Historically how many players with production similar to Smith so far as a prospect didn't end up as studs in the NHL?
A .41 PPG and a -17 < which is very overlooked, at almost 20? Probably quite a few busted out, but Smith's entire game is points and he certainly aint lighting it up. Factor in he's playing entirely top-9 and powerplay too.

So you don't think his production in the USNTDP and NCAA should be factored in at all? Over 0.5 ppg excluding his first 8 games playing 14 minutes a night with the vast majority of his production being at 5v5 is pretty good.

He may bust out but the Sharks have plenty of time to find out and no reason to move him even if he is a future bust. The best play for the Sharks is to keep him and see how he does after an off-season to build off his experience this season and build his body more. If Smith is a multi-year project, that works for this team’s rebuild.

Near point per game production is absolutely crushing it for an 18 year old rookie
Well yeah I mean he’s doing great. The point is Lane Hutson has a similar PPG as a dman which is objectively more impressive, but if Macklin wins it win be because he’s superior all-around. He doesn’t need to “crush” it (compared to Michkov and Hutson) as the rest of his game is better.

I didn't mean it as in "crush the competition", I meant it like the way people say "he killed it", that he needed to have a very impressive rookie year in terms of simple counting stats

All to say, I never said he can't win it, just that in order to do so he would need to put up very impressive point totals, which he has, so he can

The bigger point I stand by is that I just don't care, f*** the Calder, I'm interested in team success, individual trophies don't move me

Kucherov's rookie season:
GP52 G9 A9 PTS 18 +3 at 20 years old on a WINNING team......

just saying.....yeah, i would not trade Will Smith, just yet.......

I think Kunin will come back. Sharks need experienced forwards and Kunin is one of the few who's played decently.
Kunin should come back. He's been a lot better this year with a full offseason to get over the ACL tear. He's in that prime age window where you can get him for 3 years through his age 30 season and then be done. He isn't a star, but is a solid enough bottom 6 guy that we don't have a surefire replacement for internally.

If someone blows you away with a 2nd rounder for him, obviously make the move. However, that seems like a pipe dream and a package of a 3rd and 6th or something like that really doesn't move the needle at this point in time. Rather just keep the player.

Surely you don't want the guy with a .38 and .39 PPG in his first 2 NHL seasons if you think we should cut bait at .41.

God I'm so tired of people shitting on Smith all the time. Let the guy at least get a couple seasons under his belt before we write his biography. Even after one of his best games of the season, I'm reading from his own fanbase how much he sucks and should be gotten rid of. This organization has been so depressing for so long. This year, its been a pleasure seeing guys like Eklund, Celebrini and Smith progress. But reading constant bitching about a 19 year old kid not instantly showing perennial All Star potential is just depressing. I gotta stay away from here.

After 2 seasons, everything will finally become clear to many fans

Who's saying he should be gotten rid of?

I highly recommend you use your ignore list for that stuff. Makes this place tolerable.

He's been better but he's still below what you'd want out of a 3rd liner and I don't think we're set up all that well to use him well as a 3rd liner in the near future. I also prefer to have the picks. Yeah a 3rd and a 6th aren't needle movers but they can be useful to improve higher picks to a small degree and we're short a pick in this draft anyway. I wouldn't want to bring him back with the intent of making him a 4th liner when we have Dellandrea, Goodrow, and Grundstrom still under contract for next season. I'd rather shoot for filling out the top nine with more productive players.

Eklund-Celebrini-Toffoli
Zetterlund-xxx-Smith
Kovalenko-Wennberg-Graf
Grundstrom-Goodrow-Dellandrea

And with guys like Chernyshov, Musty, and Halttunen turning pro probably next year, the spot being kept open is probably better for the rebuild at this stage.
