Could be an interesting option for the Comets. Know nothing about him, but decent numbers in the WHL suggests like he could develop into a good AHL forward.
Connor put up 14 less points than Parent in both of their last year in Jrs; Parent 106/65GP and McClennon 92/64GP
In the playoffs in their final seasons Parent was a 2Pt/game player in 11GP while McClennon was 4 pts over 1Pt /game in 19GP or 1.21/game.
Not a drastic difference, but a concern must be aired here. Chicago is also a cellar dweller, last in the Central with 23 Pts/29 GP. Utica holds the same slot in the North, 24 Pts/27 GP.
The Wolves are an independent team, no formal NHL affiliation. They are not concerned with salaries and have signed some well known AHL players. They should be better than they are. They will release nonproductive players and find others. Thus, McClennon with 1 Pt in 7 GP was sent walking.
Based upon what Utica has playing in Adirondack I don't think MacKinnon will see Connor as an improvement. My thoughts are with a coach who only carries 1 extra player up front and 1 on the back end, he's not likely to be interested either.
That's nuts for a team in their position. Extending a player like this a PTO hurts nothing. If he pans out, you've picked up something better than what you have available. If not you simply release him.
Like you, I have no say in the manner. I've made player suggestions since July and none of them were signed. LOL
All of the management's kids are playing, 2 now in Utica and 1 who's been up and down. That's probably what their plan was.

Even a PTO or an AHL deal can’t hurt I would imagine. Send him down to Adirondack if he can’t cut it at the AHL level, maybe you can develop a useful AHL forward while he still has years till he hits his AHL veteran status.
Personally thought the Wolves would be more successful as an independent team. Seems like that has backfired but I wonder for a guy like McClennon if they prioritized winning over development and it hurt him.

The Wolves were doomed for failure, there isn’t enough talent available in free agency willing to sign with a team that offers no chance of a NHL call-up.

We might have gone for some of this guys and they preferred living somewhere else playing for a different organization.
I’ve already mourned our crap off-season FA, in terms of undrafted players but I can only hope they do better next time.
What’s killing Utica is we don’t have many available forward prospects for it and we need to do better with undrafted FAs. (2022 was good with Parent, Halonen and Poulter.)
It’s not like a bunch of teams were signing amazing UFAs for their AHL team while we aren’t. (And teams like Washington, Boston, NYR, Toronto, etc get the pick of the litter.)

The Wolves are finding out the hard way that an independent team in the AHL is destined for failure. The AHL development rule (i.e. veteran limit) makes it very difficult to put a competitive team on the ice without some help from a NHL team loaning them players. They hit some homeruns with their vet signings like Rocco Grimaldi and Chris Terry but they also struck out with others like Cory Conacher.
But what they are missing is a group of young, talented prospects who are all under NHL contracts with other teams. The talent pool for that 20 - 24 year old free agent group of hockey players is thin, I'm sure the Wolves GM has been working the phones trying to get NHL teams to loan them a player or two but why would a NHL GM want to do that. The Wolves best bet is to kiss and make up with the Canes in hopes for a few loans before the season totally gets away from them.

I see there was 0 interest in tonight's Comets game.
Just as well the results were the same.
Took a 1 goal lead into the final 6 minutes, gave up the tie goal, Dowling all alone in OT avoids the goalie's stick check, moves around him to an open net, and missed the goal, lost in a shootout 2 goals to 0.
Now they are winless in 7 straight games.
All 3 Comets goals by D-men and the 1st 2 were PPGs in the 1st period:
Wotherspoon
Foote
Vukojevic to put the Comets up by 1, 3-2. He did it by shooting the puck and following his shot and putting the puck into the open net. The forwards watched this keeper put rebounds right back into the shooting lanes all night long and never got to 1 of them.
Wotherspoon (4) from Dowling (10) and Parent (14)
Foote (2) from Durandeau (5)-(2) as a Comet
Vukojevic (1) from Durandeau (6)-(3) as a Comet
SOG:
LAV - 26

