That definitely puts a hard cap on the quality of the team next year, as beautiful as he is Wennberg doesn't belong anywhere near playing top-6 minutes on any team with hopes of being competitive on a nightly basis, he's a damn good bottom-6 center and faceoff specialist but nothing more

Unfortunately, if he won't extend before the deadline we do have to trade Granlund, but the 2C next year is either going to have to be our top-4 pick from this year, Will Smith taking a big leap or a free agency/trade acquisition if we don't want to be just as bad next year as we are right now
The team is still waiting for their young prospects to mature and take important roles on the team. That's the hard cap on the quality of the team next year. I mean, we may end up drafting Misa or Hagens if we get a Top 4 pick, but that doesn't mean the team is going to take a leap next year. If people are hoping for an impact 2C to come in free agency to a team that's still not ready to win, they're gonna be gravely disappointed.

This team's current problem is having too many centers and not enough skilled wings. That's why my Granlund replacement is a wing and not a center.

I'm not looking to take a leap, just a legitimate step forward

Our problem is absolutely not that we have too many centers, if Granlund leaves then Celebrini is the only center on the roster who can approximate quality top-6 play, we have a bunch of 4th line centers but that isn't the same thing as having actual talent at the position

We need skilled wingers, but we also need a 2C, and 2 top pair D and, and, and. . .

There's no single thing we can point to as "this team's current problem" because our problem is essentially a lack of talent at every single position
