring in addition pieces to fill holes in the top 6.

I’ve seen worse….immediate boost to the team plus MM….leaves a hole at C.

Well Caps are going in 2 directions at the same time. This trade embodies that path. Old players energized. 80% chance at Superstar/Star in the future. Besides the FRP's and the 2nd this year possibly who cares. I take that chance everyday.

Someone please remind me: When a trade is made during the draft that involves picks in that year's draft, do they wait to announce the trade until one of the teams involved are about to pick? Or do they announce it when the trade happens (even if neither team is about to pick)?

Basically, if WSH or another team ends up trading up for #4 or #5, will it only get announced just before the #4 or #5 team goes on the clock? (I get that many of these trades are made right before one of the involved teams goes on the clock, but yeah.)

In hockey, they usually announce beforehand, unlike basketball.

Bettman will get to the podium and say, “We have a trade to announce. Washington has acquired Team A’s first round pick; Washington is now on the clock.”

Would it be worth it to retain some of Karlssons cap hit in a three way trade to move up ? Say we retained 2.5 mil it’s for four more years I believe. SJ could retain 2 mil and now Karlsson has a deal for 7 mil a year. A lot easier to get bigger assets for SJ in that case.

To me only SJ and maybe Arizona are threats on michkov.

Chi Bedard
Ana Fantilli
Cbus Carlsson
SJ ???
Habs Reinbacher
AZ ???
Philly Leonard
Why no Habs and Flyers? both teams are rebuilding and can easily wait 3 years.

I'm not feeling to confident, very little chance 4 teams will pass on Michkov. I'm all in on a trade.
