Was watching the wild-knights yesterday, and it dawned on me how rare the Wild roster construction seems to be.
Top scorers:
Boldy is 6'2, but then...
rossi 5'9
kapirzov 5'10
zuccarello 5'8
Goodreau 6' (though just 184 lbs)
Marcus Johansson 6'1
Spurgeon 5'9
What a fascinating roster construction. So small. Eriksson Ek and Foligno add some forward size, but still, so little.
Granted, they are definitely struggling at times with looooong shifts in the D zone vs. the larger vegas team, but its impressive nonetheless.
Wonder if the sharks can succeed even with a fair number of smurfs. Also, looking at Rossi's pathway, makes me wonder if we are missing out or mishandling Guschkin? Rossi, at 20, got a a 2 game taste of NHL. then at 21, got 19 games, but just 1 assist and -7. Then at 22, they gave him an NHL look and he started the season with just 1 goal and -2 in the first 5 games.
However, they stuck with him, gave him significant ice time on top lines, he got better and better, and put up 60 pts this year.
His stature is similar. AHL numbers similar. Age similar. playing style and skill, similar. I think the sharks are screwing up with Guschkin not giving him a real NHL shot. Gushkchin had 5 pts and -6 in his first 18 NHL games, but just about Pt per game in the AHL over three seasons. Does he need to improve defensively? Sure. But you need a real chance in order to improve. Rossi had 2 pts and -10 in his first 26 NHL games. What if the sharks give Gush a real shot with Celly to start next year and kept him for the year in the NHL? Could that possible be worse than Goodrow or dyllandrea? Could Gush be the next yanni Gourde or Rossi, who just needs a chance? not a 10-15 gm limited mins chance, but a real one?
And what happens if Gush ends up a 50-60 pt NHLer? Suddenly, out of nowhere, the sharks have a legit top 9 winger with high skill. he needs to be given at least one full NHL year. He's earned it, and letting him rot in the AHL or losing him to the KHL seems awful asset management.
