4 points in 13 AHL games in his D+3 season as an offenseman prospect screams bustville.
Sure, no one will claim that he's having a great season, but concluding that a guy is a bust after 13 mediocre AHL games as a 20 year old seems a bit insane. He played a full season in the NHL last year and looked pretty solid for a 19 year old defenseman. You have to remember that he's only one year younger than Will Smith, and we give him tons of slack for how hard it is to be a teenager in the NHL.

Weren't you advocating for trading for Jiricek? He hasn't been much better this year.

Jiricek is 6'4 and Nemec is 6'1. If Jiricek's offense doesn't translate to the NHL he can still help a team as a defensive stopper who eats a lot of minutes. If Nemec's offense doesn't translate, and his AHL production this year is a massive red flag, his best case scenario is like a Liljegren type who is easy to acquire because he doesn't move the needle.

I was trying to give you the benefit of the doubt and not just accuse you of googling the player's height, but here we are.

Sure, Nemec might only be average-sized for a defenseman. But he's an excellent skater, whereas Jiricek's skating is a huge red flag. I think Nemec has the higher floor (he will absolutely be a #5D at worst), whereas Jiricek has the higher ceiling (but could fully bust because of his awful skating).

Nemec's AHL demotion, subsequent mediocre play, and NJ's depth at RHD/dearth at center are the only reasons a guy like Nemec might be available.

An undersized #5D has no value so I don't consider the distinction between Nemec and Jiricek's floors meaningful.

Nemec might be a better skater than Jiricek but he's not even close to being a Makar/Q.Hughes level skater which is what defensemen his size need in order to be legit top pairing options on a serious contender. He's clearly not an Adam Fox level offensive talent either and will never have McAvoy or Heiskanen's defensive impacts.

So we're talking about a guy with middle pair puck mover upside. Why give up anything of real value for that player when you can trade a 3rd for Liljegren?

6'1" is undersized now?

Everything under 6'10 for defensemen are undersized didn’t you hear?
It's not a coincidence that the handful of 6'1" or smaller top pairing defensemen also happen to be some of the best skaters in the world: Makar, Hughes, Morrissey, Josi, Karlsson when he didn't suck. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think Nemec is anywhere close to that level.

What is your quantifiable criteria for a good defenseman?

I don't really think there's a defenseman equivalent to Askarov out there. Getting Askarov was an incredibly unique opportunity. Teams are not in the habit of trading good young defensemen.

I'd be interested in seeing if Simon Nemec might shake loose from NJ. They have tons of RD and Nemec hasn't been great in the AHL since being sent down. He may have been passed over by Seamus Casey. Not that I think Nemec is a future #1D anymore, but a mobile #3 RHD has a ton of value. It would probably take Bystedt+ to land him though.

There was a Zetterlund for Casey thread on the main board and a Devs fan or two that said they would trade Nemec before Casey.

This led me to wonder if, in hindsight, they'd wish the Devils traded him or Mercer (that they were adamant against at the time) instead of the package they sent for Timo.

Would Rutta be worth anything? At this point I'll take Future Considerations or a 7th to get him outta here. Would much rather have Thompson up in his stead. I know, Rutta's UFA after this year but the sooner he's out the better...

Not at his cap hit. We'd have to take back someone's garbage.
