Just eat whatever salary for the best return -- and that's not Gudbranson. Roslovic is pretty bad defensively, but at least he's a UFA and maybe they get a 2nd or 3rd at the deadline. He played under Tortorella, who scratched him for the usual reasons, but that's not a deal breaker with him, so who knows his real thoughts? It would absolutely eat into Frost's minutes though, and that part doesn't thrill me for a UFA-to-be.

Gudbranson, with his 3 years and $4MM AAV, shouldn't even be under consideration. Columbus wants to move a defender out, and they want a center. I'm seeing all the positives on their side there, unless a 1st rounder is attached.

Don't get me wrong: Tortorella and Jones would likely push hard for Gudbranson. Big, right handed, hard to play against in that not hard to play against way......jort melting stuff. But that's a pure cap dump, whether they see it as one or not, and a waste of resources. If it'd be in lieu of eating Hayes' salary, it's still a value whiff. But, hey, at least it would be the canary in the coal mine with this new front office, so people don't need to waste their optimism.
I can absolutely see Gudbranson for Hayes and I wouldn't hate it 1-for-1 with no retention. I'd dislike the usage for at least awhile to see if he is the new Provorov whisperer, but that's $3 mill of sweet cap room for 3 years. And we'll more likely than not be hoping for as low a finish as possible during this time.

I think, like Risto, if you can just get Gudbranson to play passable defense, as the term reduces on his contract (and you retain/take back a contract) he'd have real trade value - for some reason PO teams lust for physical RHDs. When you look at what Savard and Chariot and Risto (others were willing to pay a 1st plus) have gotten in trades and contracts, there's a market out there at the right price.

However, I'm not doing that deal 1 on 1, Hayes has a lot more value than Gudbranson, we take him to help CBJ with the cap, but we want to be paid for the privilege - Hayes had 38 ES points for a bad team, on CBJ, paired with JG, he could easily be a 40-50 point ES scorer (plus PP points). Even with mediocre defense, that's 2C production.

By taking Gudbranson instead of retaining on Hayes, we have more flexibility going forward to use the cap to garner value in trades.

The difficulty in moving Hayes, aside from his recent history of injuries, is that the blowout between Tortorella and him is well known around the league. Neither want to be around each other. It's hard to get value for him under these circumstances. Hayes for Gudbranson, even up with no retention may be the best possible deal that Briere could get for him.

Meh. If teams want a player, they'll discount the blowout, I mean Torts has a history of clashing with veterans.
The important thing was Hayes played a full season, is healed from his injuries.
He's not getting a huge haul with that contract, but he does have some value.

I think most rational folks will factor in what a giant douche Torts is so that may not be as bad as you think.

8 teams, the 3 offense first teams are home, Seattle pushed Dallas to 7 games.
Not a lot of offensive minded smurfs in the final four:
Vegas - Marchessault 5'9 183, D: Pietrangelo 6'3 215, Theodore 6'2 197, Martinez 6'1 210, McNabb 6'4 215
Carolina - Aho 6'0 176, Jarvis 5'10 175, D: Burns 6'5 230, Slavin 6'3 207, Skjei 6'3 210, Pesce 6'3 206
Florida - Verhaeghe 6'0 180, D: Montour 6'0 194, Forsling 6'0 186, Ekblad 6'4 215, Staal 6'4 195
Dallas - Johnston 6'1 185, D: Heiskanen 6'1 195, Suter 6'1 205, Lindell 6'3 220, Hakanpaa 6'6 225

The game has changed, but not nearly as much as some here suggest.
Forwards under 5'11 190 lbs are still rare, "Small" D-men are 6'0 190.
Size still matters, not as much as the past, and big slow players are mostly extinct (except for that cockroach, Luke Schenn).
But there is a legitimate reason why smaller players fall in the draft, the successful ones are outliers.

Wait, you have spent a year claiming everyone adores playing for Tortorella and being treating badly by him is a badge of honor that all players enjoy and are proud of. Were you wrong then, or did you lie?

There's definitely a market for Hayes. The UFA market is weak this year and several teams are looking for center help.
I think a team like Colorado would make sense if we retain salary.

He may not be able to play center anymore is a valid concern though.

For Torts, who wants his centers to be the "3rd D-man."
Other teams put less defensive responsibility on their centers.

Hayes has plenty of value, he's a great passer and playmaker, other coaches see that but they only see it when he WANTS to play .....maybe on the right team he could be a point a game player .

Maybe I’m crazy, but I don’t see how Hayes went from good locker room guy, and productive player (even with his faults) - to someone that absolutely needed to be banished from the Flyers.

Other than he didn’t get on his knees, and bend over for Torts.

It’s just funny the complete turn the organization took from him being a core piece, and made into an outcast.

Torts knows all lol. A week working at a normal place, and his tires are rightfully slashed.
