Man idk about this one. Pit would trend that high right now? PHI and NYI i get, but Pit is pretty "far back" at this point to be above those two, no? Nothing is going to stop crosby from trying obviously. Why would they trade guentzel then if that is the rumors? If they want crosby back in the playoffs, I just don't see why they would sell at this deadline.

I would guess it's more based on remaining strength of schedule and less on how the teams are currently playing.

Six point cushion on nearest competitor for a playoff spot going into the break. 20 out of 26 points for the month.

I will admit after December and the ugly win against the Sharks, I thought January was going to bury this team. But not only did they survive it, they propped themselves up nicely for the stretch run.

Thank Lyon and Larks, keep up the pace.

Detroit is getting closer and closer to having a death grip on WC2. I like Detroit's chances against NYR or BOS in a 7 game series.

I'm hoping they can make a trade for a mid-late 20s long-term addition to the team.
There are teams behind the Wings with games in hand that could very well change things. If they make the playoffs I rather see Boston. Wings have not played well against the Rangers so far this year.

If anyone told me we would be up 6 points regardless of games in hand at the break, I'd say it's possible but I wouldn't bet any money on it. This season has been up and down to more extenemes than usual, but the highs have been sky high for coming out a rebuild. You can see the defensive systems, breakouts and special teams getting more and more in sync and they should be coming out of the break with confidence. Kane back, keep the pedal down for the stretch .

I could see the Pens making a run, as they have 4 games in hand. They do have a slightly higher strength of remaining schedule, though. Other than Pittsburgh I'm not sure any of the teams currently above 50 points can really challenge, unless Detroit falls apart.

as far as Pittsburgh goes I really doubt that the Flyers are in the Playoff picture by the time the season ends(especially now with Hart gone) so that probably opens up a spot in the Metro

Definitely want the metro to continue to fall apart. If the Wings can survive the first three after the break, the rest of the month doesn't look too bad.

At the 50 game mark last year we were 22-20-8=52, this year 26-18-6= 58. This Western Canada road trip is crucial but in the next five games we play Vancouver twice, Edmonton, Calgary and Seattle we must get at least 6 points. Last year we beat Vancouver twice 5-2 and 6-1. I cannot see us duplicating that.

I found this very interesting was in a Freep article from Lalonde:

"“I’m going into the room to address the guys and David Perron’s yelling, ‘We’re getting 18 points before the break.’ Kind of in my head, I’m like, has he not watched us lately? There’s no way we’re getting 18 points.

The expectation in the room has changed. To come out of Jan with 20 points after the December the team had is absolutely huge. The fact that they were called out by team leadership and responded is huge. This is a different team than the past. We may still lose the spot because the race is really tight, but I am confident that they will be in that race baring big injuries.

Pittsburgh has a lot of games-in-hand on most teams around them. And with the wheels coming off in Philly, I would bet Pitt finishes 3rd in that division.

That would mean that Detroit needs to finish ahead of Philly, NJ, NYI, and Washington. Doable.

I think Perron is our unofficial C at this point. He's not a great player anymore but he's a good guy to show the team how to approach the game.

I honestly think he finishes his career here.

Yeah I never thought he was getting traded. Yzerman brought him in to be a true vet leader. He has played all over the league, has won a cup, and is a bit of a vocal leader it seems. I think that is a major benefit to a young team. Perron is the right type of guy to insulate young guys with.

I've had some issues with his play this year, but he is still an overall net positive I think for this team. Next year is another question but only because I don't think the cap hit will work with the amount of young guys we have competing for a spot. Maybe he takes a 1 or 2 mil/ 1 year deal to be the 13th guy next year.

Except Detroit’s 1 game bye week, we’re back to normal action.

6 points in the playoffs at week start. We’ll see who gains but point % will keep it in perspective.

Penguins, Devils, Capitals all tailing Red Wings hard with games in hand.

Legitimate races/runs with Hurricanes/Flyers/Islanders/Lighting.

Embrace the race fellas, Quit acting like we're in the middle of a rebuild!

If the people think Kasper is a HOF'er, then damnit he's a HOF'er right now and Red Wing are not trading him for anything! If Hanifin is the guy that people need then by golly Yzerman's gotta go gett'em! Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls of Red Wings nation....
