Yes, I'm sure it was possible to spend the 2011 equivalent of $16.5M on bottom-six forwards. Whyever didn't Wilson sign Alex Wennberg for the 2011 equivalent of $5M and pick up $3.64M Barclay Goodrow off of waivers?

Not excusing Wilson's shortcomings but it's insane to act like building a good bottom-six on a contender is the same as building one on a bottom-feeder.

Well said!

Now, of course DW occasionally did go for depth: Donskoi, Sorensen, Goodrow, Nichol, Ward, Boedker, Handzus, Burish, Grier, Malhotra, Sheppard, Kennedy, Moore, Langfeld, Moen...it rarely worked out and that's on him.

Yep I would agree with this. It's totally different to build a bottom 6 well when you have most of the players in the top 6 and top 4 D + your starter signed to real NHL contracts.
We'll ultimately see how MG does when Celebrini, Smith, Eklund, Zetts, Dickinson and Askarov sign their first real NHL money contracts.

Yep. If you’re a contender you’re already pretty close to cap so you need basically everyone on your bottom 6 to exceed the value of their AAV. I don’t think any of ours are.

Donskoi, Nichol, Malhotra wasn’t bad. It did feel like DW’s luck with big trades was evened out by bad luck with the guys he brought in not working out at all.

Being good at drafting is how you build out a bottom 6 on the cheap.

Yes. Part of DW's issue was trading so many picks for immediate help. That, plus a see-sawing of the vision
This is what I've been thinking for a while and it's so important that even a part of those players who are not our top prospects make the NHL and contribute.

That was his way of making the Sharks relevant. He was also trying to keep interest in this sports hungry Bay Area that had the Niners, the Warriors, the Giants, the Athletics and the Raiders.
He put this team into the playoffs and filled that arena for years on end.
His job was much more than some are giving him credit for.

He had a team that was capable of making the playoffs in a league where half the teams do it after getting lucky by being the person who just happened to call when another team was giving away an MVP player.

I’d like Smith to become a center as a milestone.

If you can’t recognize and give props to DW, that’s your choice. I see him for the great things he did here. It’s about the totality not the last thing he did.

I won't get excited for that smith line, last time he practiced with one of toffoli or Granlund he had his development day the next game and then went back to playing with sturm and goodrow.

I think Bennett could be a good addition for that 2nd line, as C/W. He can do both and help Smith with his physical play.
