What AHL'ers are you talking about because I don't remember that.
There were times where guys like Hudon and Foudy were playing on top 2 lines. Also a guy like Malgin was playing on 2nd or 1st line. In the playoffs they had no choice but to put Eller on 2nd line when JTC wasn’t performing. Eller is not an AHLer but he has no business being anywhere near playing 2C. We can’t think guys like RyJo and Drouin won’t be upgrades

Hudon and Foudy never sniffed top line minutes man and Eller never had 2nd line minutes. Ever.

Yes they did. MacKinnon, Lehkonen, Nichushkin, ERod all missed some time with injuries. There was a point in the season where the Avs roster was the Eagles, and I think the later part of the Seattle series they moved Eller to play 2C because JTC was getting killed there

This was one of the GDTs where Foudy played 2nd line and the things weren’t even that bad at that time. It got much worse later….

Lehkonen - Rantanen - Nichushkin
Newhook - Rodrigues - Foudy
Cogliano - Compher - O'Connor
Hunt - Meyers - Hudon

Girard - Makar
Toews - Johnson
Hunt part deux - Englund

Georgiev
Mojo Jojo

Not a hot take when it's true.

Of the guys they are replacing (JTC, Rodriques, Newhook) only JTC averages more than .3 penalties a game (.35) during his career.

RyJo averages .61 penalties a game.
Wood, 1.05 per game.
Colton, .47 per game.

I don't think it's a stretch to say the Avs will be on the PK a couple more times per game, and If they're taking more penalties each game, it's a pretty safe bet they will be on the PP less.

I guess we'll find out. I sure hope that isn't the case, but I doubt Bednar is gonna be able to coach those three to take significantly less penalties than they normally have.
It’s a strategy to get more PPs I see what they’re doing, trying to get more game management/makeup calls. :sarcasm:

Drouin is replacing ERod and RyJo is replacing Compher.

The production between Drouin and ERod might not be a huge difference, but ERod is a much better player in all areas except passing the puck. He actually plays a bit physical, plays defense and shoots the puck. I'm not the biggest ERod fan around, but it seems pretty logical to me that you could make a case for ERod being the better player.

Now RyJo and Compher is an interesting one. Compher had his best season as a pro last year... and RyJo arguably had his worst. If they play exactly like last season, then Compher is clearly better. If they both play to capabilities, RyJo is clearly better.

To me, it isn't black and white on them being upgrades.

There is a lot of hope springs eternal going on, and a lot of certainty it will all fail. All the players the Avs brought in are high risk/reward guys. It could go fantastically and everyone succeeds right away... or it could complete crash and burn. If the Avs just get last year's versions of Drouin, RyJo, Colton, and Wood... the Avs will be more of a wild card team, maybe fighting for the playoffs. If all 3 play to their peak, the Avs are a far deeper team with some actual center depth, which should push them towards the top of the West. It could fall in either camp and it wouldn't at all be shocking. Odds are that it'll be a mixed bag... but we won't really know until the season is well underway.

Drouin over ERod could be an upgrade if Drouin can score 50 points which is possible. Remains to be seen.

RyJo over JTC is most likely an upgrade

Colton over Eller at 3C is definitely an upgrade

Wood over Newhook is also an upgrade. About same point production but Wood brings size and physicality.

I just don't see the absolutes here. If they all play to capabilities, sure... but that is far from a given. The only guy here who had a good season last year was Colton, and his was a step down from his previous season... and he really didn't play center last year. Possible there are pains there.

I keep seeing the Avalanche and Kane are linked. That would do wonders.
Every year the Avs are linked to the big name, and every year it doesn't happen.

Gotta trust the Avs pro scouts. They’ve been right more times than they’ve been wrong

I really hope we get a motivated and healthy RyJo as he would make a world of difference. The guy though that I feel has a real chance to take a step and help the Avs a lot over last year is Colton. His style of play should fit perfectly here. He's got more talent than he's shown so far in the NHL, especially in his playmaking ability. If RyJo struggles, it wouldn't shock me to see Colton get a run and really do well in the role. I also think he's got a real chance to help the 2nd PP unit a bunch. His shot is a weapon. People are going to be a big fan of him.

Colton over Eller is our biggest upgrade of the off-season and it continuously gets failed to be mentioned in regards to the upgrades made to this roster. It is so clearly a massive upgrade for the bottom six provided Colton stays there all season.

After Nuke left the team in the post season, we had Lars Eller playing in our top 6. The fact he was only added at the deadline doesn’t change anything. He was our penciled in 3C in the playoffs.

RyJo/Compher and Drouin/Erod can be argued either way. Colton/Eller cannot, it is Colton AINEC.
