That's an interesting question. Even if he were waived today, would we even be able to send him down tomorrow? The freeze is technically midnight tonight.

I’m guessing that putting him on waivers today with the intention of assigning him to the AHL would be fine. TSN indicates waivers is allowed today, so…

The only exception to the waivers moratorium is that a player placed on waivers on December 19, who is claimed, must report to his new team on December 20 even though the freeze is in place.​

Say a team has a player on LTIR who is due to return to play when healthy. If that happens during the freeze period, the team is then allowed to make any player transactions necessary to come into compliance with the salary cap. The freeze thaws completely.​

The roster freeze has certain stipulations to allow the NHL to continue essential functions throughout the period.​

During the freeze window, teams are still allowed to recall players to fill roster holes, as well as make moves to address salary cap and roster limits in the event that a player is activated off the LTIR. If a player was on an NHL team’s active roster under Emergency Conditions prior to the freeze, they can still be returned to their club during the window.​

As mentioned above, players that were placed on waivers before the freeze window can still be claimed until 2 p.m. on Jan. 20. In that event, the player must immediately report to their claiming team, even during the freeze period.​

When McTavish took warmups in Detroit and didn't play after i actually didn't take that as a great sign. he obviously still didn't feel right. With a bit of break coming up after these couple, yeah would not surprise me in the slightest if they didn't play until after.
