I said it during the GDT but it feels like Vlasic finally came to an understanding on what it means to be old. Like the kind of reads he was making were reads you'd want from an older steady Eddie defender. And there probably was that internal conflict that he had to deal with between his tools aging away, his divorce, and the injury. Hopefully it is a guy coming out his midlife crisis for the better.

Either that or he's so salty that he's decided the best course of action is to look like he's turned the corner before he shuts it down and screws them all over. Because the biggest twist of the knife requires giving everyone hope first.

With Askarov starting today, hopefully we can put to bed the whole "Grier is forcing the team to tank" thing.

Grier: "Perfect. I'll just start Askarov for a few games so that people think I'm not making the team tank. Then once this has blown over I'll put Georgiev in and force them to tank so hard that they'll crash right through the basement floor. Muahahahahaha!"

His cap hit is 9 million. The greatest thing we can offer value-wise is cap relief.
He's got a full NMC through this season and a 10 team trade list after July. I doubt he's going to okay a trade to San Jose regardless. If he did though, I'd be alright trading a 2nd for him.

Fantasy land tank plan: Play Askarov vs the best teams to give us the best chance when we have the lowest odds. Play Georgiev when we play the worst teams to give them the best chance to beat us. Problems solved - Asky gets experience and keeps it exciting and we try to win games we should probably lose, but we also don't have him steal too many games!

/s, but it is great to see him playing so well as a young tendie and he's super fun to watch. Also -- his stickhandling is getting better/quite effective.

I love the way he plays. I hope he starts the rest of the way but I also hope we can hold him back to let him be a true rookie next year while being the starter.

I was at the game today, I was surprised to see the response Askarov got from the crowd when he was announced as the starter (easily bigger cheer than anyone else). Not that he hasn’t earned it; I was just surprised at how quickly the general fandom has embraced him. I’m here for it.
Other than because he’s obviously really good he has a swag to him.

Swag, he’s really funny in his interviews, owns up to mistakes with a smile, and is flashy and wild in net. It’s like having Burns as a defenseman except better interviews. I love the guy.
He's a handsome young man with a great mustache on top of having a delightful personality and being insanely talented. Trifecta of "things people like".

I want to talk about Will Smith really quickly. I truly think he will be a very good 2C once he gets NHL strength. I don't care about risky passes, I don't think his execution will be a problem for long. He's just a teenager in a teenager's body. Once he's able to win battles and not get knocked over all the time, he'll be just fine; this was precisely my sentiment on Hertl in 2016 as well.

Will Smith is performing as well or better than Fantilli and Carlsson by any number you want to look at. Points, on-ice metrics, shot rates, whatever. And he's a year behind them developmentally. No need to stress.

I largely agree about Smith. He has some nice potential. He passes a little too much, and Id like to see him shoot more. Hes also not good defensively and hes a kid against men. This summer is a huge one for him. He needs to add 10-15 lbs of muscle, zetterlund style. The way hughes shoved him off the puck in the O zone so easily, its clear that's the major hole in Smith's game. he's listed 6' 181lbs. get him to 6' 200, and he'll be a force. A step faster (instead of always having to pull up) he'll be able to drive, hell win more board battles, win more puck clears in those 1 on 1 battles.

His potential is clearly very high.

Yeah, he looks like he’d be in Gogol Bordello, how can you not love him.

I also agree re: Smith. I think the biggest thing I’ve noticed is that he’s still making elite plays and is also getting better and better (comparing his first 10 games to the last 10 is night and day. That’s the best possible sign to me. Like you said, he’s playing in the best in league in the world in a teenager’s body, that’s *hard* and he’s still making plays that very few guys on this team can make. I’m very bullish on him.
