Speculation: 2023-24-25 Sharks Roster Discussion

Yeah he's big but he's also just not that good. I don't see him anywhere close to being the 2nd best defensive prospect after Dickinson now much less after this next draft where they could snag three better defensive prospects.

Danford projects out to be a 3rd pairing defensive defenseman. That's not nothing but I don't think that's a huge need for the team and more valuable than a late 1st this year as I see a few of the defensive prospects on the right side in that range as higher upside than Danford. But in the specific case of Toronto, if we're securing a 1st from them, it's a 2026 1st round pick.

At 24th this year, you could have Blake Fiddler, Charlie Trethewey, and Carter Amico that I wouldn't put in any worse a category as Danford. But again, in Toronto's specific case, we wouldn't be getting a 2025 1st round pick from them. They already traded that to Chicago. We'd be securing the 2026 1st round pick which I find to be more valuable than having Danford and a 2nd.

There is no chance Fiddler is available at 24, Amico is highly risky as he's been injured all year, and Trethewey is in no way shape or form better than Danford.

You might be right in all these things but it wouldn't matter in this context. I can agree with that statement but there's no sense in the Sharks taking anything less until the deadline approaches. If nobody bites, Danford and a 2nd would be an acceptable return even with my reservations on him.

Danford and a 2nd would be a phenomenal return at this point for me. I'm not getting my hopes up and just expecting a 2nd rounder for him.

You're probably right but however it ends up, it's going to be more than what it looked like when we got Granlund in the Karlsson deal. Practically, anything is gaining huge value from when we got him.

Oh absolutely. Granlund is a good player and he'll absolutely help out a playoff team. I'm just not expecting him to be the belle of the ball at the deadline that it looked like he'd be a couple months ago.

I'm only hoping there's enough leverage with Granlund to get a 1st but I'm not expecting it. The market seems a bit thin so I was hoping, like with Blackwood, they'd get a deal they can't pass up on but it probably isn't there and we'll end up taking the best offer at the deadline.

I didn't think Sturm was really very good or would return much (I was expecting a 5th), but I'm getting worried that he just keeps getting hurt and he'll return nothing.

Not a big deal, but he's a common name people list as being traded away.

Call me crazy but if the best you can get for Granny is a 2nd, I'd like to keep him and sign him to a 2 year extension to keep playing with Smith. By the end of that deal, if Smith can take over at center, Granny could still be a good winger option for him.

Best chance at a 1st is Winnipeg imo. I don't see Granlund fitting with Headshot Berube and think they'll look for more size down the middle that can be a checking line guy than a scoring 2/3C.

Winnipeg is currently rolling Namestnikov/Lowry at 2C and needs major help there. I doubt Nelson or any of the centers with term wants to go north to WPG (or that Lou is willing to move any pieces very early in his final year as GM).

I could see a deal that is Iafallo + 1st for Granlund + 4th. May also be able to add Sturm instead of or in addition to the pick as that gives them more center depth. Iafallo would just be cap maneuvering ($4M) since we don't have retention available and he's been relegated to 4th line minutes since late last season.

Granlund, Ferraro (a bit of wishful thinking here but it's time IMO), and maybe someone random like Bords or Grunstrom/Dellandria.

Would love to see Sturm, Rutta, and one of the goalies go but that seems pretty unlikely at this point.

Rutta I can't see as having a market, and maybe I'm overestimating the quality of playoff team 4C's, but I just don't get the belief in Sturm having much value that people seem to have expressed - I just don't think he's any good (he has a little utility, sure).

If he was healthy, I could see interest in him as a solid 13th forward, someone with playoff experience that you wouldn't get out of a kid. But as you said, it's not like that would be much value anyway.

I do think we're going to see someone we're not thinking about get traded. Again, nothing of huge value, something like Bords for a 6th.

I think Sturm is pretty likely to go. Rutta is difficult for me to see moved but he does have some things going for him. Neither of the goalies will go, imo, but we did move Kahkonen with similar production so maybe we'll do the same with Vanecek. Can't imagine anyone wants Georgiev with his reputation. Ceci should go. I'm not sure about Ferraro though. If Mukhamadullin being sent down is any indication, there's no rush to move Ferraro until the offseason if we get Schaefer and bring Dickinson into the fold.

I doubt this is the case and lean towards him wanting to join a contender to win a cup as he is nearing the end of his career instead of going through more losing seasons and as he called it “embarrassing” games like the Nashville blown lead .

If Granlund does want to stay here I highly doubt he would sign a 2 year deal, as this is most likely his last chance at big payday the ask would probably be similar to Toffoli in the 3-4 year range. The only way I see Granlund signing a short term deal would be with a contender so he gets his shot to win a cup. If this is the case you need to get what you can for Granlund at the deadline instead of losing him for nothing.

That's a good point about him wanting to play for a contender. Not every player is wired that way (see the Vatrano extension in Anaheim) but I probably would want to get away from the embarrassing games if I were him.

If he were interesting in resigning, I hope Grier would use the Vatrano extension as a model and not the Toffoli deal. He's already here, so we shouldn't need the extra year to lure him in. Either he wants to be here or he doesn't. If not, send him out at the TDL for the best you can get.

In my dream scenario, I'd love to ship him out at the TDL and let him chase a cup and get some assets and bring him back in the offseason but I can't remember the last time we saw a team do this with one of their rentals.

If we do trade him away, I would hope they sign/trade for a 2C for next year. Seems crazy to bank on smith being ready for the 2C role next year and Wennberg aint it either. If only Couture's body would cooperate!

I'd like to see Ferraro moved as a turn the page kind of move. Fair or not, he epitomizes these dark years of the Sharks teams for me. I also think he must be dying to play some meaningful hockey. For the sake of player and team, I'd move him on even if Muk is never ready to step into the NHL full time.

I agree Ceci should go but have this bad feeling Grier will resign him. I'm hoping he goes big game hunting for Ekblad instead. I'm sure he'll be sought after but we should have the cap space to beat anyone's offer and I think he would be a great mentor for Dickinson & *crosses fingers* .... oh, I won't even say it.

then again, maybe he gets traded and doesn't help them out at all? Is he better than Bernie Federko?

I would be fine with moving Ferraro if it returns a 1st round pick but I don't know that he's worth that on the trade market currently. As for Ceci, I'd be surprised if he actually wanted to re-sign but I wouldn't care if he did or not. I'd move him for a 3rd rounder and get what's in free agency.
