Speculation: 2023-24-25 Sharks Roster Discussion

Dahlin already disputed the rumors but literally everything in the organization outside of Macklin should be on the table for him. He is a top 10 dman in the league and a legit 1D and is only 24.

“I have never said I want out of here,” Dahlin said. “I’m not happy (with) where we’re at. I don’t want to lose. We have to get better. I’ve never said I want out of here. I thought that was pretty clear.

“That bugs me, actually. I get [ticked] off by that. I haven’t even mentioned the word 'leave.' That’s just how it is.”
It's true, he never said "I want out of here" or mentioned the word "leave." He just said, "f*** this shit," but that leaves so much room for interpretation!

I, for one, am shocked that noted truth-teller "Biz-Nasty" made something up on air

He's not Dahlin but I wonder if we could pry Mason Marchment out of Dallas on the cheap. They have like 5M in cap space to re-sign Benn, Bourque and whoever they want to keep out of Granlund, Dadonov, Ceci, etc.
I would love him but they seem to love him even more in Dallas.

The question shouldn’t be whether he’s good now, because we know he is. The question should be will hell still be elite in 4-5 years because that’s essentially when we’ll be competing if we end up giving up what some people here think we should be.

He’s 24. For reference Mukhammadullin is 23 and we consider him a big part of our future. Like what even is this conversation

How about now?

Does that other poster still say he only gets secondary assists?
I don't think so, haven't seen it much this year outside of the joke posts about it, and a new nick name coming with his nhl time lol.

San jose is now 6 points back of Chicago, with Chicago having an extra game over us. So after thursday we can be 8 points back with only 15 games left in the season.

Sharks with only 12 regulation wins too, Hawks with 17. Sharks with the 7th most difficult schedule left, Hawks with the 22nd. Bring it home boys

Doesn’t sound like there is much substance to the trade rumors but If we finished second in the lottery, I’d offer Smith and a smaller + in a Dahlin trade and draft Misa to replace him as our 2C.

Conservative offseason plan that at least still makes it appear like we're trying to improve:

Trade:
-OTT 2nd for Mason Marchment (Dallas is in a cap crunch, we can either extend Marchment or recoup the pick at the deadline)
-EDM 1st and Bystedt for Maveric Lamoureux (Likely an overpay but need to give Utah a reason to move him, they get a big C prospect to replace Geekie and a trade chip to improve the NHL roster)

Sign (rounding up AFP's "worst tax state" projections):
-Dante Fabbro 3x4M
-Alex Iafallo 3x4M
-Nick Bjugstad 2x4.5M
-Alex Lyon 2x2M

Eklund-Celebrini-Toffoli
Marchment-Wennberg-Smith
Iafallo-Bjugstad-Graf
Goodrow-Ostapchuk-Dellandrea
Grundstrom

Ferraro-Fabbro
Mukhamadullin-Liljegren
Thrun-Desharnais
Vlasic

Askarov
Lyon

If my math is right this comes out to around 74M against a 70M floor factoring in the dead cap hits and Couture. Defense is still terrible and overall the roster is probably worse on paper than what we started with this season but hopefully Celebrini, Smith, Askarov, Mukhamadullin and Eklund will take steps forward and drive an improvement in the standings. If they don't we end up with one of the top 2026 prospects while still keeping most of our powder dry to take bigger swings next summer.

There is no illusion of trying to improve if you’re still chugging out Desharnais and Thrun together.

That's what Lamoureux is for (and as a potential long term partner for Dickinson, Mukhamadullin or fingers crossed Schaefer). Probably not quite NHL ready to start the season but I imagine he'll displace Desharnais by the Olympic break.

Interesting for sure. The Marchment move makes some sense, since likely we just flip him back and he fits the physical stature that Grier wants while buying time for the kids to come up.... Not sure a 2nd is gunna be enough to get him though. 4.5M is a good cap hit for a big 50+pt player, so I think it might take more, but if a 2nd is all it takes, then it's well worth swing.

Certainly, these are the kinds of deals I would expect in UFA with 1-3 years. I think the 3rd year for Iafallo is longer than Grier will want. Fabbro is more in line, but undersized, so I dont expect it. Bjugstad will be 33 this summer so I agree that 2yrs max for him, but I am not sure they want another depth C, since Grier made it pretty clear that Cell-Smith-Ostapchuk is his 1-2-3 at C. 4.5M for a 4th line C would be strange.

Lamoreaux trade is interesting, but I dont think Utah is looking to move a 6'7, just turned 21 yo, defender who has shown he can play in the NHL already. I would be shocked to see Utah trade him... Why should they? And bystedt is not worth much at this point, as he has shown some flashes, but is projecting to be a bottom 6 in the NHL at best right now. until he makes his NHL debut, proves that he can contribute in a meaningful way, I dont see many teams chasing him or valuing him above a depth prospect. As such I dont think a 1st + moderate prospect gets a guy at Lamorieux's level, size, and age.

Nevertheless, I think you are thikning pretty similarly to Grier. Add size. short term deals. Dont spend big futures for the big proven top 4D swing just yet.

I also think Thrun is largely done. I know grier still has love for him, but I think hes not part of the long term plan. Desharnais will be dealt for a bag of pucks next march. Ferraro, hopefully, gets several bags of pucks. Wennberg too. Liljgren too.

They will build the D around Mukh, Dick, and possibly Schaefer. Pohlkamp and Cagnoni may get an NHL look. Thompson may come back, but I doubt those are the long term building blocks that grier is relying on.

They will likely add large D on short deals (like Desharnais) to fill out the D. Im thinkin:

1. Dumoulin 2 yrs, 4M per., or even 1 yr, 5.5M (his projection is 3yrs 9M, so 1 yr 5.5M is a great deal for him.
2. they could trade a depth pick (2nd or 3rd?) to make a little move to add Nic Hague, and let arbitration lead to a 1-2 year deal at whatever rate it is.

You're probably right about Marchment. Maybe throw in Colorado's or even our own 2026 2nd?

I figure Utah is set on the right side for a while with Durzi, Kesselring and Marino. Maybe they're better off using Lamoureux in a trade for an established NHL center but this feels like good value for him. He's not exactly killing it in the AHL.

What's the expectation for Graf's future?

50 point 2 way winger? 2nd liner? Higher or lower?
In the interest of being realistic, I'd be thrilled if he were a 45 point third line winger with heavy PK utility that is skilled enough for spot duty in the top-6 when needed.
