Everybody from 3-5 picked forwards though. It could’ve just been that the one team in the top-5 who wanted an RHD slightly preferred Nemec. Tough to say but maybe I’m understating it because I remember considering them interchangeable.
I just have a hard time believing that you pass on a big RHD for a forward unless you don't think the RHD is as good as the forwards.
My recollection is that the top-5 (Wright, Slafkovsky, Jiricek, Nemec, and Cooley) were all seen as relatively interchangeable pre-draft. I know I personally had it Wright, Nemec, Jiricek, Slafkovsky, Cooley in that order (which I'm not proud of) but could have been convinced of any order being right. Gauthier was a very late riser. McKenzie's final list went Slafkovsky, Wright, Cooley, Nemec, Gauthier, and Jiricek in that order. I feel like the call was that Nemec was safer and Jiricek was the upside pick but had serious skating issues.
Anyway, my point is that I don't think Nemec is seen as the depreciated asset right now that Jiricek was at the time of his trade.
With regards to a potential Nemec trade, I think that if the Devils break camp next fall with all of Pesce/Hamilton/Kovacevic on their roster, that's when Nemec requests a trade. So NJ has some time to either move Hamilton (I'm curious if they'll be able to) or not re-sign Kovacevic. It sounds like they're trying to re-sign Kovacevic, but he might go searching for a big pay day after his breakout season and I don't think NJ can give him that kind of contract.
Whichever of Kovacevic or Nemec (or Casey or even Hamilton if they retain and pay us and he waives) shakes loose from NJ this summer, we should be all over IMO.
