Speculation: 2023-24-25 Sharks Roster Discussion

I know people are down on him, and I know his mere existence is very triggering for some posters around here, and I'm certainly not trying to excuse his poor performance as a Shark, but we really and truly need to just erase the last couple months from our heads and let Ostapchuk come in with a fresh slate in camp next September.

His existence doesn't bother me but until he shows something, he's not remotely on my radar as a solution to anything.

I'm sure the team will set it up in a way that he will have an opportunity to make the big club next season. We will have Goodrow, Grundstrom, Dellandrea, Ostapchuk, Giles, Bystedt, and Cardwell as 4th line options for next season before any offseason movement. Nobody really stands out in that group at this point. If he heals up, has a solid offseason, and finds another level to his game, he can have a turnaround similar to Zetterlund's after he first came here. He just needs to be quicker in everything he does and he can probably carve something out for himself here.
Where I think this "nagging lower body injury" hurt him down the stretch was in quickness. He's a quick dude in all the Sens highlights I've seen, I don't think that's a problem.

I do think he has every chance to be a fourth liner soon as next year, and like, an actual good fourth liner that you want on your Cup-contender down the line.

But there's gotta be more offense than what I saw with SJ. He's not a skillless plug that's why I want to give him the summer to re-group and get ready, and if he's still not showing much after next year then we have to re-evaluate.

I don’t think it’s an accident that we had guys like Granlund, Wennberg, Toffoli and Celebrini/Smith flourished (not right away for Smith but eventually) while being generally happy, joyful kids throughout the season, while Bedard has no one and looks like he has to watch his cat get murdered every game.
Ah, Bedard is the fantastic counter-example; why didn't I think of that!

Wouldn't mind him playing the first half of the year in the AHL. Though people here will freak out due to him being the main piece for Zetts. If he is playing 4th line minutes getting shelled with Goodrow (who's not going anywhere) and Delly, he's not going to grow. Give him 15-18 minutes a night in the AHL, so he can develop his offensive game. Maybe try him at net front on a PP2. I project him as a good 4C, but if he's going to deliver on being a 3C having an opportunity to put up some points couldn't hurt.

Potularski looks to be gone, but he (or a vet 1C replacement), Bystedt, and Chuck at center with Cherny, Musty, Lund, Halt, Cardwell, Gush and a vet on the wings is a good forward core. Add in Thompson, Cags, Schuldt, and Carlsson and it should be a good AHL team provided goaltending gets sorted.
I certainly would be okay with that. Have him as maybe your first callup if there's an injury in the bottom six. And let him play with actually skilled guys with the 'Cuda. This might end up being a low-offense 4th liner, but that's far from a sure thing at this point. Just seeing him in a couple games off the 4th line with the Sharks he already was looking better (as in not clueless in the offensive zone).

He's still 21 and had 11 points in 15 games with Belleville (the Sens' AHL affiliate), which shows he's not some incompetent. Guys like this often take several years to marinate before they become what we hope for them. But yeah, he's always going to be behind the 8-ball for lots of fans, which really isn't fair. The funny part is that those same fans are clearly forgetting Zetterlund's own struggles after being traded to the Sharks—as a player more than two years older than Ostapchuk.

Serious question, do people really think Bordeleau deserves to be an NHLer right now?
No. Perhaps he should have gotten more of a chance this season. But he got injured, took a bit to recover, and then didn't stand out in the AHL. I don't think it's much of a loss.

Consider something I thought about, when I was researching Cuylle today...in a re-draft, who would you taken over Bordeleau? Are any of those players more than basic depth? Faber and Cuylle come to mind, but who else?

I know. Celebrini and Smith had to practically beg for ice time. So did Colin Graf.

lol, right?!? Warso iced lineups this season that were legit 30% rookies. Celebrini, Smith, Graf, Mukh, Thompson, Kovalenko, Cardwell, Cagnoni, Ostapchuk, and Camlund all got playing time. I think we can put to bed the thought that he won’t play young players.

What’s more likely is that these guys, Graf as a near perfect example, demonstrated what it takes to make the jump from less-than-automatic-prospect → AHL → NHL. That is: an understanding of what parts of your game are lacking, the ability to Improve those parts of your game, show you can be trusted play at both ends of the ice, and that the NHL stage isn’t too big for you.

Graf did more this season than Bordeleau has over three.

OK, let me try!

Options:
1) Gavrikov, at 8x7
2) Ekblad, at 9x5
3) Dobson for Musty, Halttunen, and the Dallas first...or maybe Dobson for Ferraro and the pick. Maybe take on Duclair's contract to lower the price
4) Kreider...for free?
5) Marchment for SJ's 2nd, or for taking Dumba's contract?
6) JT Compher for free?
7) Sam Bennett for 9x5
8) Brock Nelson 9x3
9) Take on Mrazek's contract to get Gustafsson for free?

Fair play, you put your sack on the table. I can respect that.

All options, I appreciate that. Do any on their own make us substantially better? How many would be needed?

Graf played 30 games and Smith had to force his way into getting any offensive opportunities.

Kovalenko got more opportunities from Bednar than Warso for example. You can't be a last place team and one of the hardest for rookies to break into.

Over possession black holes like Kovalenko, Grundstrom, Dellandrea, Ostapchuk. Yes.
Meh Bordeleau was also a possession black hole in the NHL and never really brought anything in his opportunities. I don’t think he’ll be missed but I wouldn’t mind keeping him another year.
