How is the risk (almost) as high as the possible reward? We are talking about the next Ovechkin while people keeps pushing how the next Backstrom and whoever you want to compare Fantilli to are worth more. That’s ridiculous. Otherwise, in the last few weeks three Russian top picks in Svechkov, Chibrikov and Miro have decided to come to NA...while some wannabe experts are talking about some risks that can't even be proven with an example.

Caps should trade for Michkov if he is available after the first 4 and convince him to only want to go to them (no problem with Ovi). This is a situation similar to Jagr and the Pens. A gift, plain and simple.
He's like 1/3 of Ovie's size and doesn’t play anything like the same brand of hockey. He might become a great player, but next Ovechkin? no

From everything I have read, the words they use to describe him are potential to be an all time great Russian, not breaking goal records like Ovi is. The player comps that I have seen are Kucherov and Federov, I will take that

So potentially “a great player”…as Cali said.

Tagline with whatever you want but if he's the next Kucherov that's the cornerstone of a competitive franchise for a decade. I'll trade a "all time great" player for the success that Tampa has had with "a great player". Sign me up.

I tend to agree that if slides out of the top 4, the Caps should move up for him. Going from 8 to 5 should not cost a fortune.

Kuzy +8 for 4 or 5, that solves two big problems and we have centers in Hershey who deserve a chance.

Are we? Michkov has skills but not really similar to Ovi

FWIW, the Caps had largely the same or better success than Tampa until 3 years ago. Sure the Lightning got a bit farther in the playoffs from time to time but this vintage of Bolts won precisely one more Stanley Cups than the Ovi-era Caps.

Habs fan here. On a tv sport show someone said Habs might be affraid to pick Michkov. It is very possible he will be availabvle at #8 and your team have a special connection with russians (Ovy). Would it be a shame for other treams to not picking Mich when he was available? Are they too affraid to never have him because of the cold war and the mysterious events around Mich?

Do you think Caps should trade to be sure to draft him or just wait if by miracle he's still available?

He's risky, I heard recently he's actually 30 years old and spends his summers in North Korea eating the homeless.

I'd pass if I were you guys.:sarcasm:

I just don’t see Montreal, Arizona, or Philly taking him. I don’t think Montreal can take another wing that high, Bill Armstrong wants to draft Michov for his replacement, or Philly can resist taking an American. So why trade up if he gets by SJ?

Michkov could be the cornerstone by which they build the future Caps. Go get him and trade up. (I know they won’t but still)

Arizona has two first round picks. I could totally see them doing it.

Possibly, but with the 6th pick they’ve got the opportunity to draft someone on Cooley’s timeline, then they can take a big swing with Ottawas pick.

No trade if he falls let it happen naturally if it does.

Ive said it before, but getting Michkov would be absolute steal from this draft and a very possibly the transition superstar-player for the era after Ovie in a way that we dont have to do a scorched earth kind of rebuild. It could accelerate the rebuild/retool with years.

Yeah, he has risk factors. But he also has the kind of upside you normally can only find from a top1-3 picks. For us, thats a perfect fit. Without whats happening in Russia, he is consensus 2nd overall in a very top heavy draft. Without the risk factors we wouldnt be able to even discuss the opporunity about him being avaivable for us.

So im very comfortable using an asset to secure Michkov if we have any chance to do so.

I concur. They should be willing to move an asset for this player if he is still available at 5 or 6.

We are going to get a really good player at 8. One of Leonard, Benson or Dvorsky. I feel like any of these players could have franchise altering capabilities.

If Michkov slips, there will be a lot of competition to move up to get him. My guess is the cost would be prohibitive. Most likely includes next years first, which defeats the purpose of our rebuild/retool.

Miro will be in Hershey, at worst, next year. Imagine him playing with Dvorsky?

I have not been one to care all that much about Ovechkins goal record. But, MM is the only one on this list that cannot affect that in any way.

I’d much rather stay at 8.

None of those players from what I’ve read are franchise changing players. Good players? Sure. Potential franchise players? No.

Miro got out of the last year of his contract so I don’t doubt he could come over earlier with some convincing.
Yes and not like he is ready to play in nhl yet anyway. Maybe skill wise yea but size wise is a totally different story. Picking him does nothing for an organization with short window. This is a better pick for a rebuilding organization.

This team isn’t winning sh*t anytime soon. There are no magical moves they can make this summer to make them a Stanley Cup contender again. Make the playoffs? Sure. Win the Cup? Unlikely. Get Ovi his goal record but let’s be honest on where this team is headed. As long as they have Backstrom’s contract on the books (and he isn’t going anywhere) their hands are tied to a degree.

BMac has already said they want to make the pick so I don’t see them trading the 8th spot. Besides maybe Reinbacher, Fantelli, and Bedard…it’s hard seeing any player in the top 10 playing in the NHL next year. This pick is for the future no matter who they take so why not get a guy you could potentially build your future forward group around?
