2023-24 Frank J. Selke Trophy finalists: Aleksander Barkov, Auston Matthews, Jordan Staal | Winner: Aleksander Barkov

You can't make both of these arguments in good faith:

"Nylander had 98 points on the season, hardly disappearing "

And:

"His .97 points per game is a similar pace to his career average"

Especially considering the drop off from 1.46 ppg to .97.

As for whether I have a high opinion of Nylander. He is a very good offensive player who has the tools to be a top 10 offensive player in the league.

He is comfortably the 2nd most individually skilled and gifted player on his team, with better skating, passing than Matthews, and a much better shot and physical ability than Marner.

And yet, he is 3rd fiddle to those 2 guys year in, and year out despite being older.

Why?

Because he doesn't think the game at the same level as the other 2.
That mental incapacity limits his ability to utilize others effectively, and his poor judgment is at times a hindrance.

Also the phobia of helping out defensively or to take and deliver hits is incredibly infuriating, not to mention how much of a liability it makes him outside of the attacking phase of the game.
You are riding a lot off a 36 game sample size with that PPG.

It seems silly to not have expected his production to drop, after he just came off an embarrassingly long contract negotiation last time around that was a distraction for the entire season, and then when he came back he produced a measly 27 points in 54 games. The guy has a history of burning the team by falling off a cliff in production after signing a contract yet we do this dance again anyway.

Once bitten, twice shy? Don't get fooled again or whatever.

When have we seen a player score 69 or more goals and lead the league in goals by a wide margin while having Selke level defense? It hasn't happened, which is why its one of the greatest seasons of all time.

There, I am glad I could be the first person to tell you that.
It happened this year. The 69 goal scorer was also Selke finalist.

No it didn't. Selke level defense does not equate to Selke finalist.
It equates both to the winner and to the finalists. That is the reason they were voted on. The winner is deemed to the player who demonstrates the most skill in the defensive component of the game. The other two are runners up as voted on by the PHWA.

Not related to this particular award. Is there going to be no award show or will there be an we just got spoilers. What's the point of the award show anyway? I used to like it.

June 27? I'll check

But what's the point now? Maybe I'm childish but I really don't understand why with awards and draft picks reporters find the need to let everyone know. You watch so that the presenter tells you who wins / gets drafted. I hate this new nonsense.

I don't know if there is a point. I don't plan on watching.

No it doesn’t. 165 people voted for Barkov number 1. He was the obvious choice, and those runner up votes are always a joke.

Mackinnon got a vote. Nathan MacKinnon almost won the Art Ross while playing Selke level defense! Quick, someone start the thread.

Barkov was the winner and is the best defensive forward in the game. The runner up votes are not a joke though.

Besides, you can start the Nathan Mackinnon thread. If you think it is threadworthy, you don't have to have someone else do it.

They are a joke. Media members giving votes to gain access has been happening for awhile.

Sarcasm bud. 2 Toronto media members giving Matthews a vote and 1 giving Marner a vote shows they couldn’t even get on the same page.

Most people know some media members give votes to gain access and don’t need a thread reminding them. If you’re job is in the Toronto media and relies on Auston Matthews liking you in order to get sound bytes and things to write about throughout the season, you best believe they are looking for any excuse to vote for him.

Have the votes been made public?

Gain access to what?
To players. Play empowerment is crazy, and if the player doesn’t like you then you won’t get good soundbytes, answers to your questions, or favorable time.

Players feed into it too. They know which media member did or didn’t vote them on major awards. These major awards can influence contracts and compensation in a big way. Considering how close Matthews was from being a finalist to not even being top 5, those 2 number 1 media votes had a big impact and may help Matthews in contract negotiations.

Agents leak a lot of information too, and you want them to pick up the phone when you call. They do that when you write good stories about their client, and when you vote for their client on major awards.

That is a bunch on nonsense that you just made up.

No one should take these awards seriously anymore anyways if Matthews was nominated for this award. Rocket? Yes but Selke? No

Personally, I don't believe Matthews deserves to have been nominated for the Rocket.

He's literally an "even strength merchant".

I’m trying to find out where you’re getting all this info from. Can you help me out? I don’t see it on their website.

With the rare insights you have on the phwa mentality, can you provide insights on the other parts of the job they deal with too, or just the Leaf related voter fraud matters :dunno:
