Speculation: 2023-24-25 Sharks Roster Discussion

It's like winning the lottery without winning it and getting a defenseman that can be as good as if not better than Schaefer.
Eh, not exactly. You're getting a 24 year old with 0 NHL games as opposed to an 18 year old (ages as of season start). So you lose a lot of years of control and growth with this group. I still much prefer Schaefer because he is 6 years younger.

Yep absolutely. People here won’t like this but if Canes said we will give you Nikishin (and he will sign here) I’d offer up our first (that isn’t first overall) and Dickinson if that was what Canes asked for.

I don't know if I'd go that far 🤣

Canes could be on the back foot with this situation where the Sharks could ask for a +

Before settling on a straight up 😁

Here's a scenario:

Canes offer Nikishin for the TBD Sharks pick. Do you take it?
No, no hesitation

I wouldn't even trade the #3, this isn't Noah Dobson, this is a 24 year old with 0 NHL games, high scoring KHL guys flame out in the NHL all the time, just take the guy with 7 years of team control, draft Martone/Hagens/whoever and move on

I think my question with Nikishin is why the hell would the Canes not sign him if he’s really good? What’s going on there? What are the red flags?

I mean obviously I’d kill to get him but I’d much rather put together a proposal that doesn’t include our high picks (Dalllas + Edmontons? Dallas 1st, Musty and… something?)

But again, why wouldn’t they sign him?!

From Ryan Barnes, Nikishin’s North American-based representative: “We have been working with Carolina on Alexander’s status. Our Russian partners are simply excited to see Alexander play for the Hurricanes and so are we.”

Yeah just read more about it, sounds like they’re just being annoying but they’re definitely signing him.

They want to. But there is some issue apparently that his agent in Russia tweeted about.

They have an agreement in principle but he has yet to actually sign the contract. It could be something where they want him to play for the wolves during their playoff run.

I wonder if Carolina doesn’t want to burn a year this year but he does. He doesn’t have the same leverage as NCAA prospects.

From what I've read they have all details worked out.

I'm wondering if they asked him to sign an ATO with the Wolves. I think that would make him eligible but fact check me. It wouldn't surprise me if there was a miscommunication and he was insulted when this option was presented. All speculation on my part, he comes to sign a NHL contract but now they want him to sign an ATO first before the contract. Or I could be way off base 🤣🤣

To be honest seeing a lot of Marner signings in PuckGM for the Sharks... I'm afraid it could backfire a bit at that 14-15 mil price. Could become another Huberdeau situation.
I'm okay with Marner taking a 12 mil deal which is a giant discount (but very likely doesn't even come close)

I'm all for trying to get Granlund back, go all in on Bennett (if he doesn't sign in Florida for some reason, I mean they need to upgrade Lundell to 2C at some point for him to get to the level they drafted him for) Try to sign any of Fabbro, Perbix even some of LD's to push Ferraro's minutes.

I think it's important to get 3 veteran forwards, 3 defencemen and 1 solid veteran goalie.
Trade some of the depth players that didn't work for a bag of pucks.
It's not looking like an easy task, but for this team to take the next step they need to refresh the team and maybe sign veteran players that can stay for around 2-3 years to keep Celebrini/Smith/Askarov growing and Dickinson/Chernyshov/'25 1st rounder getting easier welcome to the NHL.

Unlikely free agency, but would be happy with:
Granlund 3 years
Bennett 5-6 years
Gourde or Nelson 3 years
Fabbro 4 years
Perbix 3 years
Orlov 1 year
Allen or Forsberg 2 years

The point is to not sign anyone for too long of a term, Bennett is the only one that I would take for a longer deal since he will probably get a lot of calls if he makes it to Free Agency.

This was only the Free Agency part, if MG has some trades in his sleeve that could really push the Sharks to more bright offseason.

I think Bennett is far more likely to receive an albatross contract than marner.

I strongly doubt Grier will do too much this offseason. Im beginning to brace myself for the usual garbage dump. 3M for tannet jeannot types, or acquiring more desharnaises. Kunin, Lindbom, Sturm, Dyllandrea, Goodrow, grundstrom, Benning, Burroughs, etc etc etc types. Overpaid roster filler.

Wennberg and Toffoli are the only adds hes made that belong in the NHL on the regular. Seeing as how he sees the sharks as still far from PO's, I doubt he will add anyone of even that caliber. While, I would love to have several of the guys on your list, I have zero faith in Grier to actually land anyone who played a regular NHL shift last year.

p.s.: Sorry for my grumpiness and lack of faith...

In case it becomes an albatross contract, it's probably more like Palat money rather than Huberdeau money relative to the cap hit. Bennett would bring physical play + scoring punch to the Sharks, which can help a lot with the grind of the season. Having someone like Bennett around while Celebrini and Smith grow into the league, would help with other teams not getting away with targeting the superstar players. Marner is a very very good player, but I'm trying to figure out if Marner is the player for the Sharks in the long run.

I understand.
I feel like SJ not being the most famous market for free agents hasn't really helped with the process and MG probably wasn't going all in last year. I think this year we could see more of a push for better players, but we'll see if anything actually happens since the cap goes up and better teams will have more money to spend.

BTW, we should be able to see grier's outlook for UFA by what happens with the lottery and what he does leading into the draft.

He has draft capital and has hinted that he is willing to use it in trade. If they win the lottery, and he knows he can land schaefer, that might provide some certainty as he knows he can fill in the obvious need for another top prospect dman this draft with #1 pick. That makes the rest of the picks far more expendable. If he loses the lottery and knows he will pick a forward like misa, then adding at least 1-2 higher end D prospects with the later picks becomes a priority, and I think hes unlikely to trade away.

its a big summer for grier. The team made some big steps this past year being SO close in so many games. They were likely just a player or two (like a bona fide top 4D) from respectability. Many of the players and coaches alluded to that. So, if grier can somehow add quality, the team will be able to win some games. But, if grier wants to tank and continue the rebuild, he can add an army of overpaid short term trash, and take another shot at a top lottery pick.

What he does this summer is going to send some very strong messages. Does he add trash and thus tell the team "not this year boys", or will he finally begin to flip futures (picks/prospects) for presents like Dobson or the like?

and will he finally take a risk to begin locking in players for term? After all, at this moment, the sharks have just four players locked in beyond next year (Including literally ZERO defensemen) and just one player locked in beyond two years, and zero players beyond 3 years out. Grier has given himself full flexibility, but at some point, you gotta put your cards on the table and commit.

I think if you can sign Marner, you sign Marner. Guys like that hardly ever become available and we need all the help we can get.

I’d love Sam Bennett, and Granlund on a 3-4 year contract would be great too, he’s a great leader and can cover almost any spot in the lineup (pretty sure he’d be our best defenseman currently…)

Even just Bennett/Granlund would be very helpful to the forward group.

On defense, man if we could get Ekblad… I do have a suspicion though that Grier is big game hunting there and trying to get a Dobson or Byram…

Mike Grier literally acquired Blackwood, Granlund, Walman and Zetterlund who everyone lost their mind over losing to good value trades

You're letting your grumpiness over the lack of on-ice success taint your view of the actual work Mike has done, he's acquired plenty of positive contributors in his short tenure, it just doesn't mean the team is any good because we are still missing several tent-poles to hang the compliments upon, hence the tanks for draft picks

Marner will be on the wrong side of 30 with many expensive years left by the time we’re relevant again.
