I'd leave Laba in college another year. Let him marinate a third, maybe even a 4th year.

agree...unless he's like hanging onto to eligibility by a thread or is unhappy in school for whatever reason, no need to rush him. i'd probably show interest from the org in signing him just as a measure of conveying he's valued, but apply 0 pressure to get it done this year unless he really doesn't want to stay another year.

i think he'd be fine physically if he chose to come out, but personally i think his best option all things equal is going back. imagine he'd be looking at limited mins in a bottom 6 role in hfd, why not go back and play 20+mins a game in the role of the guy? might not be a guy who's likely to be a big pt producer as a pro but can't hurt maximizing development of the skill he has and making the jump feeling as confident in his ability as possible.

BMB is turning pro next season right? You've got Korczak already in the A and you'll want at least one or two veteran centers on the roster. I doubt Henriksson will be back. Riley Nash is signed. Leshitshow is a good AHL center.

There is a gluttony of wingers, so nobody is kicking outside to play a spot.

Let Laba stay in college. He'll get big 1C minutes again. Turn pro the following season, there will likely be an open spot then.

Pajuniemi listed as among players not returning to Malmo

" ... he goes through the player group in its entirety and gives a comment on the status of the players with outgoing contracts and various clauses ... Malmö Redhawks can today announce that the following players are leaving Malmö Redhawks: Nuutti Viitasalo, Alan Quine, Janne Kuokkanen, Kim Rosdahl, Adam Werner, Joakim Ryan, Lauri Pajuniemi, Tomi Sallinen ...

Jaroslav was flirting with a point a game before he got hurt. It's not like he doesn't have skill. He's a big guy who can skate. The Rangers seem intent on building a heavier and more aggressive team and he could be part of that picture. Rempe and Edstrom are already part of it. Laba is not as big or as heavy as Chmelar but he's got good size and is aggressive....even the smaller guys like Berard and Sykora are fairly aggressive players.

It will be interesting to see if they sign Laba when Colorado College's season is done. I'm kind of expecting they might. I also think Roobroeck has also done enough to deserve being signed. I think there's the potential for Mancini too.

If he was at a higher level program I could see the argument to leave him but he's not. I'd like to see him with a full year of AHL development next year to see where he really is

Yeah if he were at a bigger program with the potential to get a bigger role next year then there would certainly be an argument. He was the guy at CC so there really isn't much more you can put on his plate there.

He put up numbers against some of those power house programs with out a whole lot of potential NHL talent around him. If theres a guy who is ready for the next step its him.

He could always transfer to a bigger program.

I think that given the fact that the team signed Chmelar, I am expecting Laba to be signed. If they were going to sign only one, it was Laba.

In saying that, I think this is clear indication that Drury and his team are prioritizing Hartford MUCH more. We can see the development of some of these kids in Hartford this year. It's refreshing

What good would that really do though?

He's already gotten top line, top PK and Top PP time and done well with those minutes. Getting them with a better program doesn't really provide any additional benefit other than playing with better players (now there is some value to this, just not enough to justify sending him back for another year) and juicing up his numbers.

The next step would be to allow him to get minutes at a higher level doing mostly the same things. maybe not top line/top pk/top PP minutes, but he should work into a top 9 role and onto both special teams unit with the opportunity to jump up into a bigger role at the AHL level.

Hartford can be really interesting next year with Him, Chmelar, BMB, Sykora, and potentially Rooboreck and perhaps even Perreault (which I would be against but who knows with our FO.)

+ Othmann who i think is not making the team out of camp.

really hope BMB and/or Laba can help with the packs dire center situation

Would probably get more ice time than with HFD. Also would play against higher competition than he did this year, especially if it is a strong league. Which might be a step down from Hfd, but he depending on the team he could actually playedwith higher end skill players on an NCAA team.

Staying in NCAA isnt necessarily a bad thing. It all depends on the player and situation.

Yes, agreed. There's actually a reason to attend games these days. Hasn't been that way for a number of years.

That's only an option for grad transfers. Players who have not graduated yet, have to sit out a year after transferring. They made exceptions due to COVID in recent years but unless I missed a change in the rules, I doubt Laba has that option.

All the undergraduate players can transfer once and play immediately. That was a change the NCAA adopted in 2021. The NCAA is still fighting in the courts over whether an undergrad can transfer multiple times without sitting out a year. The graduate students have been able to transfer and play immediately and nothing has changed there.

It's all part of the NCAA being decimated by court decisions particularly with respect to the NIL issue, and it's actually the schools that supported the change to allow undergrad transfers without having to sit out a year because it almost turns things into a free agency system where the kids enter the transfer portal and then go where the most NIL money is going to be. It's not so much of an issue with hockey, but the decision to allow undergrad movement affected the hockey programs as well.

Not anymore. During covid NCAA ruled you can transfer once without penalty. Now Courts ruled against the ncaa in the last couple months about second transfers.

Causing a huge mess in college basketball and football. Basixally there are no more rules regarding transfers except what time periods are open to transfer.

Ah, so it changed in 2021. Thanks for the clarification!
