Anthony San F said, (sorry I’m quoting him so much, but there’s so much stupid coming out above his fat jowels this morning) that he’d rather play a guy (presumably Cates, Foerster or Poehling based on the description?) that does all the “little things right” to work through growing pains and see what their offensive game can develop to, rather than an offence only guy like Frost.

lol.

Just to hammer home the Zuccarello comparison, Torts' reason for keeping him in the AHL was that he wasn't good enough defensively. This is a player who graded out as GOOD defensively throughout his prime, even as a roadkill-sized wing. It was a mega whiff of an evaluation.

Frost is not a one-way player. He's crafty, detailed, and at worst, probably on the average end of the spectrum defensively (will flash in his reads and stick work). He's also a dynamite PKer, not that Tortorella ever has tried him there. But we're being told he's "offense only" to help the narrative around his pathetic usage.

There's a reason it's a universally held view that defensive technique/structure can be imparted on talented offensive players, but you're not waving a magic wand and giving high end skill/offensive IQ to pumpkins. I'm also chortling at the logic that a defensive-minded coach can't coach up defense. But the same guy -- who openly admits he's clueless about offense! -- can grow the offensive games of 4th liners. It's working beautifully so far.

Perhaps the best example of how the “eNfOrCeRs pRoTeCt TeAmAtEs” people are just flat out wrong

Goons do nothing of value, outside of helping the tank.

If only someone in the media would point to this video and ask the ptb what deterrence value are they actually getting from Nic.

So earlier in the year, I projected scoring totals for the forward group. We're at ~1/4 of the way through the season, so I figured I would check in. I'll check in again around the 1/2 and 3/4 marks of the season as well.

I added individual sh% and on-ice sh% just to give a bit more context. For reference, at this point of the season the approximate median individual sh% for forwards this year is 11.76%, and the approximate median individual for forwards this year is on-ice sh% is 10.08%. Here are a few notes:

  • TK’s assists: I didn’t expect to see such a low assist total from TK. Looking into it, most of his icetime is with Foerster, Couts and Laughton. Laughton and Foerster are shooting around 2% which is low and may be a contributing factor as to why he is deficient in assists. There are a few metrics that say he’s the best forward at making passes that lead directly to a shot.
  • Tippett’s play: After a rough start to the year on the left side, Tippett continues to get better and better. I’ve really enjoyed watching Tippett this season. He’s on a bit of a heater over his last 10 games, but he also was slumping over his first 10.
  • Cates: He’s having a rough sophomore season. He’s not producing offensively, and he’s not had as strong of defensive metrics are last year (they are still good, but not as good as last year. I’m not particularly surprised that he’s not producing because he’s not playing with TK anymore. I hope they keep him at left wing for a while and see how well he can produce there.
  • Frost: His production hasn’t been there consistently this year, but he’s also not playing consistently this year. I would imagine it’s hard for him to remain locked in after repeated scratches. It doesn’t help that the team is shooting below average when he’s on the ice. All in all, however, I want to see more production from him.
  • Brink: He has been fun to watch. Obviously it’s early in the season and his career, but he’s already on a 50 point pace. I’ve said this about him before; he’s an X-factor in my eyes. Is he a nice 50-point middle 6 player, or is there another gear to his game? Can he be a 70-point guy? I’m not going to pretend 20 games is even close to an appropriate amount of time to answer those questions, but he’s had a great opening to this season and I hope it continues.
  • Foerster: He’s playing very well. He’s grading out to be a very good two-way forward, but he’s a bit snake bitten right now when it comes to points. It’s a bit concerning that he’s played mostly with TK and Couts, but it’s just the beginning of the season. Hopefully he gets a few and falls into it.

Listened to Torts today and he spent a lot of time talking about Sanheim. Torts is committed to keeping him on the right side (and also York on the left side), so Sanheim will thankfully be spared many minutes dragging Risto around for the foreseeable future...
I listened as well. I didn't want to post on it, because I guess I'm bashing Torts too much lately, but here is my take...

Torts gave lots of praise to Sanheim, and said the main difference is his mindset. Torts said he had multiple conversations to Sanheim last season about becoming more aggressive (more my word than his). I want to give Torts credit here for pushing Sanheim to play better, but then I remembered this team came extremely close to trading Sanheim this offseason for Torey Krug.

I also remembered that the only ones who were traded were non-Torts guys. No Tort's guys were traded. So then the question is, at the beginning of the season, what was the Flyers stance on Sanheim? They really didn't have a choice in playing him as the defacto No.1 Defenseman. Am I really supposed to give them credit for the team following the only viable path? I know certain posters think I and others are only looking for the bad, but that's not the case. They lucked into this situation. It's hard to give them credit on this one, for me.

Torts did also mention that the trade rumours probably helped fuel Sanheim this year.