Play the same team at 3pm on Sunday.
*At least the parents won.
See Ruff had complete confidence in Clarke. Scratched him and played 11F including Tierney and 7D.
Trailed 2-1 after 2 and then scored all 3 in the 3rd including an ENG.
Holtz and Nemec each with a G and an A for 2-pt nights.
McCloud stays hot.
Tierney got his 2nd point in 16 GP.
Quiet night for Jack, Jesper, and Luke.
Washington lost and the Devils slide ahead of Philly, Pitt, and Wash. Trail the Isles by 2 with a game in hand. Only 4 behind 2nd place Canes with 2 games in hand.
What a quagmire the Metro is in. The Pacific is much in the same.

I was going to post that judging by the boxscore it was another not so good night for Schmid. He's been a disappointment this year , although he is still very young and has time to get back on track. If we had the Schmid from last season the Devils are probably behind the Rangers by a few points in the standings. We just need average goaltending to have a somewhat drastic improvement in goal. Daws might keep Schmid down their for awhile if he can continue his good play at the NHL level. It's only been 2 games so it's too early to judge his play.
!st period:
Laval scored first at 2:10. Another early goal surrendered by a Comets team that comes out flat every game and most preiods.
This one was a deplorable turnover by Foote. He is moving towards the blue line with the puck. 2 Rocket players are in the way. His best bet was to dump it out to one board side or the other. Nope he decides to put the puck between the 2 Laval forwards, 1 of whom blocks it, the puck and the other Rocket blow past him and proceeds to the goal front and scores. Schmid can't be faulted, but his save effort was questionable.
Comets score 2+ minutes later on the PP. It was their 8th PPG in the past 6 games. They still entered the game with the #32 PP in the AHL. They would go 1/6 on the night so, I don't think their position will change.*
The period ended 1-1 with Laval holding the edge in SOG at 12-9.
2nd period
Once again with a s**t start to a period, Laval scored the go ahead goal at :38 seconds. It was a truly sad goal. Schmid, taking his lead from Vitek, surrendered the goal on a wrist shot from the point, unscreened, down on his knees in the middle of the crease and made no move to stop the shot. The teams were playing 4 on 4, which for the Comets always looks like they are on the PK.
2-1 Laval
At 15:26 of the period Engaras breaks in with Laberge 2 on 1. Engaras appears to be attacking the keepers stick side. As the keeper adjusts, Engaras goes tape to tape to Laberge who buries it.
2-2
At 17:14 the Comets go back on the PP. They have problems setting up, but at 19:14 Schmelzer drives down the middle with possession 1 on 1 and tries a shot from between the bottom of the circles. It's into the feet of the defender, back into Schmelzer's feet, and he gathers it outside the defender, whom he passes, and wires it off the post and in. A complete individual effort. The goal comes at 19:14 so not a PP goal.
The period ends with the Comets on top 3-2.
SOG:
17-5 Utica.
3rd period
The Comets enter the 3rd period with a 1-goal lead. It would be the 3rd game in a row that the Comets blow a 3rd period 1-goal lead and end up in OT.
This one was another team blunder. Vukojevic takes the puck into the Laval end and a makes a beeline to the net. He did this on Friday and scored on his own rebound. So far no problem. He takes a shot. It is rebounded past him as he is tied up with a defender. Nobody had covered for him as he took the puck deep. Laval came back the other way and scored to even things up once again.
3-3
Period ends and it's OT.
Comets spent the entire OT playing defense. They gained offensive zone possession for one little flurry. Fitzgerald took a shot at 2:58 and Criscuolo was stopped at 3:05 on the rebound. That was their 5 minute 3 on 3 effort.
Shootout time
3rd shootout in the last 3 games.
After havin gone 2nd in the last 2 games Dineen changed things up and the Comets elected to go first.
Round 1
Durandeau was first and took the puck to the net front and bobbled the puck on his deke effort and slameed it into the pads.
Philippe Maillet scores on a short shot.
Round 2
Dowling tkaes the puck to the net front, makes 2 moves and his shot is padded away.
Brandon Gignac (ex NJ property) buries a wrister.
Laval wins 3-2
Vs Laval in the 2-game set the Comets lost both games 4-3 in a shootout and Schmid surrendered 4 goals on 5 attempts. His busted stick after the 2nd tonight simply expressed his frustration, which is shared by much of the fan base.. He has played 4 games in a row and lost all 4 (3 in shootouts). Frankly. he has not looked sharp in any of them. He has made several great saves and at the same time had all kinds of problems on shots that were not anywhere near as difficult.
* The PP remains dead last although their 13.3% is threatening to overtake Abbtsford's 13.6%. They went 0-4 today, but they won their shootout with Coachella 6-5.
The Comets are now winless in their last 8 games and have moved 5 points deep in the cellar.
Some of Logan Cooley's favorite hockey memories were forged at the Rostraver Ice Garden in Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania. In most of those memories, his older

