Would Rutta be worth anything? At this point I'll take Future Considerations or a 7th to get him outta here. Would much rather have Thompson up in his stead. I know, Rutta's UFA after this year but the sooner he's out the better...
Rutta should be essentially valueless - a healthy scratch-quality player making $2.5 million.

However, a good GM might be able to fool a bad GM into taking a "physical veteran right-handed defenseman with multiple Cup wins" for something marginally useful (like a 6th).

This. Teams like to be 8D deep going into the playoffs. A big physical right d with extensive playoffs experience will always bring a late pick at the deadline.

If only Doug Wilson was still GM somewhere in the league, it was his exact deadline MO

I said before the season started and continue to believe that Granlund, Ceci, Blackwood, Sturm, and Rutta will all be traded before the deadline. There is always a market for centers, goalies, and right shot defenseman. Grier gets to reward vets who played hard for us with a chance at the cup and in doing so gives an opportunity to young players trying to break into the league. Plus it helps our draft position. One down, four to go.

That's exactly it. Grier talked about moving Blackwood as "rewarding" him for his service, giving him a chance to prove himself on a playoff team and leverage that into a better contract this summer. I think he'll absolutely do the same with the rest of the guys you mentioned.

The only reason guys like Barabanov and Zadina didn't get traded last deadline is because no one wanted them. Someone will definitely want Granlund and Ceci and I would be shocked if there wasn't a taker for Sturm and Rutta.

Really curious what the $ and term is going to look like. It will be Grier's first long term piece for our future core and I am curious how he negotiates these types of contracts. As we have seen so far I think we can all agree we have all mostly been satisfied with his trades and drafting, now lets see how he does with handing out contracts to players that will be part of his future vision.

For me personally I would like the contract to be in the 4-5 million range for around 4-6 years. Probably signs around 5.5 which I also think is fair considering the cap rising.

I'm curious also. If I were Grier, I'd be pretty open to committing long term to Zetterlund. There's a good argument for 8 years with him, imo.

I got no idea what Grier wants but if I can lock in Zetterlund at 5-6 mil, that seems like a good rate when the cap and salaries rise again.
I used someone like Sean Monhanan as an apt comparison. Sure, Sean is a center but he's also 6 years older.

Perhaps something along the lines of Debrusk, although I do think Debrusk has done more.

As a Devils fan who defended Grier for the Timo trade, looking like you guys are gonna get 3 quality NHLers from that trade in Muk, Zetterlund and Musty. Will always have a soft spot for Zetterlund too, hopefully he stays there so I don't have to worry about him coming back East and haunting us in some fashion. Maybe in the Cup Final soon

I always thought the Sharks lost in the Mayer trade, but over time it definitely feels like Greer's victory. I really wanted to get Mercer in the opposite direction

just an FYI so that people here stop complaining, Friedman said on 32 thoughts today that Bitchkov maneuvered his way to Philly. He would not be here. No fault of Grier for taking Smith. Friedman said Montreal fans have been complaining similarly for why didnt they take him. Well there it is.
I don't fault Grier for such a decision. It's reasonable. I still would've wanted the opportunity to convince him to play here regardless. I understand why others wouldn't want to but I do think he's elite and I don't have that same belief in Smith even though I think Smith will be a great player.
