Speculation: 2023-24-25 Sharks Roster Discussion

Really sucks that Couture got injured this way. I hope whatever is next for him is something that makes him happy. I would want him to contribute to the Sharks in another capacity if it makes sense. I would legitimately consider retiring his number too.
101 points in 116 playoff games is savage. I dunno about retiring his number but no one should wear 39 for a while

I mean, his 'retirement' is the only possibility for this. It's not like hes gunna announce some great comeback.

And it doesn't really matte if he officially retires and voids his contract or "retires" on IR. If he remains on LTIR, how does that affect the cap? I dont expect we spend to it anyways, but Grier would be wise to take on as many 1 year contracts as possible to spend up to the cap with the intent of either competiting for PO's in the event of a miracle, or getting more free picks at the TDL. After all, functionally trading cap space for free picks is a good deal if Hasso doesnt mind.
Couture will go on IR.

Teams do not accrue any cap space when using LTIR, so there is no benefit whatsoever to using LTIR when a team is well below the cap ceiling (which we will certainly be through the remainder of Couture's contract) - in fact, it would mean the Sharks would be unable to add any contracts throughout the year.

LTIR allows you to exceed the cap ceiling by an amount equal to the LTIR contract less the team's cap space at the time they place the contract on LTIR.

Couture's contract will continue to count against our cap unless he officially retires (and gives up the money), or is traded to another team. LTIR does not remove a contract from the cap hit.

Grier probably asked Logan to not officially retire so they could use his hit to help reach the salary floor.

I'm on the 'we need talent first' bandwagon, but I certainly wouldn't be targeting 5'9 forwards. Konecky is another guy I could see moving with Philly potentially wanting to take their tank to the next level. I like both, but if you acquired either guy for assets, you probably need to flip Eklund for a defenseman.

In a vacuum, I probably don't pursue. In a world where we just drafted Martone and Buff offers Byram for Eklund, and we can get Rossi for our 2nd and Dal 1st. I'm probably game.
Oof!
No to trading Eklund for Byram
Hell no to trading for Rossi

Do you guys think it's possible to get two solid D by UFA this summer? After all, that's the only way to build an even bad D (as opposed to embarassing) without trading Eklund or futures. Seeing as how there is little chance of making the PO's this coming year, it's not the end of the world to try to overpay two UFA D for short term 1-3 years) deals. Clearly, no D under 33 is gunna be interested in a 1-2 year deal. When UFA between ages 28-32, you are looking to sign your last major contract. No chance you take anything under 5 years.

Orlov will be 34 years old, so he's not gunna get any real term. played 20 mins/gm. 1 yr, 7M or 2 years, 6M per?
Dumoulin will also be 34. Played nearly 20 mins/gm. 1 yr, 6M or 2 years 4.5M per?

With those two, we still stink, but at least they will have 4 NHL quality Dmen, even if still not good. And with 1-2 year deals, the flexibility is there to dump all at the TDL.

I can understand the theory of not adding long term commitments this summer sicne they arent ready ot compete for real, but it seems like they have to start building, no?

We're not adding two really solid defensemen this offseason. Maybe we add one and then manage to get a Ceci-esque guy somehow. Odds are we go into next season the way we did this year - manage to get a pair of #4-5 guys (Walman and Ceci) to become our top pair and hope that some combo of Ferraro-Mukhamadullin-Liljegren can manage to tread water as a middle pair.

We are still going to suck next season. Hopefully its a 70-point level of suck.

If opportunity only affords us one top four defenseman, the team likely won’t be improving all that much. I can’t see any top pairing being successful but you might pair that acquisition with Mukhamadullin as a second pairing that gets elevated when we rent out guys like Ferraro and maybe Liljegren. I think it’s doable to get more than just one but whether they’re fits is anyone’s guess.

can you really announce you arent playing another game and not retire?
Pronger announced in march 2013 that he was stepping away from the game due to injury. He officially retired in june 2017.

Couture will officially retire probably june/july 2027.

He’s not technically retiring, because that would forfeit the $16M remaining on his contract. The announcement is that he is unable to resume his playing career due to injury. This is an acknowledgement that Logan won’t ever again be medically cleared to play :(

The team cannot force him to retire. Nor can they waive him, reassign him to the AHL, trade, or buyout his contract—without his permission—since he’s injured.

He’ll be on IR for the next two years and will count on the cap; helping hit the cap floor if that’s what Grier needs. At the same time, should Grier want to use Logan’s $8M in cap space to sign some player, Couture can be moved to LTIR and the Sharks will be able to exceed the cap by up to $8M (including Couture’s salary). Functionally, Couture’s contract will in no way hinder whatever the Sharks want to do*

*Technically if Grier wants to spend to the cap at the very start of either of the next two seasons, like the literal first day of the league calendar start, he’d have to do some paper shenanigans to fit Couture’s contract under the cap prior to placing him on LTIR for the season.

I don’t think this is entirely correct. The team can absolutely trade him without his permission whether he’s injured or not. It just has to be to one of his three chosen teams each season.

That is the kiss of death with his son’s future in the NHL. No team will sign him after watching the tape and seeing him complain like this and throw the coach under the bus like that.
Criticizing other Sharks players is insane. Who did this idiot think his son should be playing ahead of? Celebrini? Toffoli? Eklund?

I'd rather have barabanov than kovalenko really
Both are trash. We should stop trawling the KHL for mid-20s "talent" period. Any Russian player worth a damn comes to North America pretty much immediately after getting drafted if they aren't already playing here.
