We always hear how AGM Barry Hanrahan, the Flyers' "cap specialist," is such a salary cap genius, yet it seems like the Flyers have had their fair share of cap mistakes during Hanrahan's tenure, dating back to Holmgren.

The Pronger over-35 contract mistake, and needing to use amateur tryouts / not being able to ice a full lineup a couple of nights because of the cap (like Toronto this year) , both under Holmgren with Hanrahan as the cap guy, spring to mind.

Maybe the GMs are doing what they want against Hanrahan's wishes, and/or maybe he warns them and they ignore it. I don't know. But it makes me wonder.

That's what he does. His mismanagement of contracts and the cap persists for years. Go ask Minnesota fans!

The old buyout rules are the only reason he wasn't fired 4-5 years sooner there. And he didn't get any better at the job.

Barry Hanrahan was named Vice President of the Flyers in August of 2018. He was previously named Assistant General Manager in August of 2006. Hanrahan assists President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Chuck Fletcher in the day-to-day operations of the hockey club, including contract research and negotiations, roster and salary cap management, and scheduling. Hanrahan also serves as the club’s direct liaison between the NHL and the Flyers regarding all aspects of hockey administration and works closely with the Flyers minor league affiliates in Lehigh Valley of the AHL and Reading of the ECHL. He has worked for the club since 1997, first as Director of Team Services and then as Assistant to the General Manager before being promoted to his current role.

We'll never know who is actually responsible for what, but those are not areas I would consider strengths.

I do not understand why he has lifetime tenure. Of course, most people do. Despite results being woeful for years without end.

Yeah that annoyed me. Maybe, just maybe, sort out the rules yourself? Figure it out? Make an argument for this year if you can, instead of more Fletcherian passivity and laziness?
