I like him alot too. He doesn't have quite the high hockey I.Q. and I still question if he can ever stay healthy, but he's a big body with skill who can play a grinding role, or be the Anisimov to Bedard's line. So pretty much you can play him up and down the lineup and not miss much. Oh and he's got tons of grit. Much meaner than his brother Kirby.

It's not a matter of "understanding the game" in the sense that I've seen him basically do what Frolik did alot and shoot low percentage shots at the net and guys were wide open. It's one thing to do it when bodies are in front of the net. Never said he was Athanasiou brain dead though, he can process the game out there because he can read the play and be plays a simple one. He did exactly what he was suppose to do playing with Bedard at the rookie showcase. Give him the puck, bang bodies to give him space, go to the net and screen the goalie. Meat and potatoes hockey.
