Speculation: 2023-24-25-26 Sharks Roster Discussion

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
It still feels like Reilly is coming here but we’ll seeeee

You know hockey fans have lost their collective mind when this idiot is the only one making sense

Byrams DY was over a half-decade ago. Why would that really be relevant? I guess to give context... so let's take a look at former #4 OA picks. Uh oh, whoever Jason Gregor is never bothered to even Google them. More often than not I would say they're at least on par with Byram. Throw in cost control and boom we got a lopsided Byram deal.

No interest in trading for Matthews.

But after moving Eklund for draft capital and our most recent HOFer's salary coming off the books, seems like Grier is going to have to go BIG in both trading and FA just to hit the cap floor.

I wonder if we see a deal around 9 for Harley or Morrissey before Friday. Or maybe Grier makes a Godfather like offer for Werenski (the story I tell myself is he hasn't offered 2 but if he does, Waddell might feel like it's too risky to pass that up to wait to see how Werenski feels as next season goes and he just does the thing here and now)

Then maybe a big money, short term deals for Bob and Trouba?

I have this feeling Reilly is Grier's Klingberg-level backup plan. Let's hope it doesn't come to that again. 😆

In a re-draft, Byram falls several places. He's 100% no longer the first defenseman taken. (I would take Seider, Harley, Lacombe, and Vlasic).

Read the whole post. His point is that fans grossly overvalue the mystery box element of the "4th overall pick" when in reality teams will be lucky if any of these prospects becomes as good as Byram and now the Hawks don't have to wait or assume the downside risk.

Okay great but you're not getting Seider, Harley or LaCombe for the 4th overall pick in this draft. And Vlasic is obviously not better than Byram.

Because Carels is a defensive defenseman who scored at a higher pace than him and he's not even ranked 4th.
That doesn't guarantee Carels will be a better NHL defenseman and even if he reaches Byram's level it won't be until the 2030s in all likelihood.

Byram will be a 60+ point defenseman who logs 25 minutes a night for the Blackhawks next season and is still young enough that he can improve. That's easily worth a 4th overall pick in this draft class.

Weird, I literally fact checked this in my last post. Byram is one of many great 4OA's, just google it. I'd much rather have a chance at a cost controlled Cale Makar and end up with Luke Hughes than throw it away on paying Byram all my money. This draft looks awesome for top 10 D imo.

If the defensemen in this draft looked "awesome" the consensus top two picks would not be smurf wingers, objectively the least valuable player type in the sport.

Well, if you see Byram as a 60-point, #1 defenseman, that is one thing. I see him as a #2-3, good for 30-40 points while being overpaid.
He has been stuck behind Makar and Dahlin his entire career. He will easily put up 60+ points in a PP1/top pair role in Chicago and he would have here too.

Does that make him a Cup worthy #1 defenseman? No he still has a ways to go defensively. But we're talking about a 25 year old with remaining upside.

Assuming the 9+27+prospect offer for Byram actually happened why not turn around and offer that to Vancouver for Filip Hronek?

Maybe that's coming tomorrow. Stay tuned.

(Seriously, that could happen, assuming Hronek will waive to come here. Which I'd expect to happen given Vancouver is rebuilding)

Because we are going to need a PPQB at some point.

I have said it in probably half a dozen threads now, but if Grier would let Cagnoni have a 20-30 game shot at holding down a Ghost-like role on this team (3rd pair, running PP1), I'd be all over this. But I don't trust Grier to do that, seems more likely he would follow up this trade with a trade for Reilly, which might excite you but does not excite me at all.
