Prospect Info: [2023 - 69th] Jacob Fowler (NCAA - Boston College)

If Fowler burn a year and sucks the next two in the AHL, he's going to make less in his first post ECL contract than he did the previous 2 seasons... :sarcasm:

I never understand why the kids don't try to negociate a beefy ATO (no cap, unlike ELC) instead of burning a year more often.

What are the rules? If he plays 1 minute in the 3rd when we’re up by 3 does he burn a year? If so I don’t see what the big hurdle is.

Had a debate other day. Is it better to get a lot of shots on net or a few but good scoring chance?

I went with a lot of shots because chance for rebounds, deflection and mistakes by goalie. I find teams make a lot of turnovers also passing puck around to get perfect scoring chance. Buddy said many shots keep goalie sharp. A few shots he be colder. Tougher for him to defend against 15 good shots than 40 shots.

You as a goalie, you find a lot of perimeter shots help keep you sharp. Or is a few shots but from high danger area?
Lots of shots on shit team is preferable for me for same reasons you mentioned. But honestly like WTK said being able to shut the door when facing little action is a skill in and of itself. Highly underrated and normally those circumstances can make good goalies look like ass. Speaks volumes on Fowler's mental game

Oh. So what’s the hold up? Can’t play in Laval?

If he burn a year, then he can't go to Laval.

Since he is a goalie and goalie tend to have a slower development curve than skater, the Habs probably prefer to sign him to an ATO for 2024-25 and have his ELC kicking in for 2025-26 (he can sign now, it just start next year).

Yes, he can sign an ATO (amateur try out) and play for Laval. He can also sign an ELC with a 2025-26 start date - kicks in next year.

He probably wants to sign the ELC (effective immediately), because it would burn the year.

It doesn’t affect accrued years for UFA or arbitration eligibility. He has to actually play for those.

Habs might prefer it. Yet...if he doesn't want to? I see no advantage to keep him to BC. And see no advantage to play hard ball with him and lose him for nothing if he doesn't sign after year 3.

If we assume the situation is between this or that. Then they're just going to burn a year, it's not like they have been shy about doing that in the past. If Fowler want to gamble on himself it's fine, but that said, it's a (more) risky strategy for a goalie to burn a year.

Is there any real concern about him trying to get to UFA like we've seen in the past with a few NCAA players?

No. I don’t think so. I'm not concerned about that at all. It's probably better to sign him this year then just let him practice with the Habs. He doesn't need a game.

We have Monty & Dobes in Montreal, and Primeau & Hughes in Laval. He probably wants to know where they think he'd fit in this year, and I'm sure he wants NHL experience.

Jake Oettinger played 3 years for Boston University. Ryan Miller played 3 years for Michigan State University. It's not unheard of for goalies to over-cook in NCAA.

To be fair in those two scenarios who the teams had as starters probably played a role.

2000-2001, Miller decides to play a 3rd year for MSU
2000-2001, Dominik Hasek wins the vezina for the sabres, first round pick Martin Biron is knocking at the door for a spot too.

2017-2018, Oettinger has a down year, .915 with BU
2017-2017, Ben Bishop finishes #2 in vezina voting

On the other hand Montreal have a starter who's a .899% and no future goalie stud in sight. If he's any confident in his abilities I'm sure he thinks he can come in and steal the starter job within a year.