Riley played his last year of hockey in 2019-20 and is now finishing up a finance degree at Penn State. Eric was originally slated to play for the AHL’s Utica Comets this season but he shifted gears and elected to “get on with my life.” He recently moved to north Scottsdale and is working as a trauma medical sales associate for DePuy Synthes, the Orthopaedics Company of Johnson & Johnson.
Ryan Fitzgerald did pick up his first point today in his 12th game of the season for Utica.
So congrats there.
Hirano did play 4 games in Utica but went scoreless. Not being related to any GMs we know meant he got sent to the ECHL, where he’s one of the lead scorers for the most thrilling, dominant team the North Division of the ECHL has ever witnessed… your Adirondack Thunnnnddderrrrrr!
Comets lose Willman, Bowers, and Foote to the Devils. Checking the 3 against the Devils roster and both Willman and Bowers make 12 forwards unless Smith goes up front. If so, Foote goes in and one of Willman or Bowers watches from the PB.
Comets play in Laval tomorrow and will have Russo and 2 LD on the right side. My bet is Wotherspoon and Vukojevic. That leaves Misyul, Hatakka , and Vilen on the left. Felix has been called up and likely sits, but who knows what goes on in Dineen's little brain.
The forwards are:
- Schmelzer, Criscuolo, Engaras, Dowling in the middle
- Clarke, Stillman are the only to forwards who shoot right, Halonen will join them
- 4 of Gambardella, Laberge, Parent, Durandeau, Fitzgerald play the left side and 1 goes to the right. Gambardella, Parent, and Laberge have all done it, but none were actually good there. MY guess is Parent.
Isley has been recalled , but he's a LW as well.
After 4 starts and 4 losses maybe Poulter gets the call. The Comets go again on Friday with a
5 o'clock on Saturday and then a 1 o'clock on Monday. Poulter will definitely get some work somewhere. If NJ wants to drive Schmid into the ground he'd go wed, Fri, Monday.
I'd go:
Poulter
Schmid
Poulter
Schmid
I get naming Schmid #1, but reason should be employed along the way.
Both teams are operating with skeleton crews, but I like Jersy's cahnces a lot better than Utica's.

The organization just wasn’t prepared for this many key injuries. I’m not sure they could be but they have too many prospects in college and Europe. That’s hampering Utica.
Every TV TO an army of young skaters with shovelers clear the whole ice surface.
Poulter 2 beauties.
Parent steals from behind and goes in on a semi-breakaway and it's wide.
Wotherspoon turns it over behind the net.
Centered.
Rocket uncovered. Roy fires it home.
Sorry, Poulter. You know we don't pick up guys near the netfront.
We're tied.
Comets of late have led at many times and for the most part haven't trailed a lot, but the 3rd period has seen them blow the lead late.
Do nothing in OT.
Get beat in the Shootout inn which they point blank cannot score!
1 goal in the last 3 shootouts and the 1st went 8 rounds.
